Sony E PZ 18-105mm f/4 G OSS Overview

  • 1Description

Complementing the lens itself, the Sony E PZ 18-105mm f/4 G OSS Lens with Circular Polarizer Filter Kit from B&H bundles the versatile wide-to-tele zoom with a 72mm circular polarizer filter.

  • Sony E PZ 18-105mm f/4 G OSS Lens

Have all the essential focal lengths covered with this E PZ 18-105mm f/4 G OSS Lens from Sony. Designed for APS-C-format E-mount cameras, this lens offers an extremely versatile 27-157.5mm zoom range and has a constant f/4 aperture for consistency through all focal lengths. Making this lens a great choice for both stills and video is the implementation of a power zoom mechanism and Handycam technology that provides smooth, quiet zooming and focusing. Also, it uses two extra-low dispersion elements and three aspherical elements to combat aberrations for crisp, clean images.

On top of these features, the lens is equipped with Optical SteadyShot image stabilization to help reduce the effects of camera shake, especially at longer focal lengths. The lens benefits from an internal focus design that ensures that the overall length of the lens does not change during focusing. Additionally, it offers a minimum focus distance of 1.5' and uses a seven-blade circular diaphragm for smooth bokeh.

A versatile mid-range zoom for APS-C-format E-mount cameras, this 18-105mm lens provides a wide-angle to short telephoto 27-157.5mm equivalent focal length that works for anything from vast landscapes to tight portraits to distant subjects.
A constant f/4 maximum aperture offers consistent performance throughout the zoom range and also lends greater control over focus position for shallow depth of field techniques.
Two extra-low dispersion glass elements are featured in the lens design to help reduce chromatic aberrations and color fringing for improved clarity and color neutrality.
Three aspherical elements, including one Advanced Aspherical (AA), are incorporated in the lens design to reduce astigmatism, field curvature, coma, and other monochromatic aberrations.
Optical SteadyShot image stabilization helps to minimize the appearance of camera shake for sharper imagery when shooting handheld with slower shutter speeds. This stabilization system can also be combined with select camera's sensor-shift type image stabilization for more effective control of camera blur.
Enjoy smooth zooms ideal for shooting movies with the power zoom mechanism which uses Handycam technology from Sony's well-regarded camcorders.
An internal focus design contributes to fast autofocus speeds and the minimum focus distance of 1.5' and easier handling as the lens maintains its overall length.
Rounded seven-blade diaphragm contributes to a pleasing bokeh quality when employing selective focus techniques.

  • Hoya 72mm NXT Plus Circular Polarizer Filter

The 72mm NXT Plus Circular Polarizer Filter helps to reduce reflections and glare by filtering out light that has become polarized due to reflection from a non-metallic surface. The light from the sun naturally becomes partially polarized due to reflecting off electrons in air molecules, causing the light to scatter into what appears as haze. A polarizing filter arranges and filters this directionally polarized light perpendicularly to the reflected light, allowing for the absorption of much of this light. This results in a noticeable reduction of glare and reflections from non-metallic surfaces and an increase in the saturation of skies and foliage.

A circular polarizer only differs from a linear polarizer in that it contains a quarter wave plane in addition to the linear polarizing filter. The addition of this quarter wave plane is to circularly polarize the linearly polarized light for the use of auto focus and exposure functions. Due to how the light is broken down and filtered with a linear polarizer, auto focus and exposure accuracy become skewed during use. When the light becomes circularly polarized, it permits the use of these functions.

This filter is constructed from optical glass for clarity as well as color fidelity and features an aluminum-alloy filter ring that can be rotated in order to adjust the intensity of the polarization effect. To prevent internal ghosting and reflections, each glass surface includes five layers of anti-reflection coating. An additional hydrophobic coating results in an improved beading effect when in contact with water for greater cleaning efficiency.

Helps to reduce reflections and glare by filtering out light that has become polarized due to reflection from a non-metallic surface.
Polarizing filters arrange, and filter, directionally polarized light perpendicularly to the reflected light, allowing for the absorption of much of the light.
Clears up haze in distant landscapes and provides more saturated, vivid colors.
Strongest effect when used at a 90° angle from the sun.
Circular polarizers are ideal for use with digital cameras and autofocus lenses where a linear polarizer will often disrupt auto exposure and focus features.
1.7x filter factor reduces exposure by 0.8 stop.
Multicoated to prevent internal ghosting and reflections while providing an improved beading effect with water for more efficient cleaning.
Aluminum-alloy filter ring for durability while remaining lightweight.
Filter ring can be rotated to adjust the intensity of the polarization effect.
72mm front filter threads allow for use with other filters.
Top knurling to provide a more textured grip when mounting or removing it from a lens.
Constructed from optical glass for clarity and color fidelity.
Plastic filter case for storage and transport.

