The ELB 500 TTL To Go Kit was put together by the esteemed lighting manufacturer Elinchrom for photographers who require a small form factor, light weight, and superlative performance backed by the convenience of TTL exposure control. The kit includes a 500Ws ELB500 TTL pack with a lithium-ion battery, charger, and sync cord. Elinchrom ELB 500 TTL

Elinchrom steps into the TTL arena with the introduction of the ELB 500 TTL battery-powered pack. Measuring 6.4 x 7.12 x 3.6" and weighing just 5.5 lb with its separately sold battery, the ELB 500 is ideal for the traveling or location photographer shooting fashion, portraits, or editorial work. Using an optional Elinchrom Skyport Pro or the Phottix Odin II transmitter, the ELB 500 TTL greatly reduces setup delays, shortening the time between inspiration and execution by using your camera's flash exposure system. With asymmetrical power distribution over 7 stops to 2 ELB flash heads, photographers can make TTL power adjustments at distances from 328 to 656' depending on the transmitter they use. There's also a Manual Lock mode that allows you to get a TTL initial exposure "lock", and subsequently switch to manual mode to fine-tune exposure.

While the ELB 500 TTL outputs about 10 times the power as a speedlite, it has features that you'd only find on an advanced on-camera flash. The pack is High Speed Sync compatible, for example, allowing you to trigger it at shutter speeds as short as 1/8000 sec to control background brightness, freeze action, or to use wide lens apertures.

These advanced exposure features are backed by solid performance specs. Recycling is a very fast 0.05 to 2 seconds and flash duration is 1/3400 sec in Normal mode. There's also an Action mode with flash durations as short as a lightning-fast 1/20,000 sec - ideal for freezing water spray, splashes, and other effects.

The ELB 500 is powered by a separately sold removable lithium-ion battery that will give you 400 full-power flashes and an impressive 28,000 minimum-power flashes on a full charge. Convenience features include Active Charging, which allows you to charge the battery while shooting with AC power for an uninterrupted workflow. Power, performance, and TTL exposure control make the ELB 500 TTL hard to beat.

The Speed and Simplicity of TTL
The ELB 500 TTL is ideal for photographers in time sensitive shooting situations where the speed of TTL lets them capture fast-breaking images or for those who simply prefer the convenience of TTL. The pack's Manual Lock functionality allows photographers to get an initial "lock" on their exposure in TTL and then switch to manual mode to further adjust their exposure as they need or to explore different creative effects.
Wireless Convenience and Control of Skyport and Phottix Odin II
The ELB 500 TTL features a built-in Skyport receiver, Elinchrom's reliable and easy to use wireless system. Existing Skyport Plus HS for Canon and Nikon owners will be able to upgrade their transmitters to work with the ELB 500 TTL via a firmware upgrade with more brands to follow. Via their ongoing technology alliance, the ELB 500 is also compatible with the Phottix Odin II protocol. This lets a photographer trigger and control virtually any light or combination of lights in their collection with either Elinchrom or Phottix transmitters right from their camera.
Power and Performance
The ELB 500 TTL is powerful enough to overpower the sun, delivers 400 full-power flashes on a single charge and has a fast recycling time of 2 seconds at maximum power. The ELB 500 head is smaller than a speedlite yet delivers 10 times more power. It is lightweight enough to be mounted on a camera bracket or boom arm while on location.
High Speed Sync, Asymmetry and Active Charging
  • High Speed Sync lets photographers freeze motion with impressive sharpness, create a shallow depth of field, or control or darken bright backgrounds using shutter speeds as short as 1/8000 sec
  • Full asymmetry across two flash head connections provides a broad range of creative control
  • Active Charging provides the freedom to charge the battery while actively shooting in studio, making possible uninterrupted workflow
  • Photographer-Friendly Interface
The large OLED display and intuitive controls of the ELB 500 TTL makes using the pack a pleasure.
Elinchrom Li-Ion Battery for ELB 500 TTL

The removable Li-Ion Battery for ELB 500 TTL from Elinchrom is a power source that provides 400 full-power flashes or 28,000 minimum-power flashes on a full charge. The pack's Active Charging ability allows the battery to be charged when shooting while powered by AC current. The battery has no memory effect, making it immune to partial charging and discharging. A built-in Automatic Fault Detection System will disconnect the battery if temperature, voltage, or current levels exceed safe ranges.

