I had to fiddle with it a little to get it formatted for the Mac, it came formatted in exFAT, I think it's more efficient in APFS. Fast, small and reliable so far.

always works out-of-box

I have a few of these - never any problems unless I drop one which almost always kills it & best not to run on USB hubs

Works right out of the box

SMR Slow

By Viktor
Rated 1 out of 5
Date: 2022-09-29

At first it's just as fast as a normal 2.5 inch drive (~90MB/s). Once it gets pretty full you may get 1 MB/s speeds or less, your whole system/apps may start to lock up. OS cache was filled (2.6GB), it took almost an hour to shutdown because the cache needed to be flushed (containing random writes). You will probably just force shutdown because you don't know and lose data. Even deleting stuff can be painfully slow, hundreds of GBs taking 6 hours. It was deleting less than 1 empty folder per second. Listing a folder with a couple of items can take minutes if it's busy. You have to use discard/trim so that you can speed the drive back up (for newly written data) once clearing space from it. Trim after almost full (5TB) to almost empty took 45 minutes. Will not buy any SMR drive again. If the website doesn't mention SMR, it is reason enough to be able to return it. SMR drives are scam tier where you get 1% performance hidden away, in return you only save a couple of dollars.

Mine is formatted for Mac with one partition (3TB and 1TB). Can I change the partition size without affecting stored data?
Asked by: Bryan
If you are on a Mac, yes, you can do that within disk utility as of Mac OS Snow leopard. Keep in mind that while it is non-destructive, having a backup of your data is absolutely still recommended and this will only work with disks formatted with the GUID Partition Map.

question

Can you directly access files and documents that have been backed up without restoring the backed up file or document? If so, how?
Asked by: Anonymous
If the backup was created with the WD Utilities, you would need to use that software to recover the files. If you used alternate software you would need to review their documentation.
