Manfrotto Befree GT Travel Carbon Fiber Tripo... Overview

Sporting a 26.5 lb load capacity at a weight of only 3.4 lb, this black Befree GT Travel Tripod from Manfrotto is designed for professional photographers needing a reliable travel companion for their DSLR or mirrorless cameras. It features a sturdy carbon fiber construction, reaching a maximum height of 63.8" with the center column extended and 54.3" when the column is collapsed. For storage, the tripod folds down to 16.9" in length and can be easily carried in its included padded bag while traveling.

Each leg of the Befree GT is composed of four sections, which can be adjusted and secured in seconds thanks to the M-lock twist locks that operate with a simple 90° turn. A side-pull selector allows you to unfold the legs and lock them at three different angles, making for an easy way to regulate your height. Complementing the legs is the equally robust 496 ball head, which offers a dedicated knob for panoramic movement as well as a friction control knob for precise control over the tension during use. The final element is a quick release plate, which is compatible with both RC2 and Arca-type clamps except for the Manfrotto 804-3W and MH804-3W tripod heads.

An Easy Link attachment is available at the top portion of the leg section, and allows you to connect optional accessories such as flashes or reflectors. This enables you to use the tripod as a support system and reduce the amount of gear you need to carry while travelling. Additionally, rubberized feet are used to avoid skidding and help keep the tripod stable in most types of terrain. The Befree GT is compatible with both 1/4"-20 and 3/8"-16 threaded mounts, thanks to an included bushing adapter that allows you to switch between the two screw sizes.

  • Can hold gear weighing up to 26.5 lb, including most DSLR or pro mirrorless cameras fitted with telephoto lenses
  • Carbon fiber construction makes for a sturdy tripod while keeping its weight at 3.4 lb
  • Four leg sections which extend and fasten via its twist locks
  • Maximum height of 63.8" with column extended and 54.3" with column retracted, folds down to 16.9" for storage
  • Side button allows you to select between three different leg angles

Manfrotto Befree GT Travel Carbon Fiber Tripod

Reasonably light for the cost and easily holds my gear (Nikon D850 with 24-70 and 70-200 f2.8). The height is just right for me as I don't need to extend the center column much (I'm around 5 ft 8 in). Used it in the canyons in Utah. The tripod is more stable than I expected and though there is some plastic (the center column lock) the tripod feels robust.

Light weight and good looking

I like to use good looking gear. I know it should not matter as long as the tool works, but it does matter to me. This tripod is as pleasing to the eye as it is useful and easy to setup. I really like the low weight and compact size for travel. I am pleased with my purchase of the Manfrotto Befree GT carbon fiber.

Very sturdy travel tripod

It is very sturdy travel tripod. I do not like too light travel tripod with just higher support weight because it can be flexible when I use on location specially if I use it with video head (some times). This GT version is a little bigger than most travel version but much more sturdier. I replaced Manfrotto quick clamp to Arca-Swiss which I like a lot better.

Perfect for travel

It's small and light enough to pack for your travels and carry around once at your destination. Pretty sturdy and stable. Easy to handle and adjust. Plenty of accessories available to make it more all around than it is. Some plastic parts I can see won't last very long. Overall I'm happy.

Good but for only has rubber feet

Appears well made and easy to use. Using a arca-swiss adapter (especially if using a L bracket) will give you a broad range of choices. I find the arca type RC2 to be flexible and work well without issues. The one totally inexplicable feature is that you only have a choice of the rubber feet.... for a supposedly high quality travel tripod, which is really strange and would be a game changer in certain situations. I leave the tripod at home when traveling due to this issue.

Wonderful tripod. Very sturdy and stable even in windy conditions. I like how you can invert the center post to get lower shots. It is a bit heavy though so keep that in mind.

Worth the extra $$

It's slightly better than the aluminum version in my opinion but they are very similar. It feels more solid than the aluminum and does what some of my heavier tripods do for me. For example, if you have a larger camera and and you have attachments and you're shooting outdoors, the aluminum legs might shimmer ever so slightly. Once it's set up, it holds really well. There's no slippage etc. On the ball head like you get with comparable brands and slightly less expensive builds.

question

I just got this tripod and I'm unhappy with tension control on the head: it has almost no tension of its own, so it's way too easy to turn accidentally. Does it act like that on all of these tripods or do I just have a defective one?
Asked by: Konstantin
Please look to the end of the large knob. There you see recessed dial set within that locking knob can be rotated to apply tension control to the ball-and-socket joint's movements. On the opposite side of the ball head, a secondary locking knob controls the ability to rotate the head 360.

looking for a camera lens for my trip to Paris. I have a sony alpha 6400 and a mc-11 teleconverter. I assume at wide angle but I have no idea.
Asked by: Scott
I own Nikon, but in general the Tripod will carry easily any lens up to 70-200 f2.8 and beyond. If you consider a wide angle - it will be lighter, not heavier than this. Then go-for-it. The tripod is excellent - but thin desert dust may enter the legs screws. Be aware. I hope this helps.
