Synology DS918+ overview

  • 1Description

Built with a quad-core processor, an AES-NI hardware encryption engine, Btrfs file system support, and Cinema 4K video transcoding, the DiskStation DS918+ 4-Bay NAS Enclosure from Synology is a powerful and scalable system designed for growing small- and medium-sized businesses and IT enthusiasts. It provides fast encrypted and sequential file transfers and can transcode up to two channels of H.265/H.264 4K video simultaneously, and is well-suited for storing and sharing Ultra HD media content. It is equipped with four drive bays that are capable of natively supporting 3.5" SATA hard drives, as well as 2.5" SATA hard drives and SSDs for data storage, plus two M.2 2280 NVMe SSD slots for caching. Using its four drive bays, this NAS will allow you to store and share a large number of files, including videos, music, photos, and documents with up to 2048 user accounts and 1000 maximum concurrent connections.

The DS918+ runs on Synology DiskStation Manager (DSM) OS, which is a browser-based operating system which helps to simplify managing your Synology NAS. Its CPU is a 1.5 GHz Intel Celeron J3455 Quad-Core with a burst frequency of up to 2.3 GHz, and its 4GB of 1866 MHz DDR3L RAM, which be upgraded to 8GB, allows frequently-used files and applications to be quickly accessed. The NAS is capable of achieving encrypted sequential read speeds of up to 225 MB/s and encrypted sequential write speeds of up to 221 MB/s, while a dedicated hardware transcoding engine can simultaneously transcode two channels of H.264 (AVC), H.265 (HEVC), MPEG-2, and VC-1 video at resolutions up to 4096 x 2160 at up to 30 fps via Video Station and DS video. This allows 4K videos to be converted and played on-the-fly on devices that do not natively support Ultra HD formats.

Also featured are two USB 3.0 Type-A ports and eSATA port which allow it to be connected to your Windows or Mac system, and network connectivity is achieved via the dual Gigabit Ethernet ports that support Link Aggregation and Failover, allowing your stored data to be shared with users throughout the network. Data may also be made remotely available through the free iOS and Android applications. For those who require RAID support, the DS918+ supports RAID 0, 1, 5, 6, and 10, as well Synology Hybrid RAID and Basic RAID, each of which offers performance, data redundancy, or a combination of both. For those who do not require a RAID, JBOD is also available, allowing each drive bay to be individually utilized.

The DS918+ is engineered to be energy efficient. Not only does it offer two 92 x 92mm fans to help keep the system running cool at all times, its noise dampening design of 19.8 dB(A) makes for quiet operations. The server supports numerous scheduled power on / off cycles and hard drive hibernation to further minimize power consumption and operation expenses.

The Synology DiskStation DS918+ 4-Bay NAS Enclosure operates on 100-240 VAC at 50/60 Hz and includes an accessory pack, a 100W AC power adapter, a power cord, and two RJ45 LAN cables. If you need to expand its storage, the DS918+ can be connected to one DX517 expansion unit. Protection is provided by a limited 3-year warranty.

