Manfrotto MT055XPRO3 Aluminum Tripod

The Manfrotto MT055XPRO3 Aluminum Tripod is a three-section support that replaces the 055XPROB tripod. It has a load capacity of 44 lb and extends from 3.5" to 67". Its legs are secured by the Quick Power Locks. These updated flip locks increase the tripod's rigidity by 50%, and its load capacity by 4.4 lb over its predecessor.

A redesigned center column has a "one finger" operation, and includes an Easy Link attachment for attaching accessories such as an LED light or a reflector. The center column can be positioned horizontally, allowing for low-angle and macro photography. The upper disc where a tripod head is mounted has been redesigned as well, and now has a bull's eye bubble level that rotates 360° so you can locate it where you can see it. This allows you to level your camera on both the horizontal and vertical planes.

MT055XPRO3 Aluminum Tripod and 494 Ball Head with 200PL-PRO Quick Release Plate Kit Reviews

Grudgingly updated my 1980s ART 055

I've been using a Manfrotto ART 055 since 1986 and every few years I have to replace one of the leg lever locks. Well, Manfrotto hasn't made these fittings for years, and now a replacement runs about $30 if you can find one. Reluctantly I purchased this tripod as a replacement, and the sting of the outlay is mitigated by how much better the new version is. It's lighter, the leg locks are stronger and quicker to deploy, the horizontal center post is brilliant, and the black color is much less reflective than the matte aluminum of the original.

Inspect the tripod for quality issues!

I'll share my experience to help everyone. Tripod suffers from quality issues as of April 2026. Be sure to check and inspect the full tripod when you buy it. I had to go through 2 tripods before receiving my 3rd tripod that was acceptable. My issues: 1) Tripod legs did not extended freely and easily when you open the leg locks (clamps). Upon closer inspection, one of the legs were slightly bent. Be sure to check the operation of all legs. 2) "Manfrotto" logo on one of the legs was scratched. 3) Excessive rattling sound inside one of the tripod legs. Sounds like a loose piece of metal inside the leg. Positives: 1) B&H was very good at sending replacement tripods. 2) The tripod itself is very good, robust, and functional. Just make sure you inspect for quality.

does this have a "leveler" showing a bubble in a liquid display, which if centered means the tripod is set up in a level position?
Asked by: Michael
The tripod itself has a leveling bubble that indicates when it is level. You don't need the ball head.

Would I be able to use a medium to large size gimbal head on this tripod?
Asked by: Ron
The Manfrotto MT055XPRO3 Aluminum Tripod has a maximum support weight of 19.8 lb. Technically, as long as the total weight you are putting on the tripod including the head, camera body and lens is no more than around 19 lbs it should be fine.

Is this tripod’s center post reversible to allow the camera to be positioned between the three legs of the tripod?
Asked by: Matt
This tripod has a center post that can be positioned at 90° relative to the chassis. To invert 180° however, is possible, though a very difficult, puzzle-like process. It involves removing the center column with a second press of the column pin, then making sure the red half-shell ( Manfrotto part R103973 ) is in the low position, next, reaching in the shell to keep the black pin ( Manfrotto part R103908 ) pressed in, and following through with the center column itself. It does not appear to be formally designed for inversion. Hope this helps.