Made exclusively for the ELB 500 TTL battery-powered pack, the ELB 500 TTL Flash Head from Elinchrom has a compact form factor of 3.5 x 3.1 x 6.3" and weighs just 1.5 lb making it ideal for hand-holding or mounting overhead on supports such as a boom. Its Quadra front accessory mount (Q-Mount) is compatible with Portalite softboxes, and can also use full-sized Elinchrom or Profoto softboxes with an optional adapter. The flash head is capable of achieving flash durations as short as 1/3400 sec. in Normal Mode and 1/20,000 sec in Action Mode for special effects. It has a 14W LED modeling light that draws minimal power from the pack's battery, a 5/8" receiver for stand mounting, and comes with an 8' cable for connection to the ELB 500 TTL.

Elinchrom Snappy Carry Bag with Shoulder Strap for ELB 500 TTL

Made from rugged ballistic nylon, the Snappy Carry Bag with Shoulder Strap for ELB 500 TTL from Elinchrom is designed for storage and transport of the battery-powered pack. The included shoulder strap is an easy way for the photographer to carry the pack but it can also be used to hang it from a light stand thanks to the bag's reinforced D-rings. The bag has a water-resistant bottom to protect the ELB 500 TTL from the elements.

Elinchrom ELB 500 TTL Kit Reviews

    Heavy

This thing is heavy! And the head is made of plastic. I should have bought the battery powered 540 for an extra $100. I have serious regrets.

Power to Weight Ratio is the best on the market

This kit will not wear out your assistant. The pack is much more convenient to shoulder and walk around with than the Profoto monolights. You can do flash pops around the space quickly and efficiently. The size of the head is TINY, but offers a well distributed powerful flash of light. The reflector fits any 7 grid. Controls are easy to use. For ~250 flashes it only depletes this amazing battery by 33%. You can still shoot while it is recharging. I love everything about it. Comes with a great case that is equally light and durable.

Great kit, a little different from most....

I received this kit from B&H a few days ago. It’s early days yet, but I have already learned some things about this kit, and have a few thoughts about how it will interface with my style and setup that I thought I would share here. Overall, it’s a very high-quality piece of equipment, a big step up in fit and finish from my previous lights. If you are reading this, you already know that it is a “pack and head” type system, which is something new to me, and takes a little getting used to. I think it will be (generally) great as a location kit, maybe not so much if there are a lot of different setups in a very confined space with a lot of people walking around, which happened on the first shoot I brought it to, but that’s another story. I bought this kit primarily because it is supposed to work with the Phottix Odin II controller, which I have been using for a couple of years now. If you want to use it this way, be aware that it will only work with the latest Odin Z operating system, which is, unfortunately incompatible with my speedlights (LumoPro 180R’s). So if I want to integrate my speedlights into my new ELB 500 setup, I will have to do so with the Elinchrom receivers and control them from the Elinchrom Transmitter Pro (also great). If you do use the Elinchrom Transmitter Pro, DO download and install the latest firmware (3.0), which will allow you to control each head (A and B) separately. But other than that, I love the HSS, which really couldn’t be easier (just turn up the shutter speed on your camera, and the ELB automatically goes into HSS mode). And although I have always used my studio lights manually, I am learning how the TTL can be really useful, in providing a starting point when shooting in a new environment. It kind of gets you in the ballpark, and you just hit “manual” and tweak it from there. Another concern had been if the flash duration was going to be fast enough to stop motion, which so far, seems not to be an issue (Action mode has a duration of up to a 20,000th of a second). I do like that the flash duration is displayed on the unit, for a given flash level. You probably will want to pick up an extension cable, for that “B” head, if you plan on using it as a hair light, as the cable the head comes with is approximately 8 feet long (not long enough to get you to the other side of the set). It’s a tad expensive, but really well made, too. The really great thing about the heads is their very small size and weight, much safer for the talent, IMHO, than other, larger, heavier and top-heavy monolights that have their batteries on the unit itself. I am coming from using Buff Einsteins, a great light, but a bit klunky, and without HSS or TTL. I understand that their new light has those options, but at 9+ pounds, with battery..... I want to also mention the carrying bag, included in the ELB to go kit, which is really terrific. I like that it neatly stows the whole, 2-head kit, with extras. Extremely high-quality case, and a real plus to the system, because it allows me to easily organize most of my lighting kit in a lightweight and compact way. The only other studio lights in the ELB’s league are those from ProFoto or Broncolor, in my opinion. If the Profoto lights are like a Mercedes, and the Broncolor lights are like a Ferrari or Maserati, the analogy for the Elinchrom ELB 500 might be a Saab. They weren’t afraid to try something different and come up with elegant and innovative solutions to common problems, which I liked, and I think why I like these lights. And, while not cheap, they are much more reasonable than the “Mercedes” or “Ferrari” options.

