Canon RF 70-200mm f/2.8L IS Overview

By B&H Photo's
Versatile Telephoto Zoom Lens for EOS RF-Mount Mirrorless Cameras
This impressive L-Series lens offers a telephoto zoom focal length for getting closer to faraway subjects. Canon's lightest and shortest 70-200mm f/2.8 lens ever, the RF 70-200mm f/2.8 L IS USM is engineered to make traveling more comfortable, offering a compact and portable design that's easy to pack and carry wherever you go.
Constant f/2.8 Aperture
  • Bright f/2.8 constant maximum aperture maintains consistent illumination throughout the zoom range and suits working in low-light conditions as well as affords increased control over depth of field for working with selective focus techniques.
  • Rounded nine-blade diaphragm contributes to a pleasing bokeh quality.
  • The front and rear elements feature a protective Fluorine coating to resist fingerprints and smudges and to make cleaning significantly easier.
Advanced Optical Design
  • One UD (Ultra-Low Dispersion) element and one Super UD element help to minimize chromatic aberrations and color fringing in order to provide greater clarity and color accuracy.
  • Two aspherical elements are used to correct spherical aberrations and distortion for improved sharpness and accurate rendering.
  • An Air Sphere Coating (ASC) has been applied to lens elements to reduce backlit flaring and ghosting for maintained light transmission and high contrast in strong lighting conditions.
Dual Nano USM AF System
Dual Nano USM system utilizes both a ring type USM and an STM mechanism to realize quick and accurate focusing.
  • Smooth and nearly silent autofocus suits both photography and video applications.
  • Full-time manual focus control available when working in the one-shot AF mode.
Optical Image Stabilization
  • An Optical Image Stabilizer helps to minimize the appearance of camera shake by five stops.
  • Enables working in low-light conditions and with slower shutter speeds.
  • Three discrete IS modes are available: standard single-shot mode, a panning-optimized mode, and a mode that only activates the Image Stabilizer during the exposure.
Customizable Control Ring
  • Configurable Control Ring can be used to adjust a variety of exposure settings, including aperture, ISO, and exposure compensation.
Analog Controls
  • Focus Limiter switch allows selecting subject focal range.
  • Auto Focus / Manual Focus selector switch
  • image Stabilizer switch and Stabilizer Mode Selector switch.
Rugged, Weather-Resistant Design
  • Weather-resistant design protects against dust and moisture to enable use in inclement conditions.
  • L-Series level vibration shock resistance in the lens barrel, helping to maintain focus and settings even in turbulent situations.
Rotating Tripod Collar
  • Removable rotating tripod collar is included and benefits working with the lens atop a tripod or monopod.

Canon RF 70-200mm f/2.8L IS Reviews

HOLY....

This lens is nothing but amazing. I had to replace my old 70-200 EF with this when it stopped working with my new R5. I love the compact form and the weight which makes it easier to carry and shoot with. Paired with my Canon R5, the quality of the imagery it produces is astounding. I love the speed, I shoot sports and the older lens felt a little laggy compared to shooting with this one. If you are looking to upgrade you old EF glass this is the one.

I've been with canon since I started with photography, it would be 13 or 14 years ago. I had film and digital camera with different lens. I had a 70-200 mm with my canon mark iii and this worked very well even when I fell down in a river and this crashed with rocks this continues working well, but the new lens Rf 70-200 mm 2.8 is so fragile or came with a defect. Since I bought it I saw how some part of the photograph was in focus and other not, I thought maybe that would be the focus of this new lens, and I should use it always around f8 because to see some focus on a couple even when they are in the same distance one of them was on not focus!! I was curious why this happens and take out the lens of the camera, and I saw how some metal parts were broken even when I never remove the lens from camera of the lens does not have any scratch, I have two cameras and two lenses for my wedding business. I can't recommend it even when I love how looks the lens but it's is so fragile and poor quality for a wedding photographer

Poor design

The effort required to zoom in and out quickly is obscene. When following fast moving objects the operator can usually turn the zoom ring with their thumb and quickly arrive at the proper zoom position. This lens requires multiple turns to get to the proper zoom position because the zoom ring only moves the movable lens a small amount each turn. This requires much more effort and makes it slower to get to the correct position. I sent mine back to B &H (thanks for their wonderful service) and will wait until Canon comes out with a version II that corrects this problem. I have had and still have many Canon zoom lenses from the EF's and RF's and never had this issue before.

Great lens, no regrets it does everything I had hoped for and more coupled with the amazing auto focus on the R6 I can’t hardly miss a shot.

Asked by: Xiang
No. This lens is not interchangeable with EF teleconverters. For the same reason this lens can NOT be mounted to a DSLR (EF mount) camera. This is a brand new mount, RF.

This lens can i usa mark D5
Asked by: Mahesh
Unfortunately, no. This is an RF mount lens, which are only compatible with Canon mirrorless "R" series cameras. Your camera (think you mean 5D) is an EF mount, meaning it is compatible with any EF lenses (of which there is a huge selection). The EF mount 70-200mm f2.8 is a wonderful lens, and actually cheaper. The main difference (besides the mentioned lens mount and compatibility differences) is that the EF version is internal zoom, meaning the lens barrel does not extend when zooming. Some believe this is better for weather/dust proofing. The RF version extends when zooming, which makes the lens significantly lighter, and also smaller when retracted.

Does this come with the tripod mount that connects to your tripod, or just the "tripod adapter ring" as seen paired with the RF 100mm tripod collar https://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/1634537-REG/canon_4517c001_unit_tripod_mnt_ring_adptr.html? On Canon's website it doesn't say that it's included.

Good morning, Interested if the Lens hood can still be used at the same time as a 82mm ND Filter placed on the front of the lens with a 77 to 82mm adapter? Would the Lens Hood have to be taken off in that case? Thank you
Asked by: Marc
The hood can only be used when using a 77mm filter since the lens is made for use with 77mm filters. A larger filter would interfere with the manufacturers hood on any lens. If your 82mm filter has front threads you can use a 3rd party screw on 82mm hood instead.