    Synology DS918+ reviews

DiskStation DS918+ 4-Bay NAS Enclosure is rated 4.4 out of 5 by 16.
Rated 5 out of 5 by from Fantastic upgrade from my Synology DS411+ii I needed more space and more power than what my trusty old DS411+ii could deliver. Based on the reliability of the old NAS, I purchased the 918+. It was as simple as taking the drives out of the old nas and putting them in the 918+ in the same order they were before, booting the 918+, updating the DSM and restoring my old configuration. Synology has some great tutorials on line to make this process easy. All I had to do is reinstall the 3rd party apps and I was good to go. At that point, I was able to expand my SHR raid volume easily. Plex media server works perfectly and has no problem transcoding videos to play on my ipad.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from If can afford, buy it instead of the 418play. I had DS218+. So I had a DS218+, but started running out of space. I had two 4gb (3.7gb) NAS drives. But with Raid1 you only get the 4gb. Four bays (4x4gb drives) gives you about 11gb with raid5 (Shr1). So was deciding between 418play and 918+. I don't care for the virtual machine or docker, as I prefer dedicated servers with proper CPUs. 918+ has more ram and about double the passmark for cpu. I also installed PLEX and its running so much better than when I had 218+ and Nvidia shield TV. For long term I think its a good purchase.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from My Fourth and Favorite NAS! Have been buying QNAP and Asustor the past five years, but I think I should have remained a Synology guy! Popped in (2) Samsung 950 Pro 256GB NVMe drives, four 10TB WD Purple Surveillance drives, 16GB of Crucial RAM Takes 2 8GB sticks, despite them saying it can only use 8GB max)...set up link aggregations, and wow! Fast, seamless, and a wonderful interface. My last Synology was in 2010, they have come a long way. Package Center has fewer apps than both QNAP and Asus, but the ones they do have work extremely well. I am using this mostly as a PLEX server, and backup for a few workstations and laptops. Very impressed by the transcoding of 4k movies across my home, on any device. I buy QNAP because they tend to have much faster AMD and Intel processors, but this 4 core Celeron is perfectly suited to the task, without the high current drain. Loving it!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Synology DS918+ Diskstation Review I bought the Synology DS918+ Diskstation to replace my previous 5 year old NAS. I choose theDS918+ based on other reviews and have been very happy with the results. I installed two WD4TB Red Pro 7200 rpm drives in the unit and set it up as a RAID 1 btrfs file system to match the RAID 1 setup that I had in my previous NAS. I also added a256GB M.2 SSD to improve its performance. The two additional bays are reserved for future expansion when I need it. I must say that theDS918+ responses much faster that my older NAS that was made by a hard disk manufacturer which had a limited operating system. I can now stream high definition videos from the NAS to my computer or other devices. TheDS918+ has a lot more features than what my older NAS had, but in the 4 weeks that I've had theDS918+ I've only had time to install a few of the apps. Setup was fairly easy, as I probably spent more time reading through the manual to decide how to set it up. I opted for a more basic RAID 1 configuration to match my older NAS, but there are a lot more options to decide upon. For now, I really like this NAS, and would recommend it to those who need a NAD with four disk bays. I will try to update this post once I get more familiar with theSynology DS918+.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Synology DS918+ Diskstation I purchased the Synology DS918+ about two months ago to replace my 5-year-old NAS that was 90% full. The old NAS was made by a hard disk manufacturer and wasn’t as responsive as I preferred, and its Disk Management System was pretty basic so I was looking to replace it with a better unit. I choose the DS918+ based on its performance and reviews that I had read, and it did not disappoint. Network response is excellent, and I really like how the Control Panel and File Station are setup along with the rich set of other components that are available to use via the Package Center. However, at this point I’ve only installed a few Apps from the Package Center. I setup the DS918+ with two WD 4TB Red Pro 7200 rpm drives in a Raid 1 configuration for disk mirroring like my old NAS. The remaining two bays were left empty for future expansion. I also installed a 256 GB SSD card in one of the two M.22 NVMe SSD slots for creating a SSD cache volume to boost performance, but I’m not really sure that I needed it for my home network. I also ran two Ethernet cables from my network switch to the DS918+ two Ethernet ports in order to take advantage of the Link Aggregation Mode to boost the Network response. I’m very happy with the fast response that the DS918+ provides for my home network. I can now stream high definition video (1920 x 1080) from the DS918+ to my Apple TV without the video stopping. That would never happen with my old NAS. I found some of the documentation to be somewhat lacking as I was setting up DS918+ and was originally planning on giving it a 4-star rating. However, I found their customer support to be excellent and their web site provides a lot of other information, which offsets the shortage of documentation. Therefore, I give the Synology DS918+ a 5-star rating.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Backup all my photos and more Purchased the DS918+ and 4 Seagate Ironwolf Pro drives to replace my older NAS device that was beginning to have disk errors. Fairly easy to setup and move data. Had a few simple question got great and timely help from Synology support. Purchased the 4 TB Ironwolf Pro drives instead of WD primarily because Seagate has a close relationship with Synology in addition to a 5 year warranty which includes a 2 yr data recovery service. The Pro drives were a little more , but include the recovery service. System has been up and running for all most a month with no issues. Very fast response time and a multitude of downloadable Apps including interfaces to both Google and Amazon cloud backup services. Very Happy with the system and B&H service. paul

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great NAS, Okay Plex Server I purchase this NAS because it was one of the most powerful ones on the market and I intended to run Plex media server on it. I was using two 10TB HGST Heads (these are amazing drives by the way). The setup was incredibly easy and I was up and running in about 30 minutes. I proceeded to install Plex MS with no issues at all. The NAS works great in every aspect except except if you have a Demand for multiple streams transcoding. This is not a fault of the NAS since it's primary purpose is network storage not transcoding

Rated 5 out of 5 by from A fantastic device to help declutter your digital life... My initial interest in researching a NAS was to fulfill a promise to my wife in regards to years worth of digital photos that needed preserved/stored/shared. I found that I could accomplish so much more than just declutter, centralize, and preserve all the camera media cards, backup CDs, and DVDs of events. With the Synology DS918+ I was able to also centralize and store my music collection which is as important to me as my wife's collection of digital images. With the apps available for phone, iPad, and computer, I have access to all our music, media, photos, etc.... on devices wherever we are. I was able to boot up my DS918+ with 3 x 4TB WD RED drives and an additional 4 GB of RAM (for a total of 8GB) within a matter of minutes. It took me longer to unpack the drives and memory module than it did to insert them into the unit. Using Synology's hybrid RAID technology SHR, I have around 8TB of storage with one drive for the redundancy/rebuild. DSM and Package Station make most tasks a breeze including installations and updates. User creation and even things such as bonding the 2 Ethernet ports/connections into 1 are quick and painless and easy to understand. My only critique would be with sharing out folders within Photo Station or Synology's version of Office and Drive isn't always as intuitive as I've experienced elsewhere. Still, with the efficiency, simplicity, and convenience this unit has to offer, I don't see how one could find a better home-SMB NAS to help one move from stacks of portable drives and backup media into one central location. Not only do I have a 1 disk failure protection thanks to the SHR, but also the ability to replicate my data onto any of the larger cloud services such as Amazon, Dropbox, etc... Since installing our DS918+, I've also been able to shut down an older Linux box I was maintaining as a PLEX server - PLEX now runs within DSM - and streaming to a single TV while uploads were in process have been uninterrupted. I would disclose however that prior to the installation of the DS918+, I moved the modem/router from a less effective location to a more central area for better coverage. Next up for me: running a VM - hence the added RAM - but I expect excellent results as well. (one small tip - the officially supported RAM total is 8GB but you can find several YouTube videos detailing how you can run 16GB). In closing: On the surface, this NAS unit filled with drives and extra RAM is much more of a cash-outlay than buying a new 1TB USB drive here and there as needed. However, once your file storage nneds grow naturally within a family and/or business, you'll find the adage buy-once-cry-once holds true when you factor in the time you spend juggling all your media and documents. Not to mention the many points of failure you've built in by going that route. Our Synology DS918+ has only around 10 days uptime as of my review, so naturally I can't speak to the longevity or support. But the convenience and peace of mind that it has brought along with it's simplicity earns an easy 5-stars from me.
