Syrp Genie II Reviews

So-so design with poor motor that underperforms

I ordered, and returned, two Genie II Linear motor drives for my Syrp magic carpet slider system. I bought them because I thought Syrp had engineered a compact motor drive and track system that would be portable enough for reliable use on location with a small mirrorless camera system. Unfortunately, I've learned otherwise. The first unit arrived with a defective battery that would not take a charge. The second unit took a charge but proved to be a big disappointment. It barely maintained speed in one direction and was erratic while moving in the opposite direction. The unit simply strained under the weight of a Fujifilm XT-5 and an 18mm lens. The Genie II's motor connects to a capstan that encloses the drive cord, which is stretched to and wrapped around each end of the slider track. The unit's motor passes the cord through the capstan, pulling itself and your gear along the track. At least that's how it should work in theory... Besides the underperforming motor, I had three concerns about the Genie II's capstan and drive cord. The first is that the cord repeatedly lost tension after the motor completed a few passes along the track. This meant periodically pulling the cord taught and re-securing it at the ends of the track. I suspect the problem may have resulted from my second concern, which is also inherent in the design of this system. As the motor unit approaches either end of the track, the angle (and friction) at which the cord enters the capstan naturally increases. This added resistence increases the stress on the cord and the capstan, which is transferred to the unit's motor and battery. My third concern also relates to these stresses: both the motor unit and the capstan have plastic gears. I wonder how durable these gears would prove under frequent, sustained use? When considered alongside other reviewers' concerns about the problems with Syrp's batteries, I cannot recommend this system to anyone who seeks a reliable motorized slider system for videography.

Usually great but with a HUGE flaw in design!

Let me first say I love the whole system. The slider is one of the best out there. And when you have all the parts combined you get reliable and dependable moves controlled by a very simple app. However what lets this whole system down is the design of the lever which locks the baseplate. It's terrible. It's made of cheap plastic parts glued together and can easily snap off and break into pieces leaving you with a useless paper weight. It's happened to me twice. Another reviewer had the same issue. Customer service is good though and they deal with it rather efficiently. However SYRP needs to replace this with a machined metal part because it's an unnecessary waste of time dealing with the return and replacement of the unit.
