Ricoh GR III Digital Camera

The long-awaited installment in the popular series of fast, compact cameras, the Ricoh GR III continues the legacy of being a pocketable powerhouse, offering impressive image quality, fast response, and immense portability. Featuring a redeveloped imaging feature-set, the GR III incorporates a 24.2MP APS-C CMOS sensor and GR Engine 6 to realize smooth tonality, rich color and high sensitivity from ISO 100-102400, along with the ability to produce high-resolution 14-bit DNG stills or Full HD video. Complementing the sensor design is an 18.3mm, f/2.8 prime lens, which has a 35mm-equivalent focal length of 28mm. Additionally, a first for GR, a 3-axis Shake Reduction System compensates for the effects of camera shake to help render sharper handheld shots when working with slower shutter speeds.

Physically, the GR III looks familiarly compact, but incorporates a redesigned control scheme to promote a larger, more comfortable grip while maintaining easy access to physical controls. A 3.0" 1.037m-dot LCD is used for image composition, playback, and menu navigation, and its touchscreen design offers intuitive control along with Touch AF capabilities. Additionally, built-in Bluetooth LE and Wi-Fi can be used to pair with a mobile device for quick, wireless transferring of files to your smartphone or tablet.

24.2MP APS-C CMOS Sensor and GR Engine 6
Featuring an updated design, a 24.2MP APS-C CMOS sensor pairs with a new GR Engine 6 to produce high-resolution 14-bit DNG or JPEG stills with impressive tonality, natural color rendering, and high sensitivity from ISO 100-102400. In addition to full-resolution, wide-angle images, a pair of useful crop modes—35mm at 15MP and 50mm at 7MP—let you simulate the look of working with longer focal lengths.

In addition to stills shooting, the GR III is also capable of recording Full HD 1080 video at 60p, 30p, and 24p frame rates.
Prime Wide-Angle Lens
A fixed prime 18.3mm lens offers a comfortable 28mm equivalent wide-angle lens, which is complemented by a bright f/2.8 maximum aperture to suit working in a variety of lighting conditions. The optical construction incorporates six elements in four groups, including two aspherical elements that help to reduce spherical aberrations and distortion for improved sharpness and accurate rendering. Two focusing modes also suit working with general subjects, from 3.9" to infinity, while a dedicated macro setting benefits working with close-up subjects within a 2.4-4.7" range. An internal two stop-effective (ND 0.6) filter is also available for either slowing the shutter speed or permitting working with a wider aperture setting, and the lens has a nine-blade diaphragm to contribute to a smooth bokeh quality. Additionally, the redeveloped lens design also results in greater contrast and measures 1.5mm thinner than previous GR/GR II digital cameras.
Shake Reduction System
Featured for the first time in a GR camera, a 3-axis Shake Reduction System helps to minimize the appearance of camera shake in order to promote sharper handheld shooting at slower shutter speeds. The Shake Reduction System has been optimized for use with the built-in 28mm-equivalent lens, which renders it smaller and more effective. Additionally, the SR unit also offers moiré reduction and dust removal capabilities.
Body Design
  • The hallmark feature of the GR-series has been its compact, pocketable size while still retaining a large image sensor and bright prime lens.
  • Integrated 3.0" 1.037m-dot LCD features a capacitive touchscreen design for intuitive, familiar operation during shooting, playback, and menu navigation.
  • The rear layout of the camera has been completely redesigned and prioritizes a larger, more comfortable thumb grip along with easily accessible physical dials. Additionally, the ADJ lever, FN button, and Touch AF operations can be programmed to handle specific assignable functions for more personalized control.
  • Start-up time has been reduced to 0.8 sec and Hybrid AF performance has been quickened for more seamless operation.
  • Integrated Bluetooth LE and Wi-Fi afford wireless connectivity between the camera and a paired mobile device, and allows you to embed location info within your files as well as transfer files to your mobile device, even when the camera is turned off.
  • Included DB-110 rechargeable lithium-ion battery offers approximately 200 shots per charge.
  • USB Type-C port allows you to transfer files or recharge the battery in-camera.

