Synology DS218+ overview

  • 1Description

Built with a dual-core processor, an AES-NI hardware encryption engine, Btrfs file system support, and Cinema 4K video transcoding, the DiskStation DS218+ 2-Bay NAS Enclosure from Synology is designed for those who need an all-around storage solution that has been optimized to not only safeguard data, but also deliver fast file transfer speeds, real-time 4K video streaming, and the storage of Ultra HD content. It is equipped with two drive bays that are capable of natively supporting 3.5" SATA hard drives, as well as 2.5" SATA hard drives and SSDs. Using its two drive bays, this NAS will allow you to store and share a large number of files, including videos, music, photos, and documents with up to 2048 user accounts and 200 maximum concurrent connections.

The DS218+ runs on Synology DiskStation Manager (DSM) OS, which is a browser-based operating system which helps to simplify managing your Synology NAS. Its CPU is a 2.0 GHz Intel Celeron J3355 Dual-Core with a burst frequency of up to 2.5 GHz, and its 2GB of 1866 MHz DDR3L RAM, which can be upgraded to 6GB, allows frequently-used files and applications to be quickly accessed. The NAS is capable of achieving encrypted read speeds of up to 113 MB/s and encrypted write speeds of up to 112 MB/s, while a dedicated hardware transcoding engine can transcode H.264 (AVC), H.265 (HEVC), MPEG-2, and VC-1 video at resolutions up to 4096 x 2160 at up to 30 fps via Video Station and DS video. This allows 4K videos to be converted and played on-the-fly on devices that do not natively support Ultra HD formats.

Also featured are three USB 3.0 Type-A ports and eSATA port which allow it to be connected to your Windows or Mac system, and network connectivity is achieved via the integrated Gigabit Ethernet port, allowing your stored data to be shared with users throughout the network. Data may also be made remotely available through the free iOS and Android applications. For those who require RAID support, the DS218+ supports RAID 0 and 1, as well Synology Hybrid RAID and Basic RAID, each of which offers performance, data redundancy, or a combination of both. For those who do not require a RAID, JBOD is also available, allowing each drive bay to be individually utilized.

The DS218+ is engineered to be energy efficient. Not only does it offer a 92 x 92mm fan to help keep the system running cool at all times, its noise dampening design of 19.3 dB(A) makes for quiet operations. The server supports numerous scheduled power on / off cycles and hard drive hibernation to further minimize power consumption and operation expenses.

The Synology DiskStation DS218+ 2-Bay NAS Enclosure operates on 100-240 VAC at 50/60 Hz and includes an accessory pack, a 60W AC power adapter, a power cord, and an RJ45 LAN cable. It is protected by a limited 2-year warranty.

