FLM CP30-S4 II Reviews
Lightweight Tripod Myth-Buster
For years, operating under the mantra that "there's no such thing as a sturdy, lightweight tripod", I've carried a big Gitzo with a RRS BH-55 ball head around, taking mostly nature macro with some landscapes and wildlife. A great camera support system for sure, but I'm not getting any younger and was looking to lighten the load a bit. The FLM CP30-S4II is exactly what I was looking for! I really don't care how high the tripod can go, although I've used the FLM fully extended just fine. Being a macro photographer, I like how the legs can spread out to ground level like my old Gitzo. I've combined this tripod with a RRS BH-40 ball head and have been completely satisfied with the results. It easily handles my Z8 with a heavy 100-400mm lens beautifully. The weight reduction on hikes through the woods has been noticeable and greatly appreciated. (BTW, I don't think I saw the RRS BH-40 listed as a compatible head for this tripod, but it works really well with it!)
Disappointed
I liked the tripod for a couple of years, but over time, I started experiencing recurring issues with the legs getting stuck, making it difficult to extend or retract them occasionally. On a few occasions, this even caused me to miss shooting opportunities. When I reached out to customer service, they recommended using WD-40 for lubrication. I tried it, but it only made a slight improvement. I purchased mine in 2022, so I wonder if this issue is specific to that production batch. I’m not sure. For reference, I’m a very careful user and always take good care of my gear.
