Manfrotto 190X Tripod with MVH500AH Video Hea... Overview

The Manfrotto 500 Fluid Video Head with 190X Video Aluminum Tripod & Leveling Column Kit includes a flat base fluid video head and a flat base 2-stage tripod with ball-leveling center column. The head features a wider-than-standard platform to provide better support for DSLRs, and it supports a maximum load capacity of 17.6 lb. A 500PLONG quick release plate is included, and the head's side lock mounting system enables the plate to click in from above, instead of aligning and sliding in from one end.

Fluid cartridges on both the pan and tilt axes provide resistance for smooth, controlled pan and tilt. The tilt range is -70° / +90° and the pan rotation is 360°. The spring-loaded counterbalance is preset at 5.3 lb. The camera plate has both 1/4"-20 and 3/8"-16 camera screws, and the head has a 3/8"-16 tripod mounting thread and a 3/8"-16 Easy Link connector for accessories such as a video monitor.

The 3-section tripod legs feature aluminum construction, and each leg extends in two stages. The built-in Quick Power Locks secure the legs at the length you select. The tripod legs are adjustable to a maximum height of just under 59" without extending the center column and feature a spreader-less design with each leg featuring four independent locking positions of 25, 46, 66, and 88°.

I purchased the tripod due to its size and ability to fit into an equipment case for traveling. The tripod works for interviews where the camera is locked, when the head is not being used for any pans or tilts. However, the big upset about this product/ model for me was, that the tripod broke just a few months in. The balancing mechanism that opens with a screw was jammed, and ever since it has been impossible to open it. I had to adjust the balance by adjusting the legs. Didn’t take me long to decide to leave the smaller tripod at home and bring my bigger Sachtler tripod. Today I contacted the servicing people for Manfrotto in Arizona and was told that the tripod is not under warranty if I have not signed up for extended warranty after the six month regular warranty period. I honestly did not think that I need to sign up for Warranty with this simple tripod, but now to my disadvantage, it will cost me possibly a lot to fix this tripod. As I mentioned before I hardly used the tripod and it was very unfortunate that it broke that quickly. Manfrotto does not convince me as a good brand.

The system I use is a fully rigged bmpcc 6k pro that comes out to nearly 17 pounds which is supposed to be above the head included with this system's weight capacity, however; after frequent use for the last couple months on outdoor commercial shoots the tripod works perfectly fine and seems to be relatively well balanced. The one problem that I see with this tripod is the leg locks that are a flimsy plastic instead of metal or some other stronger material which is a bit disappointing considering the price point.

The staff's answer seems to contradict the answer of April 18, 2017 to a similar question, where a staff member says you have to level [not by the column] " the old fashioned way, one leg at a time".
