FUJIFILM X-A5 Overview

  • 1Description

Combining a retro look with modern functionality, the silver X-A5 Mirrorless Digital Camera from FUJIFILM is a mirrorless camera that sports a 24.2MP APS-C CMOS sensor and an updated processor that is 1.5 times faster than previous models. It is designed to be portable and easy to carry around, weighing only 1.1 lb with its included 15-45mm f/3.5-5.6 kit lens. However, the camera still comes fully featured for a professional shooter, offering UHD 4K recording and Full HD video at 60 fps as well as an Intelligent Hybrid AF system with phase-detect points for lightning-fast focusing.

The X-A5 offers several functions and filters that aim to simplify your life while shooting. 4K Burst Function allows you to quickly produce stills at 15 fps, so you can select the best frame, while a Portrait Enhancer Mode helps ensure that skin tones are rendered in a pleasing way. A Multi Focus Mode is available for focus stacking, automatically merging 4K images and adjusting the required depth of field for the best result. Finally, seventeen advanced filters and eleven film simulation filters are offered to fit a variety of situations, including fog removal and HDR photography.

Operation is made easy thanks to the camera's tilting 3" LCD touchscreen, which comes with a notable 1040k-dot resolution and revamped GUI for more intuitive use. Once the screen is turned 180 degrees for taking selfies, the camera's rear command dial automatically switches functions to allow for easy control of the zoom and shutter release. The rotation also automatically activates an eye detection AF function, which helps ensure that the subject's face is sharply in focus. Other features of the X-A5 include a maximum ISO sensitivity of 12,800, up to 450 pictures per charge, and Bluetooth connectivity for transferring files to a smartphone, tablet, or directly to your INSTAX SP-3 printer.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Decent light weight, compact camera for travel/vloging. For someone that comes from a cell phone, the XA5 will be a good first camera. For someone who is more use to the performance of a DSLR, higher end mirrorless, the XA5 will be a disappointment. Image quality is good in good light but not stellar and does not blow me away. It falls apart in low light, however, like when I use it to photograph food in dim lit restaurants. Skin tones are great also in good light. Colors are decent with provia/velvia. Film simulations are fun to play around with. RAW is supported with the latest update with lightroom. I think lightroom is able to handle fuji RAF files now much better than lightroom 5 so that shouldn't really be an issue anymore. Dynamic range fall short of my A7ii, very disappointingly so but I have to remind myself this is the entry level. So do not buy this camera and expect higher than entry level performance as I did, to use for every day casual shooting and travel. Coming from my A7ii, the autofocus is a little disappointing. It focuses slightly slower than my A7ii for stills. The focus in movie mode is disappointing as well, but for vloging, it's not that big of a deal. It seems to grab on to the face and holds it fairly well even through transitions of lighting. The movie quality (1080p) is decent in good light. The camera do have difficulty detecting my face in high contrast situation. All in all, I think this would be a pretty good entry level vloging camera. It does have 4k video, but it is limited to 15p, unusable for anything aside from landscape which you can then speed up 2x to get to 30p. It also has a 4k burst mode for photos which can be very handy. Lastly, timelaps is 4k 30p. ***Here is the one deal breaker for me and is why I am sending the camera back. After every charge of the camera (can only charge the battery in camera with a micro-USB as there is no external battery charger), the edge of my LCD screen would flicker uncontrollably (seizure inducing). After about 30 minute of not using it, the flicker would go away. I believe this is due to overheating and may be affecting only my copy and not others. However, I buy this camera to use on vacations. If by charging the camera, say with an external power pack while eating or resting, with the expectation to go and shoot again after lunch or dinner is over, the LCD screen flickering after charging is unacceptable for my use. I do not think anyone should keep their XA5 if they experience this issue after charging. So to sum it up. If you are looking for a light, small, compact camera for vloging or travel and are moving up from a smart phone, this is a decent choice. However, if you are used to higher end camera performance and expect higher end DSLR/Mirroless performance, this will disappoint you.

Rated 2 out of 5 by from Flimsy Construction My experience with this camera's older model, the X-A3, was pretty bad, and this one looks like it is made of the same stuff. Because the lens was relatively large for the camera's compact size, it immediately cracked off following a light spill. Turns out it was mounted with cheap plastic rings rather than metal. The bottom was also eventually banged and instantly smashed the body both front and back, rendering the camera useless. A degree of ruggedness would be preferable for the active, and yes, clumsy user. Don't get me wrong, I am not complaining about the quality of the pics, just the quality of construction. The color, the bells and whistles, the wifi options, and no viewfinder make this model attractive to a younger generation (think teen) who are probably not of the mind to handle it as the fragile flower it is.

Rated 2 out of 5 by from Awful video, ok stills but lacks the Fujis ergonomics. I really wanted to like this camera, but its faults were a deal breaker for me. I was looking into it for vlogging and as a smaller alternative to my X-T2 for street photography. On the video side, the results are terrible. There are a lot of compression artifacts at 1080p that makes it impossible to use. Also, the lens is quite dark, and the sensor not very good at high ISO, that it severly limits its usability. There are other faults: like somewhat hunting continuous AF, sudden changes in WB (more suitable to photo than video), that are easy to work around using manual modes. If only it had better video quality, I'd keep it. Now I returned it. On the still side, it takes decent photos in good light. It hunts focus in low light. Paired with a better lens, it could work as a compact camera. What I miss is the customizability of other Fuji cameras: for example, you can't save custom settings: which means I'd have to reconfigure it every time I want to switch from my street photography settings to my video settings, to my friends & family settings. That's a deal-breaker for me for stills. On the good side: the lens, while not spectacular and with some chromatic aberration, is super-light and quite wide. Good image stabilization. I plan to replace it with an X-E3 and buy this XC 15-45 lens. If the X-E3 works as well as my X-T2 with the XC 15-45 lens, than I'll have found my new camera for vlogging. I won't see myself, but I can't have all in life.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from COMPACT TRAVEL CAMERA I purchased this camera to take on vacation. ?I own Canon cameras, DX1 and a Mark III. ?I was excited to take the X-A5 on a tour of the U.S.S. Alabama. ?It was so much easier to navigate through the ship and the submarine. ?I like the feel of the camera and the size. ?It would have been a pain to carry the larger cameras. ?I enjoyed ?the tour much more and was satisfied with the quality of the images.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Flexible camera for everyday use The Fujifilm X-A5 is a great camera to have in your pocket for everyday use. So small, it's inconspicuous and would be great for street photography. Since it's basically the same internals as the XT-2, the picture quality is awesome. The flip-up screen makes it perfect for vlogging.
