You don't HAVE to. The bag can be swung off one shoulder and you can unzip the bottom area where the camera equipment is designed to be stored.

Since the Cooper backpack splits in the middle to access the camera, it cannot have a laptop sleeve in the back, otherwise the bag would not be able to flex enough to allow access to the camera gear. The tablet sleeve is above the split, that's why it works even if there is camera gear inside. However, if you are not carrying a camera for the day, and you were to remove the horizontal divider between the padded bottom camera section and the top soft compartment, then a 13-inch laptop can fit in the bag. I carry a 13-inch laptop in mine all the time.
