Can the silver end be unscrewed therefore providing female on both ends of the rod?
Yes, the SmallRig 15mm Micro Rod with 1/4"-20 Thread (1.5") (B&H #SM915) consists of two pieces that may be separated. If you unscrew the silver colored 1/4"-20 double male connector then you will have a separate black rod with 1/4"-20 female threads on both ends and of course that separate silver colored double male connector.

If the rod has a 1/4"-20 thread at the end of it, then yes, it will screw into the end.
