Synology DS225+ Overview

Built with a quad-core processor, a hardware encryption engine, and Btrfs file system support, the DiskStation DS225+ 2-Bay NAS Enclosure from Synology is a compact NAS designed to centralize data management, offering a comprehensive suite of tools through Synology DiskStation Manager (DSM) for managing, sharing, and protecting files and photos, backing up devices and data, and serving as the core of a smart surveillance system. The DS225+ is equipped with two drive bays that are capable of natively supporting 3.5" SATA hard drives as well as 2.5" SATA hard drives and SSDs. Using its two drive bays, this NAS will allow you to store and share a large number of files with multiple user accounts.

The DS225+ runs on Synology DiskStation Manager (DSM) OS, which is a browser-based operating system that helps to simplify managing your Synology NAS. Its CPU is a 2.0 GHz Intel Celeron J4125 Quad-Core with a burst frequency of up to 2.7 GHz, and its 2GB of DDR4 RAM, which can be upgraded to 6GB, allows frequently used files and applications to be quickly accessed.

Also featured are two USB-A 3.2 Gen 1 ports for connecting external devices, and network connectivity is achieved via the 2.5 Gigabit Ethernet and Gigabit Ethernet ports that support link aggregation and failover, allowing your stored data to be shared with users throughout the network. Data may also be made remotely available through the free iOS and Android applications. For those who require RAID support, the DS225+ supports RAID 0 and 1, as well Synology Hybrid RAID and Basic RAID, each of which offers performance, data redundancy, or a combination of both. For those who do not require a RAID, JBOD is also available, allowing each drive bay to be individually utilized.

The DS225+ is engineered to be energy efficient. It features a 92 x 92mm fan that keeps the system running cool at all times with quiet operations. The server supports numerous scheduled power on/off cycles and hard drive hibernation to further minimize power consumption and operation expenses.

The Synology DiskStation DS225+ 2-Bay NAS Enclosure operates on 100-240 VAC at 50/60 Hz and includes an accessory pack, an AC power adapter, an AC power cord, and two RJ45 LAN cables. It is protected by a limited 3-year warranty.

Synology DS225+ Reviews

Fabulous NAS for home business; does not work well with iDrive.

By Kevin
Rated 5 out of 5
Date: 2026-04-10

This drive is a great fit for small business use. It is a little tricky to set up. The app available for iDrive is terribly slow. 2 orders of magnitude slower than alternatives. My internet runs consistently at 300MBs, and the iDrive app has software bottlenecks. 1.3 TB backup estimated to take 150 days. After running for 3 days, it is still 150 days remaining.... (I have done online backups of this data-set in the same network using other software in 30 hours.)

Simple and effective - noticeable speed upgrade from DS218+

Bought this to off-load backups from my DS218+ which I mainly use as surveillance station. The upgrade in speed is significant. Synology photos is helpful but the face & subject recognition is so-so: it seems to think I have about 150 different children which it turns out, each are comprised of several different actual children. Still a big improvement over prior systems.

The Synology DiskStation DS225+ 2-Bay NAS Enclosure, B&H # SYDS225P, can run a Plex server natively; keep in mind that it does not support hardware transcoding. Synology made the decision to remove GPU access in DSM for all x25+ NAS models.

Can drives of different sizes be used together?

Can drives of different sizes be used together?
Asked by: Heiko
In any RAID configuration, when using disks of different sizes, it will be as if the capacity of each drive is equal to the lowest capacity drive. If you want to mix drives of different capacities inside this Synology DiskStation DS225+ 2-Bay NAS Enclosure, you can configure it as JBOD (just a bunch of disks). In JBOD configuration, the full capacity will be available from each drive, but that comes without the main benefits of RAID storage.

The Synology DiskStation DS225+ 2-Bay NAS Enclosure (B&H # SYDS225P) is sold without any storage drives. This is strictly a NAS enclosure, and you'll need to buy the storage separately.
