Lensbaby Sol 45mm f/3.5 Reviews

Nice budget option for Lensbaby select focus effects

I opted for this Lensbaby lens after trying out Fixed Body with Creative Bokeh Optic first. I got this Sol 45 mm lens at a discounted price. It was fun play with selective focus with an option for small tilt, it really encouarges you to be creative with compositions. People's and animals' portraits and night landscapes with backlighting can be fun! The small lens feels well made and relatively simple to use. It is sharp in the focal point and contrasty. The fixed f-stop at 3.5 might is restrictive but adequate. I didn't seem to like the texture effects that can be created with front blades. I would say this lens is a good bridge between cheaper and professional Lensbaby choices, while letting to render a sharp, narrow sweet spot effect with an optional tilt.

Super Compact, Fun, and Beautiful Effect Lens

If you love everything about Lensbaby lenses, this should be on top of the list! This is my second Lensbaby product and it's not at all disappointing! If you follow through how to use Lensbaby in general with manual focus, this is super easy to adapt and the bokeh is simply beautiful.

Forget Bokeh, This Effect is Magic!

I purchased the Sol 45 to force me out of my auto focus comfort zone and to have a little fun. It did both and did so better than expected! I mounted it to a Canon R5 and went to the County Fair with a willing subject to find some magic. The focus ring has large movement for small chance so it allowed me to easily dial in to the exact spot I wanted. The results were spectacular. The blur alone added a remarkable amount of depth and motion but with the blades pushed inward, the lines create a subtle framing of the focus spot that mimics long-exposure camera-shake while the center is tack sharp. The depth delivered in black and white was more than I expected as well. I'll be ordering the wider Sol soon.

This is a great little lens, it's one of the easiest Lensbabies to learn. I use it on my Nikon Df because the combination gives a retro look to my images.

Love it

I bought this on a whim thinking it would enhance some nature photography shots of flowers. Being winter, I've been shooting other subjects and I'm loving how the lens can be used to direct the viewer's focus to a specific region of the photo. While I thought my use of this lens would be very limited, I'm finding that experimenting with a wide range of subjects is yielding very good and very interesting results. (though I keep hearing do you know your photos are blurry?). I'm still experimenting and can't wait till spring, but this lens is a very welcome addition.

I recently purchased the Velvet 56 for my Canon 90D and was thrilled with the results. What I really like about the SOL 45 is that if you do not need to step down to 5.6 and higher, fixed at 3.5 will produce sharp images in the center and dreamy on the edges. Superb construction and very small! The price is a real bargain for a product of this high quality! You must use Live View and focus tweaking to get the best images. The small focus ring in the front is easy to use once you practice using it. This lens is like carrying a special effects lab on the front of your camera!

Is it avalable for the canon mirrorless?
Asked by: Daphne
I do believe it comes as an RF mount for canon mirrorless. You might check the lensbaby website for confirmation. My old lensbaby canon ef lenses do work with the canon EF/RF adaptor. You have to set the camera to shoot without a lens for the shutter to release.

My Canon R6 won't shoot with the Sol 45mm. I get F00 message. What's wrong?
Asked by: Marilyn
As the Lensbaby Sol 45mm f/3.5 Lens for Canon EF Cameras is a fully manual lens and has no electronic contacts, the Canon EOS R6 Mirrorless Camera does not know a lens is connected when using this lens on the camera. As such, you would need to go into the camera's menu under the Custom Function Menu (Tab 4), and under [Release Shutter w/o Lens], select [ON: Enable], which will allow you to release the shutter of your camera when using the Lensbaby Sol 45mm f/3.5 Lens for Canon EF Cameras (or a third-party lens with a manual lens adapter).

How is this different from a Lensbaby Sweet 50mm lens?
Asked by: Andrew
The main difference is how they mount to the camera. The Sweet 50 requires a Composer Pro lens to attach to the camera while the Sol 45mm has a direct lens mount.

With a Nikon D750, do I use Aperture priority? Is this lens difficult to learn how to use?
Asked by: Lynn
Yes, you do. The instructions in the manual will tell you to use Aperture. I use the D750 also. Lensbaby are all manual focus so it can be a challenge to use. My eyes are not the best so I do have to work at the focusing. I just bought the Velvet 85 and it is challenging also. But that being said, I love this little lens! It really can be fun. Here is a shot I did with the Sol 45. https://www.flickr.com/photos/kellykayhorne/48922189672/in/dateposted/