Designed for SD devices that can capture Full HD, 3D, and 4K video, as well as raw and burst photography, the 64GB Extreme PRO UHS-I SDXC Memory Card from SanDisk has a capacity of 64GB, is compatible with the UHS-I bus, and features a speed class rating of V30, which guarantees minimum write speeds of 30 MB/s. Ricoh GR III Reviews

Convenient Pocket Camera

By Yifan

The Ricoh GRiii is really good for street photography. Lens is super sharp. I would really recommend the positive film simulation. A downside is that the sensor does struggle in low light so pictures are noisy and I miss focus. Keep that in mind if you're in the market for a pocket camera.

Near perfect Point & Shoot

The near perfect GR III is most likely the best over all P&S camera on the market currently. From its small size to snappy operation, it's high quality lens for extremely sharp photos, to its baked in JPEG recipes, the GR is your best bet for hitting the street or whatever you find yourself wanting to photograph. I highly recommend this beast of a camera. A few features would bring this camera to the tip top like a flip up screen and better battery life and not to mention the fact that this camera isn't weather sealed. At its price point be sure you understand what it is you need or are getting yourself into. Because of its fixed lens focal it leads to many adventure rather than just walk up and zoom.

My Little Joy

I carry the GRIII + extra battery in a belt pouch. Interesting photo opportunities appear daily, if you look, and with the RAW file I can go to Lightroom and get spectacular results. Can't do that with iPhone. Super sharp, unobtrusive (I can pull it out in public spaces and people don't get freaked out). It has been to many countries, beaches, mountains, hiking in the rain, dropped several times (in the belt pouch), and it survives. The pouch also protects against dust. No, it won't perform on the par with a bigger camera, but my bigger camera almost never goes out of the house, or on trips. This one is always there. And if I prop it on a rock, or against a tree, the IS even permits long exposures of moving water (example photo attached, camera propped up on my fist resting on a branch). True, absent a tripod I need to take the shot a couple of times, but when a photo presents itself, this little camera can do an amazing job if you know what you're doing. I really do have tons of beautiful photos, all because the GR goes with me, and most places I can use it almost unnoticed. I always shoot RAW.

Great camera for travel

I have multiple pro-Nikon cameras and lenses for my work, but it's really a pain to bring them on some vacations. This camera is great for snapping pictures on a trip. You can actually stick it in a pocket or small bag and carry it around. It's got a huge sensor for the size, I'm not quite sure how they squeeze that in. It's much better quality than a phone camera, but so much smaller than a DSLR. The only disadvantage is the video features are pretty poor.

My primary street setup, love the extremely small form factor, that makes a huge difference where I shoot.

The best cam for travel and street

By Aristoteles
Rated 5 out of 5
Date: 2023-02-10

I recommend 100% this camera for travel and street photography. The convenience that the small size of the camera brings has no parallels. I would say that this is the ideal camera for 'prosumers' that want to have a reliable camera ready to shoot at anytime. Not recommended for professional photographers or youtubers.

'Unable to store image'

By David

Normally a Nikon D750 user, but I wanted an everyday carry camera. I formatted the memory card in camera, shooting RAW+ file sizes, but right off the bat I receive the error 'Unable to store image' then the camera powers off. I think I need to return before my 30 day return window closes. Totally unacceptable. Camera shouldn't have these problems out of the box.

Seems like a well thought out and well engineered camera. Only quirks I know are heating up in heavy use, and a lens sticking thing they address in the troubleshooting section of the manual. Basically refined and smooth and dependable.

The GR II had a maximum (longest) shutter speed of 8 seconds in Aperture Priority mode (and probably in other modes). Longer requires use of Manual mode. Does the GR III have this same limitation?

When the Ricoh GR III Street Edition Digital Camera is in time mode, you can set it so the shutter stays open for 20 minutes. In bulb mode, the shutter will remain open as long as you hold the shutter button down.

Thinking about Ricoh for family/casual photos, 1. Has the AF got any better since launch? 2. Is video total garbage for casual use? Shooting kids/family, is that doable with this camera? Want something super pocketable for capture memories (not streets). Thoughts?
Asked by: Anish
The Ricoh GR III Digital Camera autofocus is very good. And as for a pocket camera to take with you I feel a good one. Note the lens is a fixed 28mm lens, very sharp but not a zoom. So, if you do want to take shots that are further away that might not be best for you.
