Metabones MB_SPEF-M43-BT6 overview

  • 1Description

Boost the performance of your full-frame Canon EF-mount lenses when mounted to your Micro Four Thirds camera with this fifth-generation T CINE Speed Booster XL 0.64x from Metabones. This cinema-styled electronic adapter features a positive-lock lens mount that will ensure that your adapted lenses are secure and uses optics to reduce the effects of crop factor by making the lens 0.64x wider and simultaneously increasing the maximum aperture by about 1-1/3 stop. Further improving on previous generations of Smart Adapters, this fifth-generation model now features a rubber gasket to protect the camera's mount from dust and moisture.

This adapter is equipped with numerous capabilities thanks to the use of a high-performance processor. The features include support for autofocus as well as the ability to control the aperture from the camera body. Smooth iris effects are possible as well on select lenses and 5-axis stabilization is available thanks to communication of information with supported lenses. Also, it enables electronic (focus-by-wire) manual focusing, transmits Exif data to the camera, and works with in-lens image stabilization. Additionally, distance and zoom is displayed on certain camcorders and mirrorless cameras and Cinema EOS lenses are supported when running the adapter off an external 5 VDC power supply via the micro-USB port.

Beyond electronic communication, the adapter has many physical advantages as well, such as a black felt flocking on the inside of the adapter that prevents reflections. For larger lenses, there is a removable Arca-type-compatible tripod foot with a 1/4"-20 thread on the base.

Allows users to adapt a full-frame Canon EF-mount lens to a Micro Four Thirds camera.
Optics are used with a 0.64x magnification to reduce crop factor from 2x to 1.28x and simultaneously improve the maximum aperture by one stop.
An advanced optical design with 6 elements in 4 groups that will help improve sharpness and performance of adapted lenses.
Positive-lock lens mount provides extra security when attaching large lenses.
Receives power from camera body or optional 5 VDC power supply via micro-USB port.
Electronic contacts permit transmission of data between the lens and camera enabling autofocus, auto exposure, image stabilization, aperture control from the camera body, saving Exif information, and more.
Smooth iris support with select Canon (2009 and later), Tamron (SP series 2013 and later), and Sigma (2016 and later) lenses.
Enables electronic manual focusing on lenses, such as the Canon EF 85mm f/1.2L II, that use a focus-by-wire system.
Support for distance and zoom display.
Internal felt flocking prevents reflections.
Covers 4K video area on GH4 when using APS-C format lenses.
Cinema EOS lenses are supported when an external 5 VDC power supply is used, including autofocus, auto iris, and servo zoom.

    Metabones MB_SPEF-M43-BT6 reviews

Canon EF Lens to Micro Four Thirds Camera T CINE Speed Booster XL 0.64x (Fifth Generation) is rated 4.0 out of 5 by 4.
Rated 4 out of 5 by from Nearly perfect, I've owned quite a few generations and different models of Speedboosters and Smart Adapters from Metabones. This one is almost perfect. This does not lock like a locking EF mount on a RED where you twist and click the lens on and then tighten the extra ring lock to fully secure it. On the Metabones CINE the lens DOES NOT rotate to lock, only the ring rotates. That means you have to hold the lens in place against the mount and turn the ring to secure the lens otherwise it will just fall out. This makes swapping lenses not nearly as fast or as easy to do. You may get used to it over time, but if you change lenses often it's something to keep in mind. I personally love the locking mount but I know some people will NOT like it at all. If you can, try it before you buy it.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Cage Mounting issues The foot for mounting, is slightly lower probably because of the larger diameter. This poses problems with several cages. There is no cage out there that can secure this adaptor to the cage. It can only be secured via mounts that are attached to the 15mm LWS baseplate. This poses issues when you want to remove the cage from the baseplate. With the non PL Metabones, the foot lines up with Movcams metabones brace or if you remove the foot, you can screw in a Metbones brace from Wooden camera or Small rig. I'm currently having to get a bracket machined. The PL mount itself is excellent. Not nearly the hassle some make it out to be. You'll be used to it by lunch.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Back Focus Issues with Apochromatic Lenses I do like the locking mount of this speed booster, there is no wiggle between the mount and the lens. For me this totally outweighs the slightly more difficult mounting process over the original speed boosters (it's really not that hard). However, I did discover (and i'm assuming this goes for all speed boosters) that they are designed and optimized for floating-element lenses. They will not focus to infinity with MY apochromatic lenses (slr magic apo hyperprimes), and not even close for that matter... my 25mm for example at infinity focus is sharp at distance of about 5 feet. You can adjust the back focus on the speed booster, but not nearly to this extreme. I should add that the lenses back focus perfectly when not used with a speed booster. Anyways, This won't be an issue for the vast majority, but I thought it was worth mentioning.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Wish lenses mounted easier Summary: Works great once set up but mounting lenses can be rough. Essential piece of gear to mount EF lenses on a GH5s but, wow, they are not easy to mount. First time took me about 15 minutes to change lenses because the alignment is so difficult, seriously I'm getting (much) faster but I still wish it was a bit quicker to find that sweet spot. Once they're locked though, they are definitely locked. Also worth noting is that the adapter comes packaged nicely inside a sturdy plastic case. Inside one finds no instructions or suggestions, let alone encouragement for the lens mounting challenges ahead. A few minutes on Youtube and various forums led me to download the Metabones desktop app from their website and upgrade the firmware before using it. This, of course, required using a cable, which was not provided, to connect the adapter to the computer via a micro USB port cleverly hidden below the silver ring. It's all working out now but, even for something this straight forward, it would be nice if, for $700 no less, the packaging at least directed you to the appropriate webpage to save some time and frustration.
