Plustek A300 Plus Overview

From Manufacturer

The OpticBook A300 Plus flatbed scanner from Plustek is designed for high usage environments and is ideal for scanning book pages and other documents. With the A300 Plus you can scan an A3 sized page in less than 2.5 seconds, or a 200 page 8.5 x 11" book in approximately 20 minutes. Integrating mechanical, optical, and software technology to provide clear text and images within 2mm's of the book's spine, the scanner minimizes the spine shadow and distorted text associated with book scanning on flatbed scanners and eliminates the need to remove book pages from their bindings.

Users no longer have to damage bindings by pressing them flat or cutting pages to achieve a clean scan edge, making it an ideal scanning tool for students, schools, graphic designers, and any other work groups in need of scanning original binded documents. Additionally, this makes the A300 Plus ideal for library scanning as it allows books and texts to be efficiently digitized without unbinding, dismantling, and damaging them.

The included Book Pavilion Software streamlines book digitization processes, and allows pages to be automatically scanned and rotated at preset intervals, and user interaction via a PC screen is not required. The software automatically crops and rotates pages and will save to a variety of file formats including PDF, Searchable PDF, EPUB, BMP, JPEG, and TIFF.

Book Scanning
The OpticBook A300 Plus can scan books, binded texts, and A3-sized documents up to 12 x 17".
High Quality and High Speed
Scans an A3-sized image in less than 2.5 seconds at 600 dpi.
Scans Text Close to Book Spine
Integrated mechanical, optical, and software technology provides clear text and images within 2mm's of the book's spine. This minimizes the spine shadow and distorted text associated with book scanning on flatbed scanners and eliminates the need to remove book pages from their bindings.
One Touch Control
The buttons on the scanner's panel perform Book Pavilion, Preview, Color Scan, Grayscale Scan, and Text Scan functions. The settings for each are configured through Book Pavilion and offers quick access to the most frequently used scanning functions. This is especially useful when needing to repeatedly scan with the same settings and send images to the same destinations.
Productivity Software
With the included Plustek Book Pavilion software, images can be saved into a variety of formats such as BMP, JPEG, or TIFF. The software automatically rotates page images as consecutive pages are scanned, maintaining book layout and page sequence. The OpticBook A300 Plus also comes with image processing and document management software, including PDF conversion and Optical Character Recognition, which creates searchable scanned books.

Plustek A300 Plus Reviews

Good scanner, but software a little buggy

I needed a large-format scanner that would give me high-quality scans, produce individual scans quickly, be reasonably portable, and not cost several thousand dollars. I do not scan large volumes of material every day, but there are times when I need to copy research material off-site in considerable quantity in a brief time for analysis later. Time and dependability are of the essence. So far, the OpticBook A300 Plus has performed well except for one instance I will describe below. It is well built, although on mine, the receptable for one of the pegs that enables the cover to float on top of thick books is slightly misaligned and requires a tug to loosen the cover on that side. In my case, this has not proved to be a terrible shortcoming. I have used it on two different Win 10 machines, one a Dell tower that has a few years on it now and one a Lenovo laptop a little over a year old. Up to this point, most of my experience has been on the Dell. The first time I tried to scan with the software, the onboard buttons would not work. It would scan, but only if I was at the computer and manually clicked on the monitor-displayed scan button. After rebooting the computer and trying again, the scans worked as they should. I have had this problem recur at least one other time. The software is a little clunky and looks very dated. It clearly was designed a long time ago. For instance, if you must switch directories often, which I do, you must navigate the entire directory structure over again for each change; there is no way to directly type in where to save files. On the other hand, the options provided for different file types and destinations are excellent. The software provides for auto-cropping, so if your copy does not occupy the entire scan bed, the resulting image is supposed to match your original. I have found this approximates a decent crop most of the time, but occasionally the crop decision is quirky. For my needs, this is generally not an issue, but it bears scrutiny if you need precision cropping. When the software works well, it works very well. On the whole, however, I prefer the software design of the Epson scanners. I encountered a bizarre malfunction in which a scan could not be saved and the onboard buttons stopped functioning. The message indicated there was either a write error or the disk was out of space. The drive to which I was saving seemed to be in perfectly good order and showed no write problems, and it had many gigabytes of available space. I could not get the software to reset. I tried shutting down the scanner itself. When that didn't work, I then tried unplugging it and restarting it. I tried shutting down the application and restarting it. I tried using the software to reconfigure the scan. Restarting or completely shutting down the computer also did not fix the problem. Only by uninstalling and re-installing the software was the problem fixed. In any of the cases of malfunctioning, it seems the software is not good at recovering itself and a shutdown of the scanner and scanning software is required, at a minimum. I waffled between 3 and 4 stars for this. Since the problems were generally easy to fix, I would still probably recommend this scanner, especially for someone comfortable with tech, but be prepared to deal with some quirky issues.

Great book scanner

We are a small research library that occasionally needs to scan our books and articles for our digital collections. The scanning software has some oddities (I had to fiddle with some of the settings to see my preview and change other settings to prevent it from overwriting previous scans), but it worked great after I figured it out. 600dbi archival TIFFs in seconds! I called Plusteck to help with the settings and they were fantastic! Answered on the first ring and they were very helpful. Very little, if any, post-processing required. Relative to the amount it would cost to get our books professionally scanned and edited, this scanner is a steal.

Can this scanner also be used as a conventional flatbed scanner? is it a suitable replacement for my Epson 13 x 19 GT-15000 scanner?
Asked by: Paul
It doesn't have the ability to scan slides or negatives like other flatbed scanners and the max resolution is 600 DPI (600 DPI is sufficient for most typical scanning needs.) ' That said, the Plustek works like no other flatbed in scanning books and magazines. The design allows you to scan right to the edge of the front of the machine, allowing a clean scan into the gutter of bound materials.
