Apple MacBook Air Overview

  • 1Description

The Retina Display has found its way onto the late 2018 space gray Apple 13.3" MacBook Air.

With over 4 million pixels, the 13.3" Retina Display features a 2560 x 1600 screen resolution and a 16:10 aspect ratio for 227 pixels per inch (ppi). The display also features up to 48 percent more color than the previous generation. The display glass goes right to the edge of the screen for 50% less bezels.

The integrated Touch ID sensor allows you to unlock your MacBook Air with your fingerprint and authenticate your identity. You can also make secure online purchases with Apple Pay. Paired with the Apple T2 security chip, the T2's Security Enclave protects your Touch ID information and also ensures that software loaded during the boot process has not been tampered with. The T2 also features an SSD controller with on-the-fly data encryption for everything stored on the SSD for a secure boot process.

The keyboard utilizes Apple's butterfly mechanism for precise and responsive typing. Each key is individually backlit and works with an ambient light sensor for a more uniform illumination. You can also use the Force Touch trackpad, which is 20 percent larger than the previous generation, and has pressure-sensing capabilities as well as haptic feedback. The stereo speakers have also been improved to provide twice the bass and 25 percent more volume than the previous generation.

Featuring a significantly smaller footprint, the MacBook Air takes up 17 percent less volume, is 10 percent thinner measuring just 0.61 inches at its thickest point, and at just 2.75 pounds is a quarter pound lighter than the previous generation. Made from a custom Apple-designed aluminum alloy, the MacBook Air was created out of 100 percent recycled aluminum. This custom aluminum alloy helps reduce the MacBook Air's carbon footprint by nearly 50 percent.

The system is powered by an 8th Gen 1.6 GHz Intel Core i5 dual-core processor and has 8GB of onboard 2133 MHz LPDDR3 RAM and a 128GB PCIE-based SSD. Connect to the internet via Wi-Fi 5 (802.11ac) and use Bluetooth 4.2 to connect wirelessly to compatible peripherals and accessories. The dual Thunderbolt 3 ports provide high bandwidth of up to 40 Gb/s and the versatility of USB Type-C.

This Mac comes preloaded with macOS. Updates can be downloaded for free via the Mac App Store. Please check Apple's website for upgrade eligibility.

General Features

13.3" Retina IPS Display
With four times as many pixels as an HD display, the 13.3" Retina IPS Display provides up to 48 percent more color than the previous generation. The Retina Display has a 2560 x 1600 screen resolution and a 16:10 aspect ratio for 227 pixels per inch (ppi). The display glass goes right to the edge of the screen, making the bezels 50 percent thinner than before.
Touch ID
The advanced security and convenience of Touch ID is built into the MacBook Air. Simply place your finger on the integrated Touch ID sensor and your MacBook Air unlocks. Use your fingerprint to immediately access locked documents, notes, and system settings. You can also use Apple Pay securely during checkout while online shopping. No need to enter shipping or billing info, and your card details are never shared.
Apple T2 Security Chip
Introducing the Apple T2 chip, a second‑generation custom Mac silicon designed by Apple to make MacBook Air even more secure. The Apple T2 chip includes a Secure Enclave coprocessor that provides the foundation for secure boot and encrypted storage capabilities. It also consolidates many discrete controllers, including the system management controller, audio controller, and SSD controller, into one. And the Apple T2 chip brings a familiar voice to MacBook Air - Hey Siri is always ready to open apps, find documents, play music, or answer your questions.
Performance
The MacBook Air features an 8th Gen 1.6 GHz Intel Core i5 dual-core processor. It also has 8 of onboard 2133 MHz LPDDR3 RAM and a 128GB PCIe-based SSD.
Keyboard
The keyboard features the butterfly mechanism, which provides four times more key stability than a traditional scissor mechanism, and has greater comfort and responsiveness. And individual LED-backlit keys with an ambient light sensor help you type in low-light environments.
Force Touch Trackpad
The Force Touch trackpad lets you interact with your MacBook Air in a variety of ways based on subtle differences in pressure. You have precise control and a uniform response — no matter where you click the trackpad — as well as plenty of room for Multi-Touch gestures, like pinch and zoom.
Thunderbolt 3
Thunderbolt 3 is a hardware interface that utilizes the reversible USB Type-C connector. Doubling the speed of its predecessor, Thunderbolt 3 features a maximum throughput of 40 Gb/s when used with compatible devices. The connector also transmits data via USB 3.1 at up to 10 Gb/s, and dual-bandwidth DisplayPort 1.2 allows you to connect up to two 4K displays simultaneously. Additionally, you can daisy chain up to six devices from a single Thunderbolt 3 port.
Stereo Speakers
The improved stereo speakers features twice the bass with greater range and has 25 percent more volume than the previous generation. The wider stereo sound creates immersive audio when you're listening to music or watching a movie.
FaceTime HD Camera
The front-facing HD camera allows you to FaceTime with friends and family in HD quality for either one-on-one or group calls. The three integrated microphones form an array that can accurately capture your voice for FaceTime calls, as well as dictation and talking to Siri.
Materials
The MacBook Air is the first Mac to be made of 100% recycled aluminum. The aluminum alloy was created by Apple and it delivers the same strength, durability, and finish — without having to mine any new aluminum from the earth for up to 47% lower carbon emissions compared to the previous generation. It's designed to use shavings of recaptured aluminum that are re-engineered down to the atomic level.

