Do I need to purchase a center column or can I mount my ball head directly to the legs? Thanks.
A center column is not needed but the column would make it easier/faster to raise and lower the camera height. This would be the optional center column: https://bhpho.to/3BJzGRQ. The BH-55 head can be attached to both the tripod or the optional center column.

One of the reviewers, Shawn, stated, "Had to order the center column later as I could not rotate my camera to vertical in my BH 55 because it would hit the sides of the tripod." He doesn't say what camera he's using. Has anyone using a Nikon D810 in conjunction with the Robus RC-5570 had this problem?
The easiest solution would be to get a dedicated L-Bracket for your D810 and you shouldn't have any issues.

This site says the weight of the 5570 Vantage Series 3 is 5.6 pounds. But what is the weight of the taller 8860 and the 8880 ?
The 8860 is shorter than the 5570 but it weighs 6.3 pounds. The 8880 is the tallest and weighs 6.5 pounds.
