Ilford Multigrade FB Classic Glossy Overview

This 10-sheet pack of 9.5 x 12" Multigrade FB Classic Variable Contrast Paper from Ilford is a baryta-coated fiber base paper with a glossy finish designed for traditional black & white photo printing. This paper features a double weight of 255 gsm and a white base tint providing neutral colors. Additionally, it is variable contrast paper with seven full grades of contrast available. These grades are accessible with the use of speed-matched filters.

Multigrade FB Classic is designed for use with all enlargers and is equally suitable for printing from conventional negatives and from XP2 Super negatives. Safelights are recommended to have dark orange, dark brown, or red filters and a 15W bulb.

Excellent fiber paper with beautiful tones and contrast

I’ve been very happy with this paper for darkroom printing. The surface has a beautiful glossy finish, and I’ve been able to get rich blacks, good highlight separation, and excellent tonal range using split-grade printing. The paper feels hefty and produces a more refined print than RC paper. ..It does require extra washing and drying , but that’s expected and worth it when I’m making prints I really care about. The box arrived quickly and was packaged very securely, with no damage to the paper.

Continue to be impressed at the ability of this paper to print at a very wide range of contrasts. Occasionally I have a negative that I want to print with carbon transfer which uses a higher density range and the Ilford Classic lets me proof these negatives for this labor intensive process with an actual print throughout its listed contrast range. Bravo!
