More Details

Savage 46 Tech Green Overview

Photograph people and products against a smooth, uncluttered background with this 86" x 18' roll of #46 Tech Green Seamless Background Paper from Savage. To facilitate even lighting, the surface of the paper is non-reflective and has a fine-tooth finish. In addition to photography, the paper may be used for events, decorations, banners, and more.

The paper density is 145 gsm and it has an easy-to-handle resilient thickness. For mounting on many standard background stands, it comes wound on a core with a 2.125" interior diameter. A plastic sleeve protects the roll in transit and can be saved to provide continued protection when the paper is not in use. The paper should be stored vertically to reduce the possibility of warping and other damage. Photographers often use clamps to secure the paper to a backdrop stand as well as tape to secure the paper to the floor if rolled out for full-body shots. The paper is lignin- and acid-free, pH neutral, and 100% recyclable.
Designed for Chroma Keying
If you want to create a green or blue screen you will want #46 Tech Green or #58 Studio Blue, respectively. Both of these colors are optimized for chroma key work. Using paper makes it easy to ensure a clean background for smooth post-production workflows.
Choosing the Right Width
When purchasing a roll of background paper, you will need to determine the best size for your subject and space. Most colors are available in a range of widths and lengths though staples, like black and white, are available in even more options. Here is a general guide to choosing the right size:
  • 26" - This compact size can be used for smaller subjects, such as tabletop product photography or portraits of children. It can also be used for tight headshots with careful framing.
  • 53" - A medium size, this is suitable for up to full-length portraits of a single individual and larger objects.
  • 86" - Create images with multiple people (up to three) or very large objects.
  • 107" - The largest option for many colors, this width is great for group portraits or families with room for around four people or very large objects.
  • 140" - Available for #01 Super White, #20 Black, #46 Tech Green, and #70 Storm Gray, the largest size can fit up to six people at a time for larger group photos and can be used with very large objects.
Depending on your own space and capabilities, you should consider your paper size carefully. Wider and longer rolls are heavier and can be more difficult to work with though they bring advantages to ensuring a filled background.

Savage 46 Tech Green Reviews

It's paper. It's green. It's pretty heavy weight

For green paper, this is paper and it's green. It's pretty heavy weight - much thicker and it probably be more like thin card. That means it will probably hold up, but it also makes it quite a bit harder to fit around things, so you may want to consider cloth depending on purpose. It was a job to fold it around the ledge of easel I was using for a stand for photographing books. It worked fine, I just would have been happier if it was a touch easier. Still, I'll take durability over a little bit extra work.

Is there a safe way to mount this permanently on the wall without stands? Looking at options like the Manfrotto 059WM?
Asked by: Blake
If using the Manfrotto 059WM Hooks fastened to the studs of your drywall or concrete wall, it is recommended to use the Manfrotto 047-3 Alu-Core for Uncored Paper or Cloth - 12' (3.6 m), BH # MA0473 in place of the cardboard core then a Manfrotto 046MCB Expan Drive Set with Black Metal Chain, BH #MA046MCB inserted on each end of the paper in order to attach the roll to the hooks. https://bhpho.to/3R995G3 https://bhpho.to/3XGiOpv

Does anyone know which is a better support system for the 107" paper? Savage or Westcott?
Asked by: Max
If you happen to be comparing the Savage 12 x 12' Background Stand, B&H # SA601212, to the Westcott Background Support System (10.5' Width), B&H # WEBK, both background support systems would be compatible for use with the Savage Widetone Seamless Background Paper (#46 Tech Green, 107" x 36'), B&H # SABGP10746, but the Westcott background support system would be the stronger of the two items. The Westcott background support system has a maximum load capacity of 40 lb (18.1 kg), whereas the Savage background support system has a maximum load capacity of 20 lb (9.1 kg).

question

Does this paper work well for green screen? It looks a bit dull to be chroma key.
Asked by: Joey
We use the chroma green paper for our students shooting green screen work. The trick to keying is getting even, quality light on the green screen for keying. Any shadows or gradation of light makes the job more difficult. Hope this helps.
