Gitzo GHFG1 Overview

Employing the smoothness and vibration absorption of a fluid head with the balance and range of movement of a traditional gimbal, the Gimbal Fluid Head from Gitzo is ideal for wildlife photography and bird watching, even for extensive observation and with heavy equipment. The head supports up to 17.6 lb of gear and weighs 3 lb itself. It has a tilting range of +/- 180° along with a full 360° panning rang, and both axes have independent locks for precise control.

Using fluid cartridge technology, borrowed from the cine and video industry, movements are rendered smooth and stable and a fluidity control system, the Whip-Pan, affords precise control and maneuverability when tracking at high speeds. The Whip-Pan automatically applies friction, excluding the fluid rotation on the panoramic axis, for realistic motion dynamics without shock or vibration. This system also regulates the fluidity depending on rotating and tilt speeds for consistent control regardless if doing slow or high-speed rotations.

The head's control knobs have a soft-touch, ergonomic design and the panning bar is detachable for a more compact form factor when not in use. There is a built-in Arca-type compatible quick release base for extensive compatibility and an Arca-type plate with rubber grips is included. Additionally, the head is constructed from lightweight magnesium and aluminum alloys and finished with Gitzo's trademark Noir Décor finish

Gitzo GHFG1 Reviews

Exactly what I wanted...

I chose this gimbal with a single stick (although I can take it off if I need to). The smoothness, with a ever-so-slight resistance offers me a non-jerky motion when I am shooting a flying bird!

Not for everyone

This head is high quality and I regret that it I will be sending it back. If you are a photographer you should consider the following: 1. The fluid damping makes the movement deliberate and slower than anticipated. Said differently, If you expect lightening fast movement in any direction this head is not for you. Movement is deliberate, dampened and less responsive than I anticipated. However, if you are a videographer then this head is probably perfect due to the dampening discussed above. For me as a photographer it was not what I wanted. 2. The location of the hole to insert the wand is in a bad place. Said differently, the hole is a little below the height of the ARCA plate so if the back of your camera is lower than the (ARCA plate and) hole you cannot use the wand. I have a Sony A7R4 and with the battery grip it totally prevents using the wand (however, I am a photographer). Conclusion: I really wanted to like this gimbal. I have a Gitzo tripod with Gitzo leveling head and a Gitzo monopod. The build quality is great. And the weight is perfect. Totally a professional level device. The knobs are large which is an excellent quality. The lever that allows you to raise and lower the camera and the lever to tighten the wand are in locations that make using them a bit on the inconvenient side. Here is an afterthought on the movement of the head. If you expect to take your index finger and spin the gimbal that will not happen. It will not move. Same with up and down motion. Hopefully this reviewed was helpful.

Phenomenal big glass smoothnes

This gimbal is amazing for smoothness and stability with big glass (600 f4 in my case). I’m ready to sell the 2 other gimbals I’ve had for a while that I now know I’ll not likely use again.

Nice combo fluid/gimbal head

I shot with this head the last 2 weeks with wolves and bears. The head is good and solid giving a stable platform for my 600mm lens. When shooting video, it gave smooth stop and go as well as pan. Easy to adjust. My one complaint is the arm is way too short for shooting video. I wish it were built like most fluid heads with an extendable feature. I do like the removable feature because when transporting it in the truck it would be way too bulky. Fix the short arm and this would be a 5 star rating.

Good for still and video photography

I wanted a gimbal head to support a big telephoto lens and would work well for vidos. The Gitzo does this very well and I have been using it for most of my still photography as well. The dampening is with grease and one could use a lighter weight grease to get faster movement but this would not be an advanage with video and seldom of real value for still photography. The only con with this head is that it is large and does not break down for travel. For travel I use a Custom Brackets gimbal head which is the best still gimbal available.

Buyer Beware

I have used a Triopo Gimbal head with an Arca Swiss Plate for 15 years and never once had an issue. I decided to upgrade to this Gitzo head (to match my tripod) and am now panicking every time I attach my gear which has FALLEN OFF the bespoke Gitzo plate three times in the first week. Only quick hands have averted a $20,000 disaster. Expensive gear should not create this sort of anxiety.

Will this work with the Gitzo GT1545T?

Will this work with the Gitzo GT1545T?
Asked by: Marcela
While the base diameter of the Gitzo GHFG1 Gimbal Fluid Head is larger than the upper disc diameter of the Gitzo GIGT1545T Traveler Series 1 Carbon Fiber Tripod, the two items may still be used with one another. The gimbal head uses the standard 3/8"-16 female tripod socket on the bottom of the head, and the Gitzo GIGT1545T tripod has a reversible 3/8"-16 male tripod thread on the top of the center column, the two items may be used with one another.

Is the center of rotation centered on the optical access or offset, i.e. introducimg parallax error in panoramic multiframe stitch efforts?
Asked by: Michael
The center of rotation is along the optical axis. The plate allows the camera/lens to be moved forward or backward to achieve balance. I shoot 500 mm f/4 and 600 mm f/4 lenses with 1DX cameras on this tripod with excellent results.

Will this head work with a Nikon D750, 200-500mm lens on a Gitzo Traveler 1 tripod?
Asked by: Kathie
This is a terrific gimbal and I would highly recommend it to others. However, in response to the specific question asked, I have not used it in combination with any of the items specifically mentioned in the query. I have used it with the Gitzo GT3543XLS tripod and Nikon D850/D810 cameras in conjunction with various lenses and have been very satisfied with the performance of the gimbal with all combinations.

As the Oben AC-1451 4-Section Aluminum Tripod has a 3/8"-16 male tripod thread on the top of the center column, yes, you may connect the Gitzo Gimbal Fluid Head, B&H # GIGHFG1, to the center column of the Oben AC-1451 4-Section Aluminum Tripod for your usage needs.

Can you attach a camera body to the Gitzo gimble head plate? (Nikon D850) to be able to use it with a wide angle lens (without a collar) - I'm trying to move around with as less tripod heads as possible

Yes, it will fit, but it will be a close fit. I have a D850 and have tried it on my Nikon lenses.
