RODE VideoMicro Overview

Great for weddings, interviews, vlogging, and other on-the-go applications, this B&H Kit features the Rode VideoMicro ultracompact camera-mount shotgun microphone and a 3.5mm TRS to TRRS cable to allow connection of the microphone into a smartphone or tablet.

The kit includes a WS9 furry windshield for outdoor use and a Lyre shockmount to reduce vibration noise. Also supplied is a 3.5mm TRS to TRS cable for plugging the mic into a mirrorless camera or DSLR.

RODE VideoMicro Ultracompact Camera-Mount Shotgun Microphone

Switch from using the built-in mic on your camera or portable recorder to the Rode VideoMicro ultracompact camera-mount shotgun microphone for improved sound quality and wind noise reduction without adding heft to your rig. Since it runs on plug-in power and has no controls or switches, the VideoMicro is a simple and reliable microphone ideal for mobile journalists, vloggers, and run-and-gun shooters.

This ultracompact and ultralightweight shotgun microphone features a detachable shockmount that mounts directly to your DSLR, mirrorless, or video camera and reduces noise from vibrations and camera handling. The supplied furry windshield minimizes wind noise, making it well suited for outdoor shoots. The detachable coiled 3.5mm TRS cable ensures easy hookup to your camera, and the dual-mono output means that no channel selection is necessary on your recording device.

Durable and Small
At just 3" long and 1.5 ounces light, the VideoMicro is an unobtrusive companion for your camera. Its ceramic coating mitigates glare and its durable aluminum body aids in RF rejection.
Shotgun Mic with Directional Sound Pickup
Whereas most built-in camera microphones pick up sound from all directions, this microphone utilizes a cardioid polar pattern to focus on sound in front of it while attenuating sound entering from the rear. Its active electronics and directional condenser element deliver more detailed audio than the mics typically found in cameras and portable recorders.
Easy Hookup to Camera
A detachable coiled 3.5mm cable is supplied for fast hookup to your camera. The cable is wired in a dual-mono configuration, ensuring that the mic signal is sent identically to both input channels of your camera or portable recorder.
Runs on Plug-In Power
No batteries are required to operate the VideoMicro. Just connect the microphone to your camera or recorder, enable plug-in power on the device, and forget about swapping or charging batteries.
Detachable Shockmount Inhibits Vibrations
Understanding that the rubber bands used in many shockmounts can snap and stretch, Rode chose to utilize a rugged Rycote Lyre suspension-style shockmount. This simplifies setup of the mic and inhibits the transfer of vibrations from the camera. Plus, the bottom of the shockmount features a camera shoe mount with a 3/8" thread, ensuring easy attachment to your camera or a boompole such as Rode's Micro Boompole (available separately).
Furry Windshield Minimizes Wind Noise
The VideoMicro includes a furry windshield to minimize unwanted wind noise from breezes, fans, heaters, and air conditioners.
Connectivity Options
Expand the microphone's device compatibility with Rode accessories such as the SC4, SC7, and VXLR+ (all available separately). With either the SC4 or SC7, you can connect the VideoMicro directly to a smartphone or tablet equipped with a 3.5mm TRRS jack. The VXLR+ adapter is the ideal solution when you want to record the VideoMicro to a camcorder or mixer that has XLR inputs.

The Rode SC7 is a coiled adapter cable that lets you plug a mic or a wireless receiver equipped with a 3.5mm TRS output connector into the 3.5mm TRRS headphone jack of a smartphone or tablet.

The SC7 is compatible with both iOS and Android devices and can be used with Rode microphones and wireless receivers, as well as mics/wireless receivers from other manufacturers.

The cable is terminated with a black 3.5mm TRS right-angled male connector at one end for the mic and a gray 3.5mm TRRS right-angled male connector at the other for the smartphone. The connectors are gold-plated to protect against corrosion.

The mic will work with an iPhone 12 but you need to use an adapter. I used the basic headphone jack on my iPhone 11 and it works great.

question

can this be used on the Nikon D800 and D810? Thanks.
Asked by: patsy
It worked on my D810, it comes with 2 different cables, I don't know the connections on the D800, but most likely the same as the D810. One of the two cables is for use with your phone, and the other is the standard size for most DSLR/Mirrorless cameras (I believe). The 2nd cable is the one that works on my D500, D850, and it worked on the D810 I sold last week.

How do you mount this to a smartphone or iPad?

How do you mount this to a smartphone or iPad?
Asked by: Allen
Many smartphone and tablet holders have female threads or cold shoe mounts to attach accessories like microphones and lights. The shock mount for the Rode VideoMicro has a 3/8"-16 female thread on the bottom of the cold shoe. The female threads on smartphone and tablet holders are often 1/4"-20 so all you need is a thread adapter to attach it to the smartphone or tablet holder for that type of setup. For example, the Ulanzi U-Pad Pro Tablet Tripod Mount (B&H # ULUPADPRO), the SHAPE Aluminum Tablet Tripod Mount with Cold Shoe (B&H # SHTATM), and Oben ASPTA-20 Smartphone Tripod Adapter (B&H # OBASPTA20) all have a cold shoe mount on top. The Oben ATSPTA-20 also has 1/4"-20 and 3/8"-16 female threads. The Xuma Smartphone Mount (B&H # XUMTA300B) has 1/4"-20 threads. You can use a thread adapter like the Kupo 3/8"-16 Male to 1/4"-20 Male Thread Adapter (B&H # KUKG007512) to attach the mic to any 1/4"-20 female thread. If you have a specific smartphone or tablet holder that you want to use, just let us know and we can help you to find the appropriate adapters. This is not designed for web conferencing use straight out of the box. You will need either of these usb adapters to allow for a separate mic in and headphone out B&H # SAAUMMSA or B&H # SAAUMMSC.

Does it have dual function for making Filmora videos on a laptop as well as with a camera?
Asked by: Jan
I have only used the Ride VideoMicro as a shotgun camera On my Canon EOS M6. I use the Rode NT-USB for Zoom and other applications with my MacBook Pro because laptop software usually require a USB microphone input. Rode NT-USB has excellent sound quality and I highly recommend it.
