FE 135mm f/1.8 GM Lens with UV Filter Kit Overview

By B&H Photo's
Sony FE 135mm f/1.8 GM Lens
Prized for its ability to isolate focus, the FE 135mm f/1.8 GM from Sony is a medium telephoto prime characterized by a bright and sophisticated design. Perfect for portraiture, this lens also excels in close-range sports shooting and as a unique focal length for landscape subjects. Its G Master design prioritizes both sharpness and bokeh quality and the lens also sports fast autofocus capabilities and a durable build quality.
Fast Design and Advanced Optics
  • As part of Sony's esteemed G Master series, this lens is designed to achieve notably high resolution and sharpness through the correction of a wide variety of spherical and chromatic aberrations.
  • Bright f/1.8 maximum aperture benefits working in difficult lighting conditions and also offers a wealth of control over focus position when using shallow depth of field techniques.
  • Rounded 11-blade diaphragm contributes to a pleasing bokeh quality when employing selective focus techniques.
  • One XA element is incorporated into the optical design, which features superior surface precision for effective control over astigmatism, field curvature, coma, and other spherical aberrations.
  • Two extra-low dispersion elements, including one Super ED element, are featured in the lens design and help to reduce chromatic aberrations and color fringing for improved clarity and color neutrality.
  • A Nano AR Coating has been applied to reduce surface reflections, flare, and ghosting for increased contrast and color rendering in strong lighting conditions.
Fast and Accurate AF
  • XD Linear Motor system and internal focus mechanism provides quick, quiet, and precise autofocus performance and also contributes to more natural, intuitive manual focus control.
  • Minimum focusing distance of just 2.3' renders a 0.25x maximum magnification for working with close-up subjects.
  • Two customizable focus hold buttons are present on the lens barrel for intuitive tactile control and rapid access to select settings.
Weather-Sealed Construction and Intuitive Handling
  • Physical aperture ring can be de-clicked for smooth, silent aperture switching to benefit video applications.
  • Dust- and moisture-sealed design better permits working in inclement conditions and rubberized control rings benefit handling in colder temperatures.
  • Fluorine-coated front element resists dust, moisture, and fingerprints and is easy to clean.
Chiaro Pro 82mm 98-UVATS UV Filter

The Pro 82mm 98-UVATS UV Filter is one of Chiaro’s highest-rated protective UV filters with 98% light transmission. It’s ideal for photographers of all levels who demand high-quality glass and other essential features for excellent image fidelity and construction.

To achieve 98% light transmission, Chiaro uses highly-polished optical glass, multi-coating, and additional advanced elements that improve the filter’s light transmission. A scratch-resistant coating minimizes scratching of the glass and helps assure that water, oil, dust, and fingerprints are removed with a gentle wipe. Its hard-anodized aluminum filter ring is designed to screw on and off effortlessly, and it is thin to prevent vignetting when used with wide-angle lenses. Side knurling helps assure that you’ll have a firm grip when attaching or removing your filter.

Image quality is what matters most at Chiaro. The company has tested and combined many features and essentials to achieve superior image quality and the highest light transmission. To help take the confusion out of selecting a filter, Chiaro prominently displays the light transmission levels so that you can choose the perfect filter for your lens and photo session.

98% Light Transmission
Protecting your lens doesn't mean you have to lose optical quality. By using highly-polished optical glass and advanced coatings, Chiaro offers a 98% transmission rate, which is an excellent transmission rate for glass. And the company verifies the ratings with ISO certified lab testing.
Resistance Coating
The layers of advanced resistance coating on the filter are designed to resist moderate scratches, and allow you to easily clean your filter. Water beads up and rolls off your filter, and oil and fingerprints can come off with a gentle wipe. Dust and debris won't adhere to the filter and can be removed with a puff of air.
Polished Optical Glass
Glass that's polished to perfection is essential to achieve a high level of light transmission. The optical glass in this Chiaro filter is highly-polished for flatness that ensures excellent optical clarity.
Multi-Coating
Multi-coating enhances light transmission to the demanding level set for all Chiaro filters. It reduces unwanted internal reflections and ghosting that can compromise your images.
UV Protection
The filter blocks UV light and reduces the bluish cast of daylight that can affect color accuracy, especially at higher altitudes.
Hard Anodized Aluminum Construction
The process of hard anodizing toughens and strengthens the aluminum for a lightweight yet durable filter ring.
Slim Design
Measuring only 3.2mm, this filter is slim enough to use on wide-angle lenses without experiencing vignetting.
Top and Side Knurling
In addition to top knurling, Chiaro added side knurling to better grip the filter when you're attaching and removing it, or when you're stacking filters.
Secure Attachment
It takes two full turns to mount the filter on your lens. This feature will securely hold your Chiaro filter through the most demanding photo shoots.
Front Threads
The front threads on the filter allow you to stack filters by screwing them onto your Chiaro filter.

Great lens

I purchased this lens to capture dogs in action, and it does an excellent job paired with the A7RV. The Aperture ring is a nice touch. It is my go-to outdoor lens now for dogs and children as it is much faster to focus and lighter than my 24-70.

This lens truly is one of the most amazing lenses you can buy. Not only is it phenomenal for portraits, but it's a fantastic faux-macro due to its ability to be much closer to a subject than other long primes on the market. This lens is so versatile, clean, and beautiful. You absolutely will not regret owning it!

This lens is so good you'll never want to remove it, so hopefully you'll have a second body to use your other lenses...I'm not even joking!

Sony FE 135mm f/1.8 GM Lens is a weather seal lens and one of the finest professional lenses in the market. Sony tends to keep some of the best quality control in the industry but unfortunately, it looks like you got 2 defective units back to back. We apologize for the inconvenience. I will recommend exchanging the lens if you are within the first 30 days of your purchase with B&H.

Is this lens very sharp at all apertures?

Is this lens very sharp at all apertures?
Asked by: Joe Adreon
From F1.8 to F5.6 the lens is exceptionally sharp, through F8.0 still very sharp, and at F11.0 still very sharp, but then degrading a bit at F16.0. It is very rare for a lens to be ultra sharp at its largest aperture setting (F1.8 here). It is in fact the sharpest lens wide open of any lens I know, with the second best wide open being the 35mm F1.4 GM

Can you use this as a macro lens?
Asked by: Debra
I own the 135 mm as well as the 90 mm Sony FE macro lens. They are both excellent lenses for their intended purpose. I have Vello EX-SFED 10mm and 16mm extension tubes that I purchased to use with the 135 mm lens. They work well singly or combined as a 26mm tube, but they do not achieve the magnification that is possible with the 90 mm macro. When I photograph a printed page at the minimum distance I can focus, the letter L is about 20% larger with the 90mm Macro. In both cases, the image is excellent with very high resolution and nice contrast. I may like the contrast of the 135mm better.

Any idea why Sony didn't implement OSS on this GM 135mm telephoto?

While we cannot be sure of the exact reason, it is likely because most of their current cameras have IBIS so adding this to the lens would increase the cost and weight.

If this is the focal length that works for you, the lens is absolutely sharp wide open and renders beautifully, so you can get the max light hitting the sensor.
