Canon EF 70-200mm f/4L IS II USM Overview

  • 1Description

Mixing a relatively compact, lightweight form factor with updated stabilization and performance, the EF 70-200mm f/4L IS II USM from Canon is an impressively versatile telephoto zoom. Well-suited for a range of subjects, from events to portraiture to sports, this zoom is characterized by its constant f/4 maximum aperture to strike a balance between consistent performance and portability. Its optical design includes a pair of UD elements and one fluorite element to greatly reduce chromatic aberrations and color fringing. This optimized design, along with a Super Spectra coating, also helps to control flare and ghosting for greater contrast and color accuracy when working in harsh lighting and backlit conditions.

Version II of this popular lens also sees the inclusion of a revised Optical Image Stabilizer, which now compensates for five stops of camera shake and offers three distinct stabilization modes to suit different shooting applications. A ring-type USM and internal focusing mechanism also afford quick, quiet, and accurate autofocus performance, as well as full-time manual focus override. Additionally, this lens is weather-sealed for use in trying environmental conditions.

Versatile telephoto zoom is designed for full-frame Canon EF-mount DSLRs however, it can also be used with APS-C models where it provides a 112-320mm equivalent focal length range.
Constant f/4 maximum aperture affords consistent performance throughout the zoom range and also contributes to the relatively lightweight design and compact form factor.
One fluorite element and two ultra-low dispersion glass elements noticeably reduce color fringing and chromatic aberrations for high clarity and color fidelity.
Super Spectra coating has been applied to individual elements to minimize ghosting and flare for greater contrast and color neutrality when working in strong lighting conditions.
An Optical Image Stabilizer helps to minimize the appearance of camera shake by up to five shutter speed stops to better enable working in low-light conditions and with slower shutter speeds. Additionally, three dedicated image stabilization modes are available (Standard, During Exposure Only, and Panning) and can be selectively employed to suit a variety of types of shooting.
A ring-type Ultrasonic Motor (USM), along with an internal focusing system, is employed to deliver fast, precise, and quiet autofocus performance as well as full-time manual focus override.
Focus Limiter switch lets you constrain the focusing to two different ranges to suit different applications: 3.3'-infinity or 9.8'-infinity.
Rounded nine-blade diaphragm contributes to a pleasing out of focus quality that benefits the use of shallow depth of field and selective focus techniques.
As a member of the esteemed L-series, this lens is sealed against dust and moisture for working in inclement environmental conditions.
Optional AII(WII) Tripod Mount Ring is available and benefits working with the lens atop a tripod or monopod.
Compatible with optional EF 1.4X and EF 2X teleconverters.

