Matthews 159136 Overview

Add this 40 x 40" Matthbounce Floppy to your grip kit for easily rigged light control, with the option to open the flag into a large 40 x 80" reflective surface. Because Matthews has shaved 8" off both the height and width of their traditional 4 x 4' floppy, this bounce's compact size allows it to be transported in certain passenger vehicles without the need for a dedicated grip truck or cargo van.
Simply undo the hook-and-loop touch fasteners at the corners, and the top hinge Floppy "flops" opens to become a large 40 x 80" reflective surface that creates a tent-like structure for creating versatile washes of bounced light. Its two sections are comprised of heavyweight commando cloth duvetyne for optimized blockage of incoming light transmissions and an inner surface of Matthew's ultra-reflective Matthbounce fabric. Though its obvious application is shaping light to achieve a wide variety of looks from the same sources, it can also double in a pinch as a heat-resistant sunshade while shooting on location or as a privacy screen in the studio. The frame is hollow steel tubing to cut down on weight, while the solid steel mounting rod can stand up to years of heavy use.

For years I've been trying to figure out a way to get larger 'rags' in smaller vehicles. Finally, Matthews has filled the gap. I've got two of these 40x40 Matthbounce Floppies, and I'm sure I'll get a couple more as well as some traditional floppies in this same size. Obviously when I've got a full-sized truck, the 48 is the size I'll go for, but the Matthbounce is also something I'll be looking for in the larger size as well. Love lining up a couple of these and bouncing through a silk for a beautiful book light setup. Two together also make a super-fast cove setup.

It looks like I'm getting conflicting answers on my question which was "When unfolded to its 40x80 position is one side all white and one is all black? I can't tell from the photos if the back side is all black." Let me try to clarify, When unfolded to 40x80, is one 40x80 side all black and can be used as negative and the other 40x80 side all white to be used as a bounce?
Asked by: Luke
Why doesn’t the manufacturer add some basic pics so we all know what this thing is. We obviously are interested but the terrible clarity of the marketing photos and description really make it hard to pull the trigger. Half the answers here are saying it’s not all white on one side and all black on the other and there’s no actual picture of the product!

Where is the hinge? The photos aren't clear. Is it on the edge with the pin or one of the sides?
Asked by: Andrew
It is located on the pin side. Matthew's does offer other variants in its 4x4 line of floppies if you are looking for that.

Correct, one side is all black, the side featuring the mounting pin, and the other side is all white.

Is the black side good enough to create a negative fill? It looks more reflective than Duvetyne.
Asked by: Alyson
The black side of Matthbounce material is standard black ripstop, also known as sailcloth. It is certainly a bit more reflective than Duvetyn which is specifically engineered to absorb light, but the ripstop will certainly help in providing negative fill. It won’t do as good of a job as the Duvetyn that was made for this application, but it will provide negative fill.