    Synology DS218+ reviews

DiskStation DS218+ 2-Bay NAS Enclosure is rated 4.1 out of 5 by 14.
Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great functionality. Been playing with this box for a few days. So far - very happy on how it performs. The app list is great. So far used it as a media center + storage for personal photos and documents. I haven't upgraded the RAM and so far I do not see the need. The only resource shortage I got was on the CPU side when I copied a bunch if media files and it started indexing or matching the video files metadata, but these are rare cases. I installed 2x 4TB WD reds in it and initially thought that I could use the SHR to make a 1 TB redundant volume and rest for non-redundant media storage. Unfortunately it looks like this was not possible. That's the only con I can think of so far.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from This is my first NAS, so far so good! I watched a dozen YouTube videos about network attached storage before buying this DS218+. The main reason I got the DS218+ over the DS216j was because of its Snapshot capability. It offers piece of mind knowing that my files are backed up nearly instantly using Cloud Station Backup on my PC and Running Cloud Station Server on the DS218+. I also like the ability to set up automatic external USB drive backups of the NAS. It can be set to simply plug in the USB drive and it starts backing up what you previously set it up to and then ejects the USB drive (if you want it to). No need to access a computer or even press a button. Easy to set up, quiet and easy on power requirements, only costs me about $2 a month to operate.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Easy setup, apps I'm not that tech savvy and purchased this unit as a plug-n-play approach on a NAS drive. I installed two 3TB Western Digital Blue drives easily, raid 1 (second drive is a redundant drive allowing 1 drive failure without losing data). The setup was quick. There's a little learning curve as I didn't realize that interface was through browser but the apps offered are relatively intuitive. I had DLNA setup fairly quick - viewed photos and listened to music on my smart TV from the NAS drive. I was able to connect to the NAS from my office at work too. It appears I can setup users and give them permissions - though I have not yet tested this out as a potential way of sharing photo proofs and limiting client's ability to peruse other folders. If it does, it'll be a welcome feature I was not expecting. I'm looking forward to using the backup USB functionality as well.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Easy to setup I purchased this to replace my aging DS213+ NAS. Fast and reliable with 2x 10tb WD Gold hard drives. Streaming with MKV HD video files is good but you need Infuse Pro to decode HD surround sound.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Easy to setup, quiet, runs in background, great features Have been backing up to a large external HD for waay to long, and was toying with the idea of a NAS for many years. Happy to find this and WD Red HD's here at B&H with free shipping and aggressive pricing. For a home user with lots of invaluable photos and home videos over the years, it's great to be able to put them all up on this NAS and have an iOS/Android that you can access from anywhere. One small complaint is a 'photo upload' tool in Windows that took a long time (for me it was something like 30 minutes per 3,000 photos) to process, and when the file number went to 5,000 or more it would crash in the middle of it. But once they are there, it's great to be able to show photos or video from whereever you may be with an internet connection, even on a smartphone. I've set it up as a Plex server but after reading about hardware transcoding I'll stick with an NVidia Shield unit we use for that purpose, and just point the Shield to this NAS as the media store. Was using another external drive and walking back and forth is no longer needed. They have many 'DSM Packages' (applications that run off of their Disk Station Manager - more info on their website here along with online demos of the software to check out) including cloud backup and a dropbox-like functionality, which I haven't played with yet. Installation was an absolute breeze. The trays are ingeniously designed so that no tools are needed, and basically just plugged it in and a web browser interface walks you through the setup. Lastly this thing is really quiet. Very pleased with the purchase - expensive all-in with the drive purchase, but don't expect to need upgrading or replacing for many years of peace of mind.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from The 4k transcoding performance is really bad... I got this item few days ago and spend sometimes to setup it. It was really easy to setup. I purchase this item to be the home media server for my photos and videos. When I try to play Hi-Res video, it was so laggy on my mobile device like iPad or iPhone, even play on my smart TV. The performance is not as what it advertise.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from stay away. if you need tech support BtrFS implementation is a joke. Too many limitation on the snapshot, slow, long RAID rebuilding time. synology tech support is not existing, never pick up your phone call, takes forever to reply your email.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Easy installation and setup I used two 3TB WD Red drives and set up the system as Raid 1. Everything functioned out of the box, both the DS218+ and the WD drives worked fine. The only problem I had, and still have, is that Win7 will not let me backup my system to this drive. I can still backup to the old NAS drive I use for Sonos but not this one. I have still to explore some of the software and it lost a star because I'm not sure it's running at a transfer speed that is specified but that maybe the Xfinity Router, the file source etc. I need to understand the security system better. I have used Buffalo LS drives in the past and this was a replacement for one that died after a firmware update from Buffalo who took no responsibility for the failure and just told me you are out of warranty. I have yet to see what the Synology support is like. This is a critical issue after my Buffalo experience. Also when I decided to take my Buffalo drive apart they had used a Seagate Barracuda drive that is not recommended for 24/7 operation in NAS drives. There are two settings to be aware of when setting up the Synology system 1. The unit will time out after a user specified time but wakes up quickly and 2. You can set up a "restart when power comes back on" as the default requires you to manually switch it back on. Overall a great experience.