Sony E PZ 18-105mm f/4 G OSS Reviews

E PZ 18-105mm f/4 G OSS Lens with Circular Polarizer Filter Kit is rated 4.5 out of 5 by 227.
Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great one lens solution for a6xxx series I was unsure if I wanted to carry a bigger lens (than the 16-50mm) but once I got it I was surprised it was not very heavy and not as large as I assumed it would be. The range is great for a single lens solution and I am pleased with the additional contrast that the 16-50mmm just does not have. The colors just pop more and it is on par with the 24-105 Canon when I used Canon gear propr. The build quality is very good and can carry this all day without weight issues. I use this lens mainly for pictures, but when I use it for video, the power zoom and range makes this a great lens for a day out photographing.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Love this Lens! (18105 F4 G OSS) Love this lens! I bought it to go with my A6000 and so far (a couple of months) I havent taken it off. The lens is so versatile and lightweight that I take it with me nearly everwhere I go. I love it for indoor portraits as well as landscape, beach shots, you name it! You really only need to consider all of the initials in the name G, OSS to realize that at this price point you are getting a bargain. I have had less PP work to do with this combo then I do with my A7r and 55mm F1.8! Most of the time photos taken in RAW are looking crisp and beautiful straight out of the camera!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Terrific Travel Lens Although I use the lens for portraits, food, street photography, and architecture, my main reason for buying it was for travel. On a cruise last year, I carried my Nikon D610 with the 28x300mm lens. I was thrilled with the pictures from the Nikon, but the weight of the camera and lens bore down on my neck. For a backup camera and for my trips, I purchased the Sony A6000 with the kit lens. The Sony and the new lens will be much easier to carry. I'm very pleased with the quality and the build of the 18-105. Since I use the A6000 for occasional videos, I appreciate the smooth power zoom. For me, it's a perfect complement to the Nikon. I love them both!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from excellent all round lens Excellent all round lens. It increases your photographic possibilities of capturing landscapes, details, and even portraits. Its size makes them suitable for the Sony's A6000 series. You can also manually adjust the focus. The zoom speed may seem a bit slow for some (maybe it could have speed adjustments), but it suits most scenes, even with moving subjects, and practically soundless. The optical quality seems good enough to project on screens of 2x3 meters, and for printed enlargements of 1m2 (all without post processing of any kind). Optical and chromatic aberrations are no greater than any semiprofessional lens or even some lenses 3 times their price.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from One slick lens Most useful: Everything except macro. Most unique: Internal zooming (and focus) so dusty air is not pumped into lens and camera. This may be the first review of this lens to appear online. Received lens one week ago and have put it through its paces on a Nex 7, shooting RAW and processing in Lr5. Images are crisp and well contrasted. Auto focus is instantaneous and silent. Zooming is quick by either twisting the zoom ring or with the motorized drive. Focus and exposure, and hence image in viewfinder, remain stable during zoom. When using a circular polarizer stacked atop a UV filter, and at wide angle focal length, there is slight vignetting, but not with but one filter.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Decent Lens for the Money I own a 5D Mark II as my primary camera and a a6300 as a secondary camera. As a Canon user, I've become accustomed to the quality of their L-series lenses. This Sony lens is pretty good, but it doesn't compare to a Canon lens costing twice as much, obviously. I have found it to be a good lens to use while on vacation, as it covers wide to telephoto really well. The bokeh it produces is pleasant to the eye too. It has definite positives, so it's a good purchase, as long as you understand the image quality isn't going to compare favorably against much more expensive lenses.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Very Good Zoom! Purchased for two reasons. To improve the quality I was getting from the kit zoom and to have a single go-to lens. The SELP18105G did not disappoint. *AF is quick *The lens is very sharp with some softening towards the edge. Those that want even sharper images should look at primes. There will always be trade off for the convenience of carrying one lens. *Though it is large, it is light and since zooming is internal, it never becomes unwieldy. Many mention the distortion, but it is corrected in camera or in post with lens profile; not an issue on NEX cameras. People complain about what it isn't, instead of looking at what it is. It is a constant f/4 6X Zoom. It has fast AF (for a em-mount). It is relatively inexpensive with very good optics and excellent build quality.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Not good on the FS5 Hamid and Old Pro are right. Manual focus control is terrible, when trying to make minute adjustments the lens is liable to jump way out of focus when on the long end of the lens. Even worse, if you zoom in, focus and zoom out quickly the focus may jump out of focus, sometimes way out of focus. If you start to zoom back in it will grab focus. Quick zooms out cause unpredictable loss of focus, zooms in do not have the same problem. Try it yourself, using f4 zoom in tight on a focus chart. Then do a series of short zooms out. Use the focus magnifier to see the loss of focus. The error is not repeatable, different every time.

will this work on a 7A?

will this work on a 7A?
Asked by: david
If you are referring to the Sony A7, while the lens will fit on the camera this is an APS-C only lens. It will not cover the full frame of the Sony A7. You would have to shoot in an APS-C mode with the camera to use this lens.

question

I read some comment that this len has some issues: 1) it doesn't support the Phase Detection AF in NEX 6, is this true? I will be getting SONY a6000, does this len support the fast phase detection and eye AF in a6000? 2) heavy pincushion distortion from 30mm and above, has this been resolved ?
Asked by: Anonymous
With the latest firmware installed, the 18-105mm does support hybrid phase detection AF.

We are not sure what you are asking. If you are asking can the lens mount be replaced if damaged, that would be a determination by a service center.

question

my 16-50 lenses has 4x digital zoom capability effectively taking it to 200 with some noise. does the 18-105 lenses have a digital zoom capability also?
Asked by: Matt S.
No it does not. It has a constant F4 aperture from 18 to 105mm. Digital zooming is usually accomplished in camera with fixed lenses. The 18 to 105 is a removable lens. I am using mine on a Sony A6000 ASPC interchangeable lens camera.