    Apple MacBook Air Reviews

13.3" MacBook Air with Retina Display (Late 2018, Space Gray) is rated 4.7 out of 5 by 231.
Rated 5 out of 5 by from Does everything I want! I bought his MacBook Air to replace a 5 year old one, which gave me great service.  However, the new one is just so much more refined.   The sound system is VASTLY better and the images on the screen are much more vivid.  The keyboard and touch pad have a more refined feel.  Overall I am a happy camper with this purchase.  One irritation for me was that my remote backup hard drive had the older style thunderbolt port and cable that is not compatible with the 2 ports on the new MBA.  I had to go to the local Apple store to get a converter cable . . . before I could transfer my data from the old MBA to the new one.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Just an OK Upgrade.  Not Really Worth the Price I have a late 2012 MacBook Air and upgraded to this new computer so that I could give my daughter the old one for school.  Otherwise, I would have kept my 2012.  It worked just fine for my needs (basic web surfing, email and Powerpoint, Word and Excel work needs).   The new MB Air was quite a disappointment.  Its a little faster, it lasts a little longer and the screen is a little nicer, but given that its 5 years newer, it wasnt a huge improvement.   And Apple charges a stupid amount for extra storage that you can no longer upgrade (unlike my old MB Air).  Given all of the much better and cheaper options in the market, this will definitely be my last Apple computer.

Rated 2 out of 5 by from Beware Have USB-C hubs ready when you get it otherwise, nothing works.  No USB port.  Most all of your applications will not transfer from your older Air to this one.  So many privacy and security steps that prevent apps from being loaded and immense time going to other devises for the 2-factor authorization that hits you maybe 5 times trying to get things running.  And frankly, after all that, the primary difference is the smaller bezels.  I am not a power user, so my perspective may be different than others, and have every other Apple device you can buy, but this one is a disappointment and am returning it to B&H

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Great value Some limitations. Im very pleased by the overall performance of this entry-level 2018 MacBook Air.When it was first released,  I read all the major reviews closely so when B&H offered this basic model at a deep discount I knew it would meet my needs for a super-light, compact second computer to take to meetings and on short trips. The only drawback was the 32 gigs of storage -- quite an adjustment when youre spoiled by years of fully-loaded MacBook Pros. On the plus side, its forced me to learn the fine points of Microsoft Exchange and other cloud-based tools for conserving storage space. The retina screen and revamped keyboard are as good as the reviews say they are,

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Best Computer Ive Ever Had. Theres nothing I dont like about this computer. Before buying, I was a bit concerned about the keyboard, but I havent had any issues with it, and I think I might actually prefer it over the old style keyboard. The display is simply stunning-- a huge upgrade from my 2014 Air. I purchased a HDMI/USBC/USB dongle, which allows me to connect to my large monitor when I need more screen space, and it works perfectly. I highly recommend this computer.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from portable + powerful love this computer! I upgraded from the mid 2012 MBP (non-retina) and the difference is huge. The speakers are very loud but still sound great, and i have yet to hear the fan come on even when Im running many tabs in Firefox, as well as excel, word, acrobat, and messaging. The battery life is also wonderful, as are Touch ID login and the Force Touch trackpad. I was nervous about the keyboard, since I have heard complaints about it, but I found it comfortable and really easy to get used to. Overall, the computer is perfect for me. Great size and portability, as well as the processing power to get everything I need finished.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Great Lightroom machine, but two few ports Got this for our photo trips to replace a 2013 Macbook Pro that still works well, for two reasons:  1) needed more disk space & dont want to use an external drive (this one has 2TB vs .5TB on older Mac) 2) lighter weight, which can be an issue for cabin luggage on smaller aircraft in Africa and other places Display is beautiful, 2TB SSD is fantastic, and larger trackpad is easier than previous Macs.  Main complaint is lack of ports - just two USB-C ports, and one is needed for power.  We miss the SD port, but at least Apple has an SD adapter.  As of this writing B&H did not carry it but we were able to get one directly from Apple.  Now just have to figure out how not to lose the adapters we need to carry.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Nice but Not Real Nice The fingerprint unlock is awesome and it is definitely lighter. Love the looks as well. The screen does seem a bit darker than the 2014 MacBook Pro that this is replacing and not a fan of the clacky sound of the new keyboard. Performance is about the same as the 2014 model. Youd think there would be a big improvement from 4 years ago. Its nice laptop but expected more especially when giving up all the ports the 2014 model had.
