The Edifier R1280T 2-Way Powered Bookshelf Speakers (Wood, Pair) is a stereo system. Both the left and the right channel connect to the right speaker and the right speaker has a speaker output, to send the left channel audio and power out to the left speaker.

Can the source (Aux 1, Aux 2) be switched from the speaker controls, or does that need to be done from the remote?
The Edifier R1280T 2-Way Active Bookshelf Speakers (Wood, Pair) B&H # EDR1280T does not actually have device selection. If two audio sources are connected simultaneously, both signals will play. To dedicate audio output from one source, decrease the volume or power off the unselected device.

If they're powered, how do they perform when hooked to a receiver? Is that possible?
You can't hook it to a receiver because it has an amp as one of it's functions. You can hook up a tuner to it, or another source component such as a CD player.
