Hoya NDx400 Overview

The Hoya 77mm NDx400 HMC Filter is a solid neutral density filter that enables a 9-stop increase in exposure length. The optical 2.7 density creates a darkening of the entire image, allowing you to photograph with a wider aperture or slower shutter speed than normally required. By slowing your exposure time or increasing your aperture, you are able to control depth of field and convey movement more easily.

This filter features a three-layer HMC multi-coating, which provides 98-99% light transmission and helps to reduce internal flare and reflections. It is constructed from high-quality optical glass for notable image clarity and is set in a durable aluminum filter ring.

2.7 ND filter darkens the image, allowing you to photograph with a slower shutter speed or wider aperture than normally required.
Providing a 9-stop reduction, this filter allows you to control depth of field and convey movement more easily.
Three-layer multi coating helps to minimize internal reflections and ghosting and maintain an overall neutral color balance.

Hoya NDx400 Reviews

Okay for the money

It has color casts that are difficult to remove. The coatings are easy to smear. I've had two other Hoya filters for longer (ND8 and CPL) and don't suffer from these issues (or at least not at the same level).

Works great

Best use is on sunny days where you want to slow down the shutter speed.

More than adequate

I shopped and read reviews on several brands of nd filters and decided on the Hoya brand. I had a Hoya polarizer for many years and it is still doing a great job. I have a heliopan as well which has a sturdier build but no discernible diff in my pictures. The nd filter provided several stops of reduced exposure with no color cast. It has a quality build. I hope it lasts like my other Hoya filter.

Perfecto

question

I've never had one of these filters; does this screw onto the end of my 24-70mm like my filter?
Asked by: Anonymous
Yes, the Hoya 77mm NDX400 HMC Filter screws onto the front of a lens, such as a 24-70mm or other lenses with a 77mm filter thread.

This filter with a variable degree of density or permanent? If a variable, the density begins with what?Thank you!Yuri

This filter is not variable. It offers a constant 9 stops of light loss. It is generally used where exposures of a few seconds to a few minutes are desired.

question

I have this filter already. Wondering if it can be used to photograph a solar eclipse safely (protect my Nikon D7100 sensor)? I have eclipse glasses for myself, just want to make sure that I protect my camera adequately. Thanks
Asked by: April S.
You will need a sun filter. Check with Edmund Scientific Co. in NJ if they still stock item. If not, check with other telescope manufacturers.

question

Hi, can this 9-stops ND filter be used on a 16mm full frame lens (and Full Frame DSLR)?Or it would deliver uneven exposure and/or coloration on long exposure shotting?Thank you!
Asked by: PABLO
Yes it works great. You will need to take off the uv filter first though to avoid vignetting
