Canon RF 70-200mm f/4L IS USM Overview

By B&H Photo's

Popular for its reach and flexibility, the Canon RF 70-200mm f/4 L IS USM is a fresh take on this well-regarded focal length, featuring an impressively sleek and lightweight form factor perfect for their full-frame mirrorless cameras. The constant f/4 maximum aperture strikes a balance between being bright enough for available light shooting while also contributing to the especially portable, handholdable design. Complementing this is an apt Optical Image Stabilizer, which compensates for up to 5 stops of camera shake, or up to an impressive 7.5 stops of shake correction when paired with an EOS R-type body with IBIS.

Optically, this lens incorporates four UD elements, which suppress a variety of aberrations throughout the zoom range for high clarity, and an Air Sphere Coating is also featured to reduce flare and ghosting. Balancing the distinguished optical system is a Dual Nano USM focus system, which delivers fast, nearly silent autofocus performance with full-time manual focus override. Additionally, this 70-200mm is weather-sealed and has a fluorine coating to protect the front and rear elements.

Note:
In December of 2021, firmware update 1.1.0 added two key improvements. Please see the Features section below for details. Depending on when you received your lens, it may already have this firmware version. You can check the version in the camera menu, as instructed in the manual.
Key Features
Versatile telephoto zoom lens is designed for use with full-frame Canon RF-mount mirrorless cameras.
Constant f/4 maximum aperture affords consistent performance throughout the zoom range and also contributes to the relatively lightweight design and compact form factor.
Four UD (Ultra-Low Dispersion) elements help to minimize chromatic aberrations and color fringing in order to provide greater clarity and color accuracy.
An Air Sphere Coating (ASC) has been applied to lens elements to reduce backlit flaring and ghosting for maintained light transmission and high contrast in strong lighting conditions.
An Optical Image Stabilizer helps to minimize the appearance of camera shake by 5 stops to better enable working in low-light conditions and with slower shutter speeds. Also, when working with select cameras, up to 7.5 stops of stabilization may be available with the Coordinated Optical Image Stabilizer and In-Body Image Stabilizer.
Dual Nano USM system utilizes both a ring type USM and an STM mechanism to realize quick and accurate focusing that is also smooth and nearly silent to suit both photography and video applications. This focusing system also affords full-time manual focus control when working in the one-shot AF mode.
Configurable Control Ring can be used to adjust a variety of exposure settings, including aperture, ISO, and exposure compensation.
Protective fluorine coating has been applied to the front and rear element to resist fingerprints and smudges and to make cleaning these elements significantly easier.
As a member of the esteemed L-series, this lens has a weather-resistant design that protects against dust and moisture to enable its use in inclement conditions.
Firmware Update 1.1.0 (December 2021)
Adds an electronic full-time manual focus function (a function that enables constant manual focus adjustment in both one-shot AF and servo AF), which is enabled when using the EOS R5, EOS R6, and EOS R3 cameras.
Improves an issue in which the background is not blurred when performing slow panning with the IS (Image Stabilization) mode set to Mode 2 or Mode 3.

Canon RF 70-200mm f/4L IS USM Reviews

Amazing lens

I just upgraded from a 6D and I'm stunned by this lens. It's sharper than I imaged and I'm getting more keepers between the R6 Mark ii and this lens.

A wonderful alternative to the 2.8 70-200. The compact size, low weight, beautiful rendering, and ergonomics make this a better choice to the slightly heavier 2.8 unless you truly needed slightly more bokeh and a touch more speed. Oh, and its about $1000 USD less! Focusing, zooming, the buttons...everything works well and very smooth. It is truly amazing that it is so light and compact, and the zoom ring being the first adjustment point is great. For anyone who notices a noise when the lens is off and vertical - be not afraid, that is the floating IS element. I was able to use 2.8 70-200 briefly but didn't need the extra light. Currently using this on an R5 and the colors are amazing. Get this if you 1) shoot a lot outside and even with subpar to decent or controlled light 2) prioritize space and weight 3) want to save $1000 4) aren't getting paid to take photos.

This is much smaller than my EF 70-200. Almost the size of my RF 24-70, so perfect for any activity where you want to save as much weight and size as possible. The images are sharp and free from CA, so that's a winner for me!

Minimal Size/Weight, Excellent Optical Performance

My EF 70-200mm IS USM f4 has been my favorite Canon lens since 2010. I was hesitant to let it go in favor of the RF version. I finally did because of an upcoming trip and the fact that the RF version is so much easier to pack in a small bag. I couldn't be happier. The RF is at least as good... possibly very slightly better optically than the EF version. The size/weight is amazing. It's close to the same length and weight of the RF 24-105mm f4. Very convenient to carry around.

Perfect Lens for Me

I've been happily using the EF 70-200 f4 L IS for 11 years, so I decided to treat myself to it's RF replacement. Great idea! This is a fine lens, perfect for my needs. The price point is a lot nicer than the F2.8 version, so if you don't actually NEED that extra f-stop, save the $1000 and the extra pound of weight and get this lens. I've seen reviews that mention a minute, almost undetectable difference in sharpness, but in real world usage, there is nothing to it. Even at f4, its widest aperture, its dead on sharp. Stop down one or 2 stops and it just gets better. It's almost one pound lighter and nearly 2 inches shorter than the f2.8. For me that means that I'm more likely to actually have it with me, even at times when I'm trying to save space and weight. I simply haven't found anything negative to say about this lens.

The lens is NOT front heavy like most 70-200, add the fact the lens is very short. This lens is 0.5" longer than the RF 24-105, same diameter and a few grams lighter. I have never heard of someone wanting a tripod mount for the RF 24-105. The camera body tripod mount works great.

Unfortunately, it seems that the shorter barrel of the new RF 70-200 does not accommodate the RF 1.4x or 2.0x teleconverters. Currently, the only three compatible RF lenses are the 100-500, 600 f/11, and 800 f/11.
