I formerly stated that this flash isn't compatible with the EOS-R, since then I found I didn't have the flash and camera set up correctly . It IS fully compatible with the EOS-R Mt apologies for any confusion.

Get them while you can

B&H only ones that still have these tiny little Speedlites available new. Canon phasing out. Using a Canon RP mirrorless camera with three of these. And bounce cards with speedlight heads turned to spread to sides. 2 very lightweight and folding light stands. Camera mounted flash controls the other two. All fits in camera bag for onsite corporate portraits. For small office space, schools, board room lighting. Easy in, easy to set up, easy to exit again. Bit of an ultimate small factor portable studio lighting.

Wee flash for the win

My EOS R and R7 lack builtin flash so the EL-100 became my missing popup. Indeed it is small and light-pocket sized-but amazing powerful and well featured. External controls are spartan so this design depends on the camera's builtin flash menu for advanced features like triggering and second curtain flash. The power is sufficient to cover fill light duty, macro and small groups of people-all I need. The bounce features work great, just grab and turn or tilt (no lock button to press). I miss having the near IR AF assist light but, of course, such a feature doesn't work with mirrorless cameras. If you have a DSLR, a 430EX series flash would be a better choice if you need near IR AF assist.

Be sure to read the downloadable manual

Read the real manual that you need download. I'm not sure why Canon doesn't make a bigger deal of this little flash in the overview. If you have multiples of EL-100 flashes, you can do all sorts of creative lighting. This flash will run two groups where you can set the balance, i.e. left and right, as well as a background light. The main downside to the optical transmission is that the flashes need to have a direct line of sight to the main 'sender' flash unit on camera. That said, it wouldn't be much of an issue with telephoto lenses and portraits. In my initial testing, the 'receiver' flash was firing when the camera flash was nearly 90 degrees to the right. Of course, the little window on the flash is on the left. These would also be nice for setting up one or two 'receiver' flashes for bounce flashes in a bigger room. They will also do manual flash by pre setting the output levels. Anyways, read the complete manual before you purchase one, because you may want two or three of them. It would still be cheaper than other lighting options to get these effects.

I'm enamored with this thing. It works perfectly as a fill light for portraits. Additionally I can use it as a master for my other speed lites to use as bounce flashes, hair lights, etc. It is small and lightweight and does the job!

Not fully compatible with my EOS R due to lack of external controls. Works great with my 5DS.

Can you recommend a diffuser for this flash?
Asked by: Jose
WOW! I never thought about a diffuser for this Speedlite as it's very small. I bought it to have a small, lightweight flash to have available all the time on my EOS R. My 7D has a builtin flash that I use all the time. However, you might try one of the Vello or Sto-Fen light modifying products sold at B&H. Keep in mind that the EL-100 is very small.

I don't have a 6D however, I do have a mirrorless R and it does work with live view. So I would assume that it will work with the 6D.

Does any one know why the flash EL-100 shoots more than 200 on camera but off camera it doesn't?
Asked by: Mac
It could be that when its on the camera it has a direct light path to the subject when it is off the camera it could have a longer path to travel. On the other hand I think this a very simple flash that was designed to be an enhancement for use mainly on the camera has it has very few adjustments available for its use.

is the canon el-100 flash compatible with the canon rebel t8i ?
Asked by: Dan
I would presume that it would function fine. It is a dedicated Canon flash. It works very well on my 5D MkIII, 7D, EOS RP and G5X. I see no reason why it would not work on the Rebel T8i. If you have questions contact Canon tech services. I've found them to be very helpful.
