JBL 306P MKII Reviews

Very good for my current needs

I've been looking for new monitors for sometime, having read quite a bit on ASR about how DSP technology has improved studio monitor design in the last decade. My previous monitors were mid-level- not cheap, and purchased for the mid-field in a room I no longer have. I have been arm-wrestling with them since then. Great, but too big for my new room. I wanted a solid 6" near-field choice with nice bass extension, and settled on these to try. Size, price, specs, reviews, manufacturer- everything lined up. I figured if I liked them well enough, I'd spring for something in the mid-level price range again, perhaps the 7 series. I may not have to. The 306Ps are very, very good monitors for my needs in post and music. I usually don't prefer speakers with rear-firing ports- rather, front facing ports or sealed enclosures, just a preference- so I didn't expect them to suit me. But they do. Things have changed, I think for the better. I may not have to look for a mid/high-end monitor now, but I do like speaker shopping, so maybe down the road...

Very accurate

Flat response. Not party speakers but you can equalize the input. Best for users that care about accuracy. Best used with TRS cables to reduce RF. There is a hiss at higher volumes and unshielded PC's with glass sides may introduce a lot of noise if using them while playing a video game. Difficult to match correctly with 3rd party subwoofer - probably best paired with the expensive JBL subwoofer - I tried a cheaper one but will probably get the JBL when on sale .

Is there an EU power cord version available? One for use in Germany?
Asked by: Ryan
It supports both US and European voltages so all you would need is a standard US to German plug adapter not a voltage convertor. Also, the end which goes into the speaker is the standard computer power cable format so a cable should be easy to find.

Do I need anything else to connect to my Mac Studio? Cables etc
Asked by: Dan
Aside from the items included in this JBL 305P MkII Studio Monitor Kit, the only other item you will need is a short standard stereo aux cable such as the Pearstone Stereo Mini Male to Stereo Mini Male Cable - Black, 3' (B&H # PEMMSA103B) which will be used to connect the computer's 3.5mm audio output (headphone jack) to the 3.5mm TRS input on the Senal PMC-II Passive Monitor Controller. If you are using a USB audio interface and want to connect the PMC-II and JBL speakers to the interface, you can use the audio output(s) from the interface and connect them to the right/left XLR-1/4" combo jack inputs OR to the 3.5mm input on the PMC-II Monitor Controller using the appropriate cables (not included).

How do these speakers sound without the subwoofer? Asking for video production.
Asked by: Andrew
The JBL 306P MkII Powered 6.5" Two-Way Studio Monitors are very popular monitors that are commonly used for recording and video production without a subwoofer. The 306P MkII includes a 6.5" woofer and 1" tweeter, and has a frequency range of 39 Hz to 24 kHz (at -10 dB). If your audio has a lot of content in the frequency range below 39 Hz, then you may want to use a subwoofer along with the studio monitors.

You could use it as a center channel in a compatible surround mixing set up, but you would not be able to connect it to a home AV receiver for the purpose of watching movies.

Can the amplifier be bypassed to use as passive speakers?
Asked by: Anonymous
This is an active speaker, with the amplifiers built in, so it would not be used as a passive speaker. JBL LSR708i 8" Master Reference Monitor (Single), BH #JBLSR708I would be a very god quality passive reference monitor to consider.
