Gitzo GHFG1 overview

  • 1Description

Employing the smoothness and vibration absorption of a fluid head with the balance and range of movement of a traditional gimbal, the Gimbal Fluid Head from Gitzo is ideal for wildlife photography and bird watching, even for extensive observation and with heavy equipment. The head supports up to 17.6 lb of gear and weighs 3 lb itself. It has a tilting range of +/- 180° along with a full 360° panning rang, and both axes have independent locks for precise control.

Using fluid cartridge technology, borrowed from the cine and video industry, movements are rendered smooth and stable and a fluidity control system, the Whip-Pan, affords precise control and maneuverability when tracking at high speeds. The Whip-Pan automatically applies friction, excluding the fluid rotation on the panoramic axis, for realistic motion dynamics without shock or vibration. This system also regulates the fluidity depending on rotating and tilt speeds for consistent control regardless if doing slow or high-speed rotations.

The head's control knobs have a soft-touch, ergonomic design and the panning bar is detachable for a more compact form factor when not in use. There is a built-in Arca-type compatible quick release base for extensive compatibility and an Arca-type plate with rubber grips is included. Additionally, the head is constructed from lightweight magnesium and aluminum alloys and finished with Gitzo's trademark Noir Décor finish

    Gitzo GHFG1 reviews

Gimbal Fluid Head is rated 5.0 out of 5 by 6.
Rated 5 out of 5 by from So far - excellent! Usual Gitzo quality, very fluid panning motion and vertical orientation. Knobs are all easy to use and very good for handling with gloves on. Pan handle is nice and light and removable (I would have liked a clip or place to store it) It's buttery smooth and the action from moving from a slow pan to fast action is really good.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Different design approach that provides impressive results The Gitzo Gimbal fluid head looks very impressive and very large. In reality it is not physically larger than other heavy duty gimbal heads. The head includes a Gitzo tool-less mounting plate that has two 1/4" and one 3/8" mounting screws - perfect for the foot of my 600mm f/4 lens. There is a safety pin that needs to be removed before using a mounting plate. It blocked both my Wimberley plate and the Gitzo plate that comes with the gimbal head - go figure. There is a single locking lever to release to adjust the height of the mounting plate depending upon the size of the lens being used. The pan bar is held in place by a screw on a lever so it is quick to insert or to remove. There is a fair amount of resistance when tilting or panning but with either the use of the pan bar or having a large lens mounted on the head the resistance seems quite normal and provides the perfect amount of resistance. The RRS fluid gimbal looks like it was designed as an afterthought or by a committee. By way of comparison the Gitzo Gimbal head was clearly designed with a clear concept of what was needed and how best to engineer a solution. As with the introduction of the first Wimberley gimbal head, the Gitzo Gimbal is a breakthrough design. I bought it for shooting videos but can see how it can easily replace my other gimbal heads for still photography with my telephoto lenses.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great for big lenses! I use this Gimbal on a Gitzo Series 5 tripod with a Nikon D4s and a Nikkor 5.6 800mmm - so a real heavy load.. moves fast and smooth and is super easy to be stabilized. Comes with a nice long rail with 3 screws so I don't have to worry that my equipment falls off. Nothing better for a big gun!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from The right answer First thing I did was set the gimbal up, mount a Sony A series camera with a 100-400 lens and aim it down for some hummingbird shots. No longer do I have to release the ball head to follow their flight nor do I have to hold it place.
