Elinchrom ELB 500 TTL overview

  • 1Description

The ELB 500 TTL Dual To Go Kit was put together by the esteemed lighting manufacturer Elinchrom for photographers who require a small form factor, light weight, and superlative performance backed by the convenience of TTL exposure control. The kit includes a 500Ws ELB500 TTL pack with a lithium-ion battery, charger, and sync cord. Two ELB 500 flash heads with 8' cables, a 7" Q-Reflector, a wide reflector, Snappy Carrying Bag with shoulder strap, and a sturdy, nylon ProTec Location Bag with protective rain cover are also included.

  • ELB 500 TTL

Elinchrom steps into the TTL arena with the introduction of the ELB 500 TTL battery-powered pack. Measuring 6.4 x 7.12 x 3.6" and weighing just 5.5 lb with its separately sold battery, the ELB 500 is ideal for the traveling or location photographer shooting fashion, portraits, or editorial work. Using an optional Elinchrom Skyport Pro or the Phottix Odin II transmitter, the ELB 500 TTL greatly reduces setup delays, shortening the time between inspiration and execution by using your camera's flash exposure system. With asymmetrical power distribution over 7 stops to 2 ELB flash heads, photographers can make TTL power adjustments at distances from 328 to 656' depending on the transmitter they use. There's also a Manual Lock mode that allows you to get a TTL initial exposure "lock", and subsequently switch to manual mode to fine-tune exposure.

While the ELB 500 TTL outputs about 10 times the power as a speedlite, it has features that you'd only find on an advanced on-camera flash. The pack is High Speed Sync compatible, for example, allowing you to trigger it at shutter speeds as short as 1/8000 sec to control background brightness, freeze action, or to use wide lens apertures.

These advanced exposure features are backed by solid performance specs. Recycling is a very fast 0.05 to 2 seconds and flash duration is 1/3400 sec in Normal mode. There's also an Action mode with flash durations as short as a lightning-fast 1/20,000 sec - ideal for freezing water spray, splashes, and other effects.

The ELB 500 is powered by a separately sold removable lithium-ion battery that will give you 400 full-power flashes and an impressive 28,000 minimum-power flashes on a full charge. Convenience features include Active Charging, which allows you to charge the battery while shooting with AC power for an uninterrupted workflow. Power, performance, and TTL exposure control make the ELB 500 TTL hard to beat.

The Speed and Simplicity of TTL
The ELB 500 TTL is ideal for photographers in time sensitive shooting situations where the speed of TTL lets them capture fast-breaking images or for those who simply prefer the convenience of TTL. The pack's Manual Lock functionality allows photographers to get an initial "lock" on their exposure in TTL and then switch to manual mode to further adjust their exposure as they need or to explore different creative effects.
Wireless Convenience and Control of Skyport and Phottix Odin II
The ELB 500 TTL features a built-in Skyport receiver, Elinchrom's reliable and easy to use wireless system. Existing Skyport Plus HS for Canon and Nikon owners will be able to upgrade their transmitters to work with the ELB 500 TTL via a firmware upgrade with more brands to follow. Via their ongoing technology alliance, the ELB 500 is also compatible with the Phottix Odin II protocol. This lets a photographer trigger and control virtually any light or combination of lights in their collection with either Elinchrom or Phottix transmitters right from their camera.
    Power and Performance
The ELB 500 TTL is powerful enough to overpower the sun, delivers 400 full-power flashes on a single charge and has a fast recycling time of 2 seconds at maximum power. The ELB 500 head is smaller than a speedlite yet delivers 10 times more power. It is lightweight enough to be mounted on a camera bracket or boom arm while on location.
High Speed Sync, Asymmetry and Active Charging
  • High Speed Sync lets photographers freeze motion with impressive sharpness, create a shallow depth of field, or control or darken bright backgrounds using shutter speeds as short as 1/8000 sec
  • Full asymmetry across two flash head connections provides a broad range of creative control
  • Active Charging provides the freedom to charge the battery while actively shooting in studio, making possible uninterrupted workflow
  • Photographer-Friendly Interface
The large OLED display and intuitive controls of the ELB 500 TTL makes using the pack a pleasure.
  • Li-Ion Battery for ELB 500 TTL

The removable Li-Ion Battery for ELB 500 TTL from Elinchrom is a power source that provides 400 full-power flashes or 28,000 minimum-power flashes on a full charge. The pack's Active Charging ability allows the battery to be charged when shooting while powered by AC current. The battery has no memory effect, making it immune to partial charging and discharging. A built-in Automatic Fault Detection System will disconnect the battery if temperature, voltage, or current levels exceed safe ranges.

  • Battery Charger for ELB 500 TTL

The Battery Charger for ELB 500 TTL from Elinchrom accepts 100-240 VAC current to charge the ELB 500's lithium-ion battery. The charger supports an Active Charging feature that allows you to plug in and charge the battery while shooting with AC power in the studio. An 80% charge takes 50 minutes, while a 100% charge is accomplished in 100 minutes.

  • ELB 500 TTL Flash Head

Made exclusively for the ELB 500 TTL battery-powered pack, the ELB 500 TTL Flash Head from Elinchrom has a compact form factor of 3.5 x 3.1 x 6.3" and weighs just 1.5 lb making it ideal for hand-holding or mounting overhead on supports such as a boom. Its Quadra front accessory mount (Q-Mount) is compatible with Portalite softboxes, and can also use full-sized Elinchrom or Profoto softboxes with an optional adapter. The flash head is capable of achieving flash durations as short as 1/3400 sec. in Normal Mode and 1/20,000 sec in Action Mode for special effects. It has a 14W LED modeling light that draws minimal power from the pack's battery, a 5/8" receiver for stand mounting, and comes with an 8' cable for connection to the ELB 500 TTL.

