Canon RF 70-200mm f/4L IS USM Overview

Popular for its reach and flexibility, the Canon RF 70-200mm f/4 L IS USM is a fresh take on this well-regarded focal length, featuring an impressively sleek and lightweight form factor perfect for their full-frame mirrorless cameras. The constant f/4 maximum aperture strikes a balance between being bright enough for available light shooting while also contributing to the especially portable, handholdable design. Complementing this is an apt Optical Image Stabilizer, which compensates for up to 5 stops of camera shake, or up to an impressive 7.5 stops of shake correction when paired with an EOS R-type body with IBIS.

Optically, this lens incorporates four UD elements, which suppress a variety of aberrations throughout the zoom range for high clarity, and an Air Sphere Coating is also featured to reduce flare and ghosting. Balancing the distinguished optical system is a Dual Nano USM focus system, which delivers fast, nearly silent autofocus performance with full-time manual focus override. Additionally, this 70-200mm is weather-sealed and has a fluorine coating to protect the front and rear elements.

Note:
In December of 2021, firmware update 1.1.0 added two key improvements. Please see the Features section below for details. Depending on when you received your lens, it may already have this firmware version. You can check the version in the camera menu, as instructed in the manual.
Benefits
Versatile telephoto zoom lens is designed for use with full-frame Canon RF-mount mirrorless cameras.
Constant f/4 maximum aperture affords consistent performance throughout the zoom range and also contributes to the relatively lightweight design and compact form factor.
Four UD (Ultralow Dispersion) elements help to minimize chromatic aberrations and color fringing in order to provide greater clarity and color accuracy.
An Air Sphere Coating (ASC) has been applied to lens elements to reduce backlit flaring and ghosting for maintained light transmission and high contrast in strong lighting conditions.
An Optical Image Stabilizer helps to minimize the appearance of camera shake by 5 stops to better enable working in low-light conditions and with slower shutter speeds. Also, when working with select cameras, up to 7.5 stops of stabilization may be available with the Coordinated Optical Image Stabilizer and In-Body Image Stabilizer.
Dual Nano USM system utilizes both a ring type USM and an STM mechanism to realize quick and accurate focusing that is also smooth and nearly silent to suit both photography and video applications. This focusing system also affords full-time manual focus control when working in the one-shot AF mode.
Configurable Control Ring can be used to adjust a variety of exposure settings, including aperture, ISO, and exposure compensation.
Protective fluorine coating has been applied to the front and rear element to resist fingerprints and smudges and to make cleaning these elements significantly easier.
As a member of the esteemed L-series, this lens has a weather-resistant design that protects against dust and moisture to enable its use in inclement conditions.
Firmware Update 1.1.0 (December 2021)
Adds an electronic full-time manual focus function (a function that enables constant manual focus adjustment in both one-shot AF and servo AF), which is enabled when using the EOS R5, EOS R6, and EOS R3 cameras.
Improves an issue in which the background is not blurred when performing slow panning with the IS (Image Stabilization) mode set to Mode 2 or Mode 3.

Canon RF 70-200mm f/4L IS USM Reviews

A very sharp lens

This lens produces very sharp images and the constant f4 even when zoomed to 200mm is great for mid-light conditions without the need for additional lighting or flash systems. As with all Canon L lenses, the quality and workmanship of is excellent.

This is a great lens!

Amazing Lens.  I recently made the transition from EF to RF after years of being a staunch EF supporter.  The first time I shot the R3, I was hooked for good. My problem was I had/have 12 EOS EF lenses I didn’t know what to do with.  My first non-RF lens purchase was the Canon EF to RF converter so my inventory of EF lenses wouldn’t go to waste. For the most part, the converter does the job admirably.  All the lens functions transfer; the AF works just as fast and crisp gives me the tack-sharp images I expect from Canon.  My EF 70-200mm f/2.8 was the exception.  For some reason, it just doesn’t work well with the converter.  Through several iterations of EOS EF cameras from the 1Dx Mark II through the 5DS series, that lens was pretty much my workhorse……………… Well, that and the EF 24-70 f/2.8.  So I checked the data sheets and the reviews on the RF 70-200 f/2.8 as well as the less expensive f/4.0 and discovered how favorably the f/4.0 lens was viewed.  So before buying one, I got a loaner from Canon Professional Services and shot it for 10 days, and was incredibly surprised by its performance.  The first thing you notice is how smaller and lighter it is from its big brother, and I must confess, I have always been a lens status snob believing the only way to go was f/2.8 whenever possible.  So my collection of EF 200, 300 and 600mm lenses, which could have put a Porsche in my garage instead of a Ford Edge, caused me to turn my nose down at f/4.0 or f/6.3 lenses.  Big mistake. In reality, if I had to be honest, I can’t remember a single shooting event in the years I’ve been a photographer, where I any of the 2.8 lenses gave me an advantage over the competition.  Yes, they are more expensive.  Yes they have more glass, but this RF 70-200 f/4.0 has shown me it’s as good in every way as its higher priced brother. I immediately bought one from B&H after the loan period was over and am completely satisfied.  This is a great lens, and should be in very serious photographer’s bag.

Does this lens have a threaded hole for a tripod?
Asked by: Brent
The lens is NOT front heavy like most 70-200, add the fact the lens is very short. This lens is 0.5" longer than the RF 24-105, same diameter and a few grams lighter. I have never heard of someone wanting a tripod mount for the RF 24-105. The camera body tripod mount works great.

Can you use the Canon 2X Extender with this lens?
Asked by: Fernando
Unfortunately, it seems that the shorter barrel of the new RF 70-200 does not accommodate the RF 1.4x or 2.0x teleconverters. Currently, the only three compatible RF lenses are the 100-500, 600 f/11, and 800 f/11.
