The Quick-Link Tripod Head Quick Release Set from Arca-Swiss combines a mounting receiver for tripods and an insert disc plate for tripod heads, which together make attaching and detaching a tripod head quick and simple. The Quick-Link disc mounts on the base of any tripod head, and the receiver to the mounting plate mounts on the leg set. Then simply place the head assembly into the receiver and twist the knurled, bayonet-type locking ring to secure it in place. Additional disc mounts are available, so switching heads takes just moments - making working with multiple heads quick and easy. There's no more need for packing multiple tripods when traveling or working on location. The installed plates can be left permanently in place, so the tripod can be set up and ready to go in just moments.

What is it?
From Arca-Swiss's website: Combining a mounting plate for the tripod and an insert plate that attaches to the tripod head. Attaching and detaching the tripod head becomes a snap. The installed
plates can thus be left permanently on the tripod or on the tripod head. By means of a solid bayonet, the tripod head with its insert plate is placed in the mounting plate and securely fixed by a knurled rotating ring.

Regarding the locking mechanism .... When placing the head on the tripod, does the cameral have to be turned to lock it in place or does the 'locking ring' get turned to lock down the head to the tripod? Can the camera then be turned and accidentally unlock the head from the tripod?
Hello Joseph,
No, you do not need to turn the camera or the tripod head. You screw the Quicklink disk on the bottom of your tripod head. Then you screw the Quicklink receiver on your tripod. When you install your tripod head in the receiver, there is only one possible position: when the 3 pins of the receiver enter the 3 openings of the Quicklink disk. Then no rotation of the head is possible. Finish by locking the head by turning the receiver ring. Here is an interesting review of the ARCA-SWISS QuickLink.

I'm interested in using one of these on an RRS TFC-34 tripod. Is the receiver unit's diameter wide enough that it would interfere with the ability of the tripod legs to raise into their most splayed locked position? What is the receiver's actual diameter where it makes contact with a tripod's apex?
The diameter of the base for the Arca Swiss Quick-Link Tripod Head Quick Release Set is 2.75 inches, so that may interfere with the legs on the TFC-34 are raised.
