Viltrox EF-E II Overview

This 0.71x Lens Mount Adapter from Viltrox allows a full-frame Canon EF-mount lens to be mounted onto a Sony E-mount camera. While doing so, the adapter's optics help to maximize the connected lens's apparent angle of view while providing a one-stop increase for the camera over the lens's aperture range.

If a lens intended for 35mm film or similarly-sized full-frame camera sensors is connected to a Sony E-mount camera, it would project an image larger than the camera's APS-C sized sensor was built to accept. Able to capture only the center portion of the projected image, the effective angle of view of the lens would be narrowed, creating an in-camera "crop factor." This adapter condenses the light from a lens designed for 35mm film or "full frame" camera sensors and projects it onto a Sony E-mount camera's APS-C sensor. This allows the APS-C sensor to utilize more of the light gathered by a connected lens, which effectively reduces the crop factor while making available to the sensor an additional one stop of light for each of the lens's f/stop settings.

If a compatible lens includes autofocus, as well as camera-controlled aperture functions, this adapter is intended to allow those features to be used. Also, if an attached lens is capable of generating Exif metadata when used with a directly compatible camera, this adapter is designed to allow that information to be saved along with image files generated with a combination of the lens, a compatible Sony E-mount camera, and the adapter.

This adapter is constructed with four lens elements in four groups that are designed to provide optical clarity as well as color fidelity, and the underside of its detachable tripod foot is tapped with a 1/4"-20 accessory thread, enabling direct attachment to tripods or quick release plates that feature 1/4"-20 mounts. For ease of upgrading its firmware, this adapter also includes a micro-USB port.

For compatible Sony E-mount cameras that feature phase-detection and contrast-detection autofocus, a toggle switch to enable those autofocus settings with a connected Canon EF-mount lens is positioned along the side of this adapter. To properly apply a desired autofocus setting, the toggle switch selection must be made prior to placing the adapter on the camera.

This adapter is compatible with the Sony NEX-5C, C3, 5N, F3, 5R, 6, 7, FS700, VG20, and VG900 cameras.

  • Maximizes apparent angle of view of combined camera and lens
  • Provides a one-stop increase for the camera over the lens's aperture range
  • Four lens elements in four groups for optical clarity as well as color fidelity
  • Supports electronic communication between camera and lens to enable autofocus, on-camera aperture control, and Exif metadata generation when possible
  • Integrated toggle switch for a compatible Sony E-mount camera's phase-detection or contrast-detection autofocus setting to be applied with a connected lens
  • Detachable tripod foot with 1/4"-20 accessory thread for direct attachment to tripods or quick release plates that feature 1/4"-20 mounts

Viltrox EF-E II Reviews

Great buy

Excellent product. I started using with a 50mm EF lens I purchased with my M50 mark ii. The picture quality and the crisp of the resolution is optimal for my small rig. The adapter converts my m50 into a full frame camera at a cheaper price, with no much compromise in quality. :-)

Oh baby let's get weird with the bokeh!

If you want EF glass on your X mount camera then this will get the job done. However the bokeh does get a little swirly towards the edges and auto focus is a no. Personally I can and have been living with it but, to each their own.

Good, not great. Worth the price though.

Depending on focal length, some corner softness and vignetting, which was expected and actually a bit better than I anticipated given the price. Focus, even with latest firmware and despite the setting, is fine for single shot situations, but tracking and video is pretty worthless. It does allow me to use full frame lenses on my APS-C bodies though and the color rendition and added bokeh are good, so for casual shooting or stationary video subjects, this is nice to have in the kit.

Buying my Viltrox Focal Reducer was my first B&H in-store experience. WOW! What a pleasure! Five stars! The Viltrox EF-EOS M2 itself: I wanted an adapting focal reducer to use quality vintage primes on my Canon M50. There are two main brand choices: Metabones (metal housing); Viltrox (plastic housing). For use with vintage glass, electronic connections are moot. I tried both products at the B&H counter and saw no difference between them, and I was not price sensitive. In subsequent video shoots, I have noticed no loss of sharpness or increase in noise when pixel peeping in Resolve. Both competitors are made in China. What chance is there that either Metabones or Viltrox own a glass factory? They are buying in the lens component, probably from the same supplier. Unless you require a metal housing (I do not), you will be completely satisfied with the Viltrox. I am.

Hello, is this speedbooster EF-E II compatible with the Canon (manual focus) TS-E 17mm F/4 lens (tilt shift lens), on a Sony APSC camera? Thanks
Asked by: Vladimir
The Viltrox EF-E II 0.71x Lens Mount Adapter for Canon EF-Mount Lens to Select Sony E-Mount Cameras would allow you to mount the Canon TS-E 17mm f/4L Tilt-Shift Lens onto a Sony E-mount camera. However, due to the ability of the lens to shift and rotate, we cannot guarantee that your particular camera will have enough clearance for the movements of the tilt-shift lens, and we do not have the ability to test each lens on each camera for full usage. As such, if the lens mount adapter does not work as needed for your planned usage, do note the lens mount adapter may be returned within 30 days of the original purchase date for an exchange or refund.

Can this help with the crop effect created by the sigma DC 30mm f1.4 contemporary lens for the canon m50? Will this speedboster be compatible with those lens mounts?
Asked by: Josean
The Sigma 30mm is a DC lens so it was made for the crop sensors in the M50. Using a booster would cause vignetting on a Sigma DC lens.
