Aputure AL-F7 overview

  • 1Description

The Aputure Amaran AL-F7 On-Camera Variable Color LED Light is an on-camera LED light that utilizes 256 LEDs with a CRI of 95+ to deliver variable color illumination with high color accuracy. This fixture features variable color temperature output from 3200 to 9500K. The fixture's 45° beam angle produces a brightness of 1500 lux at 3.3' when set to 5500K.

A stepless dimming dial is provided on the back of the unit for adjusting light output from 1 to 100%. Color temperature and brightness are also controlled by a single stepless rotating knob. The built-in LCD screen provides information on the remaining battery charge, color temperature, and brightness. Two 1/4"-20 threaded mounting holes, one on top and one at the bottom of the fixture, provide for a variety of mounting possibilities.

Key Features
  • 256 LEDs with 45° beam angle.
  • 3200 to 9500K variable color temperature light fixture.
  • High CRI of ≥95.
  • Stepless dimming dial for adjusting light output from 1 to 100%.
  • Powered by an L-series battery, D-Tap, or USB-C.
Because the light has a variable color range of 3200 to 9500K, when the light is set to 5500K (daylight balanced) both sets of LEDs are on at full, providing the maximum brightness from this fixture when compared to using the light at 3200 or 9500K.
The LCD screen provides information on the fixture's output as well as the charge state of the battery. The screen also indicates whether the adjustment knob is controlling brightness or color temperature. To switch from brightness to CCT or CCT to brightness, just apply a short press to the adjustment knob.
The included cold shoe ball joint adapter enables mounting the light to your camera's accessory shoe via the 1/4"-20 threaded hole on the fixture. In addition, the bottom of the cold shoe foot features a 3/8"-16 threaded hole, and includes a 3/8"-16 to 1/4"-20 reducing bushing.
Included with the fixture is a diffusion filter.

    Aputure AL-F7 reviews

Amaran AL-F7 On-Camera Variable Color LED Light (3200 to 9500K) is rated 4.0 out of 5 by 11.
Rated 4 out of 5 by from Light is great! Accessories not so much. The light itself is everything I expected it to be. Very bright (Brighter than I think I would ever need at 5600K) Battery life is incredible, adjustment dial is easy to use and the display is easy to read. Cons: I wish you could attach both of the supplied diffusers at the same time - there is only room for one. The coldshoe mount is improperly sized. It doesn't fit in anything I own. I've tried it in three different cages, and two cameras. It seems to be too thick in the center. I can see that the actual square base is the right size, but the pillar/tube that attaches it to the rest of the mount is actually too thick so you can only get the mount to slide in 30% of the way. Bummer because now I'll have to go buy a new coldshoe-1/4 adapter mount.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Fantastic light I have many Aputure lights. These new AL-F7 lights are great. They are very bright for their size at 5600K (see below). They are also very sturdy, especially compared to the H198s that these will be replacing. The new lights are smaller, sturdier, brighter, and they are dual-color. What's not to like! :) The new ball mount is very sturdy and is a big improvement over the ball mounts that came with the H198. I have two issues: 1. The color temperature reported on the back of the light isn't accurate. All four of my lights produce ~5100K light when the dial on the back is set to 5600K. I have to go up to about 6400K on the dial to get 5500K light. I verified this with my light meter and cameras. For my work, this isn't a big deal as I will balance my cameras to the light anyway. 2. All of my ball mounts were defective. They would not fit in a hot/cold shoe as they had been machined incorrectly. Luckily, Aputure's *great* customer service took care of it and promptly sent me new ball mounts. So, you should probably check your ball mount as soon as you get the light to see if yours is defective. The ball mounts were not available separately from B&H when I called. So TL;DR Great lights, with one minor issue (for me)

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Defective ball mount. The ball mount that comes with this light doesn't fit the hot shoe of any camera. I don't care if the leds are great and have a super high CRI if I cannot use the light.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from practical, bright and controllable threw my hat into the ring here for a new light and knew I had to wait for the launch. I have not been disappointed. A great light, with high degree of controllable values. Compared to other lights I have, the build may be a little suspect (plastic over metal). But don't worry, I've dropped mine twice, onto wooden floors and hotel carpets and nothing - I repeat, nothing, has happened. Bought a two new watson batteries to power it and I'm hoping not to think about another acquisition for a couple more years now.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Wish I ordered 2 The Aputure AL-F7 is a well designed product, and I really enjoy using it. It's super bright while being compact. I mainly use it as a normal LED light on a light stand running on NPF batteries instead of as an on camera light. For the $100 price tag, I'd say it's well worth the money. I only wish that it had the ability to be controlled remotely like the HR672S, would've been open to even spending $50 or so more just to have that feature. Still love this product though.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Very good at this price point I have several low price LEDs at price range from $100 to $250 and so far this is the most best buy one. Pros: fully controllable color temp and light intensity, brightness, build quality (although it is plastic), quality of supplied accessories, good size and weight for on or off camera use, brightness at most when in daylight CT Hope Aputure can design lightweight custom accessories such as softbox or grids that can control light spill.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Not worth the hype. The light is fine but not really worth the hype in my opinion. Plastic is pretty cheap and it's not as bright as other cheaper bi-color lights with decent CRI. The wider kelvin range and power options are the only real advantages in my opinion. YN stuff has higher output, softer light, and RGB options at a better value.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from So far, so good I've only had these a couple of weeks, but love them so far. Easy to mount quickly for events, now not having to deal with cold/hot shoes. Lights are nice and bright, no flicker. Also, slim and easy to carry. And they don't eat battery like previous models. Definitely a solid upgrade. I own 2 and may order more. Well done, Aputure.