  • Snappy Carry Bag with Shoulder Strap for ELB 500 TTL

Made from rugged ballistic nylon, the Snappy Carry Bag with Shoulder Strap for ELB 500 TTL from Elinchrom is designed for storage and transport of the battery-powered pack. The included shoulder strap is an easy way for the photographer to carry the pack but it can also be used to hang it from a light stand thanks to the bag's reinforced D-rings. The bag has a water-resistant bottom to protect the ELB 500 TTL from the elements.

Elinchrom ELB 500 TTL reviews

ELB 500 TTL Dual To Go Kit is rated 4.8 out of 5 by 9.
Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great lights, wish older accessories fit them though These lights are the perfect solution if you need to shoot anything outdoors or on location where power is not easy or available. They're plenty powerful, easy to use and setup, and they work great. I did an outdoor group photo of 140 people in the middle of Chinatown DC in mixed light with my first use and they shots came out great. I wish the ring mount was the same size to use my existing modifiers with them, but I understand the lights themselves are too tiny for that. Also, don't plan on being able to put the lights far away from each other. The included pair of 8' cables keep the lights very close once you raise them on light stands and have to have each connected to the battery on the ground...

Rated 5 out of 5 by from The Light Kit I've Dreamed Of!!! The ELB 500 TTL is everything it was advertised to be. Simply put, it's like having an uber-powerful speedlight that can accept a host of modifiers. I used the TTL function last week for the first time and it makes lighting almost too easy! I worked with high shutter speeds and a variety of apertures and the system nailed it every time. I was able to overpower the sun at noon and achieve subtle fill-flash. Backlit images were lit beautifully via TTL. This morning I used the ELB 500 in my studio in lieu of my usual Elinchroms just because I wanted the ease of the ELB 500. If you use the EL-Skyport you will have to update the firmware to work with the ELB 500. That is a simple process done on the computer and takes just 2 minutes. I recommend the ELB 500 highly and without reservation. This system will change your life!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Enjoying the portability and quality of this system I recently purchased an Elinchrom ELB 500 lighting setup and decided to learn how to use it on vacation. So in the bag I packed the lights, 7" reflector with grids, 22" Portalite, an Impact QuickStik+ and my Canon 5DMk3 with 3 lenses (85, 24-70 and 135). Separately I packed my portable light stand in my suitcase. I also had the Elinchrom Skyport with HSS. Everything worked great and I learned how everything worked and was very happy with the lights and integration of the whole setup. The only disappointment was the Skyport as that seems to only allow the A and B ports to be treated as 1 group whereas if you use the Odin II setup you can treat them as separate groups allowing you to control them independently. Not a huge deal, but it would be a convenience if the Skyport system allowed you to do that as well. Overall, this was a reasonably compact setup that allowed me to travel easily (though I may consider using a rolling bag instead next time). The bag fit comfortably in the overhead compartment on my flights and I was even able to fit my laptop (15" MacBook Pro) and iPad Mini in the side pocket. Looking forward to more learning and may switch to the Odin II system as that would allow me to use my canon flashes and integrate other lighting into the system.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Perfect addition to my current gear I've been using five Phottix Mitros + with my Nikon DSLRs to light my weddings. In mid-day sun, I would group three of them together in a Wescott Softbox to get enough light to overpower the sun, but I wanted something lighter and easier to manage. I rented the Profoto B1s and found them really heavy and worried about a guest knocking one over during the reception (plus, the price was a bit out of budget and left my Phottix system obsolete). After lots of research, I bought the dual To-Go system with the Phottix Odin II, and it is absolutely perfect. I also got the Quadra adapter and then the Wescott Rapid softbox with the Elinchrom head. So far I've only used one head as my key light and then the flashes for fill/back/hair lights. I think I might keep it this way most of the time, so I always have a backup ready in case something happens to the cable or bulb.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Thank You Elinchrom I have been waiting for the Sony TTL & HSS firmwares update for months !!! After upgrading my EL-Skyport , i jump and bought the LLB 500 Dual. I did not use it in dual mode yet , most of my testing and work was done in mono light .. Wow , the TTL and HSS works seamlessly and get some pretty good result in normal lighting situation . When strong back light is present , I had to do some fine tuning. The TTL set you right , almost all times. Then I switched to manual. I did a family portrait outdoor session . It save me a lot of time . My light meter staid in my pocket. Did about 250 shots , the battery was still very strong at the end. The system is light , flash head is very light .. Recycle time is great .. This is a great addition to my Elinchrom quadra

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Amazing I just Say: Great for elinchrom, easy use, TTl mode is amazing, I love the flash, outstanding. lightweight, construction quality very nice. The link with El Skyport is faster and automatic. I bought it because despite being expensive, in comparison with other brands, Elinchrom is superior brand and I have softboxes and RX and Dlites, I could use if without adapters. I can say, exceeded my expectations. The bag is of superior quality, the pack is very easy use configuration. I love my new lights.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Longtime Elinchrom user I have been an Elinchrom user for many years and I was all set to to jump ship to Profoto until I saw this. My BRX 500s just did a job where they were on for 8-10 hours a day for 8 days. Great quality. I hope these are as reliable. I have ordered mine. I

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Odin II protocol only supports Nikon and Canon Just received my Dual To Go Kit this week. Was trying to use it withPhottix Odin II transmitter for Pentax. Unfortunately it only supports Nikon and Canon at this moment. Hopefully more cameras are supported with future firmware update.
