Pairing speed and refined optics, the HD PENTAX-D FA* 85mm f/1.4 ED SDM AW from Pentax is a short-telephoto lens offering the classic focal length and bright design that gives it its portrait-length designation. Portrait-length prime lens is designed for full-frame Pentax K-mount cameras but is also suitable for APS-C models where it provides a 130mm equivalent focal length.
Impressively fast f/1.4 maximum aperture suits working in low-light conditions and also enables greater control over depth of field for isolating subject matter using selective focus techniques.
Three Super ED extra-low dispersion elements and one glass-molded aspherical element help to reduce chromatic and spherical aberrations in order to improve clarity, color accuracy, and sharpness.
Multi-layer HD Coating has been applied to individual elements to reduce surface reflections, flare, and ghosting for greater contrast and color fidelity when working in strong lighting conditions.
Ring-type Supersonic Direct-drive Motor (SDM) delivers quick, quiet, and precise focusing performance to suit working with moving subjects. A Quick-Shift Focus System also allows for fast switching between AF and MF settings.
A sealed All Weather (AW) construction benefits this lens' use in inclement conditions, and a Super Protect (SP) coating has also been applied to the front lens element to guard against dust, dirt, and smearing.
Rounded nine-blade diaphragm contributes to a pleasing bokeh quality.
Electromagnetic diaphragm enables more accurate exposure control during video recording. This mechanism is available only when used in conjunction with K-1 Mark II, K-1, K-3 Mark II, K-3, KP, K-70, K-50, K-S2, and K-S1 cameras.

I'm a Pentax user since the 70's. I have multiple Pentax lens and camera bodies. This lens is outstanding. I chose the silver version. Smooth operation. Crisp images out to edges. Very quiet or noiseless. Beautiful hood. Performing flawlessly so far. Heavy and built like a tank. I do lots of nature photography and the lens is awesome. Perfect for portraits also as colors are perfect. Bouquet is excellent. I love the lens.

One of the greatest lenses I’ve ever used!

I have worked with the highest performance lenses on many different formats, from many different brands: Canon, Fujifilm, Olympus, Pentax, Phase One, Sigma, Sony, Tamron, Zeiss—and this lens is among the best! It was immediately clear to me after reviewing my initial test images that this lens is likely to become my all-time favorite lens. I also own the HD Pentax-D FA* 50mm F1.4 SDM AW and, while a fantastic lens itself, this 85mm demonstrates Pentax’s finest work. If Pentax continues to develop D FA* lenses at this caliber, I will be a buyer for almost anything they release. If this lens is anything to go on, the K-mount has a brilliant future!

Outstanding but heavy

Wow! That is the first reaction when you see the lens, when you take it into your hand and when you take your first shots. Excellent sharpness, color rendition, great built, but way too heavy for the city or for a prolonged photoshoot at the wedding... studio lens at its best. 2,5kg (lens + body) in your hand feels like a great workout! Give it a try. The price is the issue, but overall if you are a diehard Pentaxian go for it! It's once in your lifetime experience:)

Special lens

This is a beautiful lens, and I feel fortunate to own one. It is large and heavy, but still feels good on my K1 body. The weight and size is more than worth it when you see the results, perfectly sharp even when wide open, and saturated colors with gorgeous bokeh. It took me a few days to start seeing the full potential, and to appreciate the quality of this piece of equipment. The ability to control the depth of field so tightly, allowing stunning contrasts between crystal clear focus areas and buttery smooth background opens up a whole new world of creative possibilities. Highly recommended.

Close to perfect!