Great, with a few things to consider

Right off the bat, let me say I love these lights. The light quality is consistent, the recycle time is fast even on the higher settings, all in a small package perfect for location work. Now, some things I personally don't love. I wish the housing for the bulbs were a little heftier feeling. Not heavier, just made from a slightly thicker plastic. It might be the fact that they weigh practically nothing that makes me cautious about their durability, but that's why I think a sturdier feeling plastic might help. Since this is my first set of Elinchroms I'm now looking at replacing my Photek Softlighter II, which I love, with another Photek Softlighter II that has a 7mm umbrella shaft instead of the standard 8mm. That seems like more work on my end to have something I already have, when Elinchrom could just bore out 1mm in their lights. In this day and age propriety of lighting modifiers doesn't do lighting companies, or their customers, any favors.

    Easy peasy set up.

I thought about a mono light and I prefer a system that is not top heavy, if you put one of these lightweight heads on a boom or have someone hold it on a monopod, it does not weigh much... The battery also helps weigh down the stand and modifier so it won't tip over. I did have to order an additional adapter for my octoboxes. There is somewhat of a learning curve using the system with a Fuji Pro Transmitter, all readouts are easy to read and see. I only did one shoot with the ELB 500 and I'm loving it so far!

Just what I was looking for!

I have been considering a number of options for battery powered TTL location strobes, but was nervous about having a heavier moonlight up in the air. If you dont know, its fairly windy in the Texas Panhandle! I had the opportunity to use another photographers ELB 500 kit while at Shutterfest and loved it. Everything that is up in the air is very light making it stable on a stand, or super easy for an assistant to handhold on a boom. The pack and battery unit are reasonably light too and easy to shoulder or hang on a stand. With Skyport exposures are accurate and easy to control. The light color is superb, and with an adapter full-size Elinchrom modifiers can be used. I have a 12x55 strip on a head right now and love it. I was weighing this against the Profoto B2s, but more power at a better price...Im happy.

    Different manufacturing country

All my previous purchases of Elinchrom items were made in Swiss. This recent purchase indicated it was made in another country. If I would know it earlier, there would have many other brand options at this price.

    One Word Of Caution

All the wonderful compliments about these strobes apply. These flash heads are designed for umbrella use, and Elinchrom makes absolutely the best pro umbrellas. So, that's easy. But you must use great caution when inserting and removing the umbrella shaft from the ELB flash head. The flash tube is exposed right there with no cover. The umbrella shaft will smack the tube on removal unless you make an effort to protect it. I use a clean folded cloth over the tube, then pull the shaft out. Otherwise, this kit can't be beat. I got the extension power cable and the matching 7 grid reflector for the head that came with that tiny saucer reflector. Good to go, confident in Elinchrom quality. Their website is also amazing with lots of help and inspiration.
