Hollyland Cosmo Overview

  • 1Description

The Hollyland Cosmo 2000 allows you to transmit an HDMI/SDI signal up to 2000' to an HDMI or dual SDI outputs. The transmitter/receiver set supports up to 1080p60 signals with a latency of <1 ms. The transmitter also offers an SDI loop-through output and 3.5mm stereo audio input. The system operates on the 5.1 to 5.9 GHz frequency band and is encrypted to prevent video leakage—only the matched receiver shows clear images; unmatched receivers are unable to, even when on the same frequency. One of the outstanding features of this Cosmo 2000 is a built-in software optimization for use with the ARRI ALEXA Mini. The Cosmo 2000 was designed to successfully handle playback on the ALEXA Mini without waiting. Other features include an OLED screen and a smart cooling fan that automatically kicks in whenever the temperature reaches extreme highs.

The transmitter is designed to be powered via its 4-pin LEMO connector only, and the receiver features a V-mount battery plate and a 4-pin LEMO connector. Two D-Tap to LEMO cables are included to provide the flexibility to power both units via a cable connection to compatible batteries. The transmitter uses two antennas and the receiver five antennas. All seven plus a spare are included, and two mushroom antennas are also supplied as replacements for the transmitter antennas.

    Hollyland Cosmo Reviews

Cosmo 2000 HDMI/SDI Wireless Video Transmission System is rated 5.0 out of 5 by 1.
Rated 5 out of 5 by from Move out of the way Teradek, Hollyland is here! Teradek The Industry Standard of professional wireless Transmission products...should be scared right now. Hollyland as a company is not well known, yet. But their Cosmo Product line seems to be of superb quality. Ive had the chance to test out this 2000 model and I have nothing but great experiences and things to say about it. This unit in particular is built like a tank, fully metal enclosure with a built in fan for added cooling capacity apart from the sad heat sink designs that most transmitters sport. It has an OLED display which is highly useful, telling me the status of the unit, the temperature of the units, the signal strength and channel it is on etc. The thing I like about their cosmo line of transmitters is both HDMI and SDI are standard on all their units. Whereas with Teradek, you need to pay them a hefty premium for the addition of an HDMI port. Keep in mind that Hollyland transmitters use the same Israeli circuit board and chipsets as Teradek so they have the same wireless capabililties, but where I think Hollyland beats Teradek is in thier single channel design. Teradek designs their units to be constantly variably changing and searching for a better frequency. This sometimes can lead to finding a better one, but in my experience it sometimes drops the original signal, not always, its very rare of course but that is the tradeoff of this variable design. Hollyland designed their units to be married to a single channel/frequency which once youve found a good channel, it will keep a strong signal all day unless something changes. Keep in mind you have to manually change the frequency channel due to the fixed design but it only needs to be changed if the original channel isnt working well for some reason. Because of this design, a lot of reviewers have stated achieving further than rated transmissions, for example, a Cosmo 400 has been known to work up to the 500-600 ft range before breaking up which is stellar for their base model of transmitters!! I have not tested the effective range of this 2000 model, but in all circumstances that Ive used it, it hasnt had any issue of connectivity. Ive heard accounts of using this unit in baseball stadiums with astounding results where a comparable Teradek 2000 unit failed. The only situation that I have seen degraded performance is when transmitting through walls (not line of sight) but thats to be expected in any transmitter. The unit I received for demo came in a small hard case which I believe comes with the unit when you purchase it as well as some nice added accessories like a crab clamp and a few extra antennae. My demo unit had a v mount  back plate on the receiver which I wonder if it comes with the purchase of this unit. If so then it was a great added bonus that I used extensively on all my shoots to power the transmitter and even a few monitors with a d-tap breakout box! There is no visible latency as it is advertised as less than 1ms of latency which I can say I cannot perceive any latency which is good for pulling focus as a 1st AC. Again these units use the same chipset as Teradeks. One of the unique features that I loved from this wireless unit was the programming for instant Arri playback!  In most transmitters, when you switch to playback on an Arri camera like say the Alexa mini, it drops feed for a quick second which usually throws off the transmitter into thinking theres no signal being fed to it so they usually drop the signal to the receiver and it takes like 3 seconds for it the signal to come back up on the receiver side. With the programming and optimization done on these units, there is no drop in signal and playback is instant, no dropped signal! Saving time on set is saving money! One thing I will say is there is usually no visible compression or artifacts, I say usually because its all dependant on how strong the signal is. The signal on this unit is strong most of the time though. I have not tested the AES 128 bit encryption, Im not even sure how to test for that really but it is a good security feature to have if shooting highly sensitive content that is under NDA or otherwise. These units are apparently able to utilize 2 or more receivers so you can build a 1:2 or 1:3 system if thats what you need which is a nice upgrade path if you hope to upgrade in the future. All in all, this and presumably all of the Cosmo line from Hollyland are solid transmitters. Great price to performance, great build quality and a plethora of features available. If youre considering purchasing any of their transmitters, dont sit on the fence, just buy one. Its nice to have competition to Teradek because now they will realize that they dont own the market and that they should continually be competitive for our money and attention. Thank you Hollyland for making a great product!

greetings recently we acquired a cosmo 2000 ...

greetings recently we acquired a cosmo 2000 system in bhphotovideo which we have noticed some differences in the handling in comparison to the demo videos that show on this web page. for example, the video shows the equipment with scan functions and 6 working channels access to the menu in the receiver. pressing the button for 6 seconds and ours only shows 4 channels and does not enter the menu function when we press the menu button for 6 seconds! It could be that we have some problem with this equipment we need help to determine why this behavior?
