Z CAM E2-F6 EF Mount Overview

Shoot professional high-definition cinema footage with the Z CAM E2-F6 Full-Frame 6K Cinema Camera with a Canon EF lens mount. The camera features a full-frame sensor with 10-bit 4:2:2 color support and nominal 15 stops of dynamic range, supports timecode, shoots up to 6K at up to 60 fps and 120 fps at 4K, and records data up to 300 Mb/s onto CFast 2.0 media.

Supported recording formats include MOV and MP4 using H.265 for 10-bit recording, and H.264 which supports 8-bit recording. Its HDMI 2.0 port supports 4K60, 10-bit 4:2:2 video output. Audio is recorded in 24-bit 48 kHz using AAC or PCM (PCM for MOV format only) through its 3.5mm stereo jack or via a separately available XLR connector using its 5-pin LEMO port.

The E2-F6 can be controlled via serial ports, a 2.5mm LANC connector, a USB-C port, an Ethernet port, or by the Z Camera iOS app to control the camera via Wi-Fi and to view a live image preview and to configure settings. The camera can record time-lapse and slow motion, and it can even live stream via its Gigabit Ethernet port. You can also control it locally by the buttons along the side of the camera.

The E2-F6 can be powered by a separately available battery using the built-in L-series battery mount, or you can power the camera using a separately available power adapter using its 2-pin LEMO port. The camera also features a 12 VDC 2-pin LEMO power output to provide power to separately available accessories.

Z CAM E2-F6 EF Mount Reviews

A fabulous work horse

I've used the F6 for 3 years now, and for all that many other cameras have likely overtaken it now on certain specs, it's still the camera I use the most. The image quality is really special, particularly when you learn how to grade it in Resolve: don't take the results of recent camera tests on YouTube with a rec709 lut applied at face value, zlog2 can be graded to look amazing when you know how. On shoots where I've been alongside other high end camera ops, the footage has stood out. Clients consistently tell me the quality is incredible. The form factor is excellent, particularly when used with a RVLVR Clutch handle and eND, and you can rig it up or down easily. At its most basic you can run it with a handle and a mobile phone as a monitor, and you're good to go. I shoot a lot in the freezing snow, and in these conditions the F6 is SO much easier to operate than a mirrorless, or camera covered in tiny buttons. It's power-efficient and thermally efficient too. I've shot in up to 39C without any problems. It's been up and down mountains, racing down ski runs, filmed top ski racers and never missed a beat. You can use it with anything from a tiny NPF to a big V mount, using the excellent Nitze QR system. The variety of resolutions and frame rates is superb, with so many options for anamorphic (it even has vertical desqueeze). If you like to do step printing, it's a breeze. Rolling shutter is its achilles heel, but if you're careful handling the camera, it's really not noticeable. There's a 4k lo-jello mode for those times where you need to make sure rolling shutter is at a minimum. Go with Exascend Cfast cards, the only ones recommended. I haven't had any problems over all the time I've used these. For grading, sure, Resolve doesn't have built in profiles for Z-Cam, but there's a lot of great content available on YouTube on how to grade zlog2. I now find using my Powergrades, I can get a better image more quickly than I can with other cams I have, like the S5iix and R5C. I use the S5iix as a B cam with the F6, but the image coming out of the F6 is significantly nicer IMO. And the S5iix is already excellent, technically having more DR than the F6. But that's where stats can be misleading. You can get Open Gate BRaw with a Video Assist, perfect for high quality anamorphic footage. Or ProRes Raw with a Ninja, which looks really special, though it adds an extra step for grading if you use Resolve. On a spec list you may find other cameras that seem better on paper, but all cameras compromise somewhere, and for me in terms of overall usability, the F6 still goes with me the most. If the long-awaited box camera that came out recently were a bit more like the F6 I'd probably go for one. But it isn't, so I probably won't ;-)

Best Full Frame Camera "for the price"

There are so many good things to say about this camera that others have already said so I won't bore you with the great image quality, great size, etc. I only have two gripes and these complaints may or may not have anything to do with Z CAM. 1) ZRAW support. I want to use ZRAW. I think everyone does. But we need native support in all the major NLEs. No "I think" this is a two-fold problem with Z CAM and NLEs. Z CAMs relationship with ATOMOS and ProRes RAW is in direct conflict with ZRAW. This is a problem. And a problem that doesn't have a solution because ProRes RAW is also not supported in all the major NLEs. No one, and I mean no one, would choose external RAW recording over internal RAW recording. No one. So partly Z CAMs fault and partly the NLEs fault. I get that companies, especially small ones, need to make money forming partnerships like these (ATOMOS) but it hurts the consumer in the end. 2) Super 35mm crop options. Most other Full Frame cameras have super 35mm crop options for use with super 35mm lenses. The F6 does sort-of?? It's not clear. There's nothing in the manual about it. It doesn't work in the anamorphic options (ProRes). It's a problem that could be solved in a firmware update, but it is not solved yet.

will this have an anamorphic mode - if so - what will the resolution be after 2.40 desqueeze?
Asked by: chris
The resolution after desqueeze will be the same as before desqueeze. The pixels get stretched. You desqueeze in premiere, after recording, not in-camera. I don't know of any camera that desqueezes the recorded image beyond a metadata flag. For display, you can desqueeze the display with whatever monitor you want to use with the camera. Most modern smallHD's offer desqueeze functionality. Also, what lens do you have that squeezes the frame by 2.4x? Most anamorphic lenses squeeze in the range between 1.3x -2x.

So it won't shoot 24fps?
Asked by: Stephen
The various resolutions listed show the frame rate it will record up to, not the specific frame rates for each resolution. While 24fps is not listed specifically this camera should offer that frame rate for most resolutions.

Can I use the LCD on top of the zcam e2 f6 to quickly confirm a shot comp (not using to pull focus, but just to have an overall impression of the shot comp...Could I pull focus on a ninja v, turn it off, and occasionally glance at the top screen of the zcam to make sure I'm still rolling, etc.? and does the topscreen allow for playback of clips? ...definitely would use this camera with a ninja V, but would prefer to not have it running the whole time once focus is pulled, bcoz of the fan noise/battery drain of the ninja v.
Asked by: Kevin
The LCD on top of the camera will allow you to view playback and a live view of what the camera is capturing, but it is a rather small screen so it may make sense to use an external monitor for more accurate operation.
