The scanner is very fast which is perhaps the reason most people buy it. Scan quality is ok at best. Dark areas have a very significant amount of noise. Not the pretty kind. My printer scanner does much better at this and it's a cheap one. Photos look blurry to me, perhaps I'm expecting too much. Software is terrible. On Windows 11, it needs to run as an administrator. This has been a no-no for years and years and Espon has not updated its software. If you don't run as admin, your user will not have permission to the files unless you make a copy. I've found posts about this issue for years.

I started a small business helping families digitize their photos and this scanner scratched my clients' original photos! Unfortunately, I didn't catch the damage until I completed multiple projects. It wasn't until I noticed the lines in the digital image while editing, and I tilted the original photos under a light to see symmetrical lines cutting down the middle of each of the photos. I was mortified and didn't accept payment from my client for that project. I then ordered new machines hoping I had received a dud... turns out... Epson FastFoto FF-680W IS THE DUD!! When I reached out to Epson for solutions-their response was a default response. Have you cleaned it? Are you sure the machine is clean? Could there be ANY dust in the machine? I don't think so, but I'm not in an isolation chamber... so there MAY be a dust particle in the scanner. Did you use the carrier sheets? Yes I did and the machine scratched the carrier sheets up as well. Carrier sheet defeat the purpose of a FAST scanner. Using them is just like using a flatbed-it takes SOOOOO much time! It wasn't until I started having issues when I read the reviews-my mistake! According to online forums, people have been having trouble with this scanner FOR YEARS and NOTHING has been done to fix the problem. There is clearly a design flaw. After purchasing multiple Epson machines, I now need to invest in a different scanner that does not damage the original photos.

Can this scan photos with deckled edges without using the carrier sheet?

I have not tried to scan photos with deckled edges but here is my assessment. This scanner grabs the photo with central rollers and pulls it through the scanner exactly in that alignment with no real need for edges to be against guides. I feed in tiny receipts not touching the edge guides and how I feed them is how they are scanned. I think you could cut the edge with pinking shears and the scanner would pull photos through straight, with no alteration in alignment. The problem would be variation in thickness, not odd edges. The scanner will reject anything thicker than one layer of clear tape repair on the photo but not more. This prevents it from ever pulling two photos through and only scanning one.

Yes you can put the output folder on internal and external drives. You still have to use the software to do the scanning.