Canon EF 70-200mm f/4L IS II USM Reviews

EF 70-200mm f/4L IS II USM Lens is rated 4.9 out of 5 by 38.
Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great Lens I recently purchased this lens with the intent on shooting my nephews wedding next September. I wanted to shoot with it before the wedding to make sure I didnt need to return it and upgrade to the 2.8 version. I do not need to upgrade. this lens focuses fast, the image stabilization is fast and the images surpass my expectations, even in low light. I like the fact the zoom is internal and the manual focus over-ride is a plus. I have already used this lens for birthday parties, nature, landscape, and my next endeavor with this lens will be portraits. I am quite pleased with this lens and if you are having second trouble deciding, well, let me assure you, you will not be disappointed.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from I love this lens! I previously owned version 1 of this lens but sold it when I purchased the f/2.8 version. While the f/2.8 is a fabulous lens, it is quite heavy and I found that I wasn't taking my camera along with me as much as I used to, or wanted to. I have been planning to purchase another f/4 and when the version II came out I bit the bullet and did it. I am so happy I did!! I love the lens, it is incredibly sharp and so much lighter than the f/2.8. The f/4 is suitable for most of what I shoot and its ease of use (for my old arthritic wrists and thumbs) is bringing joy back to my photography. I will keep the f/2.8 for use with a tripod, but most of my everyday shooting will happily be with the f/4.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Amazing sharpness and IS After owning a 70-200 L IS 2.8 for 12 years (and loving the pictures) I needed to "lighten up" my camera bag for travel, and decided to go for the new 70-200 L IS 4.0. Great results straight out of the box, very much lighter and easier to carry around, probably the best sharpness in the pictures of any of my lenses (ok, 16-35 IS pretty close), the IS delivers and this so much lighter and easy to have on the camera. Focus and IS are very quiet. I guess this boils down to the argument that the best lens is the one you have with you, and trading f:2.8 for f:4 does that for me.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Amazing lens!!! Bought this lens primarily because is lighter and easier for my wife to carry around. Also own the 70-200mm 2.8 II, just the perfect combo. I was looking forward to purchase this lens when I try the one without IS couple of years ago. The pictures that came out of that lens were incredible. The IS on this lens is superb and being able to take pictures at 1/15 @ 200mm and they are tack sharp. Right now the only reason I take my 2.8 with me is if my wife is using the F/4 or in low light situations. Unless you have the money or specifically need the 2.8 version this lens is outstanding and we love it.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Light and Good The image quality challenges those of the 2.8II that I use to have at half the weight. The first version of this lens made a lot of noise, so I thought of it as a toy and sold it. I do a lot of traveling, and all I need is this lens and my 16-35mm. Carrying the 2.8II all day is a real pain.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great Lens, Easy To Use I received this lens in the mail, and within one hour was on my way to a sports event. I attached the lens to the camera, read two paragraphs on operation and began using the lens. Wow !! Great photos. Great quality. Super colors.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Superb Lens This is my 5th L lens and may very well become my favorite due to its versatility, weight, great IS and image quality. I wrestled with whether to get the f/2.8 lll, but, after reading the reviews, it seemed that the only advantage was the 1-stop aperture availability, which is a valid consideration. But, the advantage of the f/4 is it is half the weight and has much better IS (5 stops vs 3). The weight was a major factor, along with not feeling the $800 price difference was warranted for my personal use. After having shot with it for a month, I am truly delighted with my choice. The image quality of the 70-200 is exquisite. I've kept it on my 5D4 and used it in a variety of venues, but have particularly enjoyed it on hikes in the forests here in the Blue Ridge Mountains. It is light enough not to cause neck soreness and has an ideal range of focal lengths for my shooting. And the expanded IS allows for sharper hand-held shooting in the shaded environment. I carry a 16-35 f/2.8 with me also, but am finding that 90% of my shots are with the 70-200. The combination of those 2 lenses has largely replaced my 24-105 f/4, while giving me a greater range of reach and creativity. It will also be a great travel lens. Also, because of its light weight, I find no need for a tripod mount.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Fantastic lens with only one reservation This lens is superb in all aspects except for one which I will talk about later. The image quality is absolutely top notch; the sharpness we all want is there, the colors and contrast are exactly what you would expect from an L lens, and the background blur is creamy at all distances that I've tried. The auto focus is blazing fast and, more importantly, accurate. The DPAF focus transitions that I get on my C200 are smooth, quick and sure... very STM-like. I was afraid they would be jerky like earlier USM lenses. This was a very nice surprise! The image stabilization is a life saver an allows me to shoot acceptable 4K video at 200mm... handheld! IT is quiet and well-behaved with no jumping or anything. The IS mode 3 is interesting but I haven't really found a use for it. The only thing I would caution about this lens is that the focus distance has been reduced from 1.2m on the first version to 1m on this second version. Because of this, many version 1 owners might be tempted to upgrade, especially if you do lots of flower shots, little critter shots, etc. I found in my testing that the image quality takes a slight hit at 200mm, minimum focus distance, and a wide open aperture. If you zoom out to 180mm the quality is fine. Or if you stay at 200 but take a couple steps back it is fine. By the time you are 2m away (which won't even fully frame a human head) the image quality is back to being phenomenal. I don't know where the transition point is but tight headshots are definitely in the phenomenal image quality region. But 200mm/MFD/wide open is very slightly soft. The image quality in this circumstance is more than good enough for web use and, if I'm being honest, probably good enough for large prints. Its just that the quality in this one circumstance is not as phenomenal as every other circumstance. All in all, I give it a perfect 5 stars for my uses which is human and pet portraiture, weddings, events, and sports/action photography. This lens equals (or betters) the f/2.8 in every single category. The only thing this lens cannot do that the f/2.8 version can do is open up the aperture one stop wider. Many will wonder if they should get the f/4 or save up for the f/2.8 and I'd say that unless you need that one stop of extra light or the 1 stop of extra background blur (1 stop of blur isn't a huge difference according to my testing) then save yourself some money and chiropractor appointments by getting the cheaper, smaller, lighter, mostly better f/4 version. This new lens is fantastic and well worth its price and space in the bag. Unless, of course, you really HAVE TO shoot at absolute minimum focus distance all the time.

No, it comes with a soft cloth bag cover. It is not the more durable canvas zippered case that comes with the 2.8 L versions.
