Synology DS220+ External HDD/SSD Overview

Built with a dual-core processor, an AES-NI hardware encryption engine, and Btrfs file system support, the DiskStation DS220+ 2-Bay NAS Enclosure from Synology is a compact NAS designed to streamline your data and multimedia management. It features smooth data sharing, video streaming, and photo indexing, as well as well-rounded data protection and recovery options. The DS220+ is equipped with two drive bays that are capable of natively supporting 3.5" SATA hard drives, as well as 2.5" SATA hard drives and SSDs. Using its two drive bays, this NAS will allow you to store and share a large number of files with up to 2048 user accounts and 1500 maximum concurrent connections.

The DS220+ runs on Synology DiskStation Manager (DSM) OS, which is a browser-based operating system which helps to simplify managing your Synology NAS. Its CPU is a 2.0 GHz Intel Celeron J4025 Dual-Core with a burst frequency of up to 2.9 GHz, and its 2GB of DDR4 RAM, which can be upgraded to 6GB, allows frequently used files and applications to be quickly accessed. Using its Gigabit Ethernet port, this NAS is capable of sequential reads of up to 225.98 MB/s and sequential writes of up to 192.21 MB/s, as well as encrypted reads of up to 225.99 MB/s and encrypted writes of 195.2 MB/s.

Also featured are two USB 3.0 Type-A ports for connecting external devices, and network connectivity is achieved via the dual integrated Gigabit Ethernet ports that support link aggregation and failover, allowing your stored data to be shared with users throughout the network. Data may also be made remotely available through the free iOS and Android applications. For those who require RAID support, the DS220+ supports RAID 0 and 1, as well Synology Hybrid RAID and Basic RAID, each of which offers performance, data redundancy, or a combination of both. For those who do not require a RAID, JBOD is also available, allowing each drive bay to be individually utilized.

The DS220+ is engineered to be energy efficient. Not only does it offer a 92 x 92mm fan to help keep the system running cool at all times, its noise dampening design, with a rating of 19.3 dBA, makes for quiet operations. The server supports numerous scheduled power on/off cycles and hard drive hibernation to further minimize power consumption and operation expenses.

The Synology DiskStation DS220+ 2-Bay NAS Enclosure operates on 100-240 VAC at 50/60 Hz and includes an accessory pack, a 60W AC power adapter, an AC power cord, and two RJ45 LAN cables. It is protected by a limited 2-year warranty.

Synology DS220+ External HDD/SSD Reviews

Good starting NAS

Very easy to use right out of the package. Setup was pretty simple. Only issue is that the RAM/processor can slow it down, especially when first adding data but once its all there, it runs very well.

So Well Designed and Easy

I recently purchased the Synology DS220+ to replace an existing older system from a different vendor. I was impressed by the thoughtful design. Installing the disk drives took only a couple of minutes and required no tools at all, as the disk slides have built-in plastic clips that snap into the disk mounting holes. The software installation was automated and simple. The user-friendly GUI led me through the configuration process, and I was ready to use the product as soon as the drives were formatted. The documentation is clear and well-written. I very much appreciate the Recycle Bin feature, so when I accidentally delete a needed file I can quickly restore it without resorting to backups. Very highly recommended.

Works Well. Was Easy to Install

When I first received the Synology DS220+ I did not have the disks I planned to install as they were not in stock. Instead, I installed a 3TB WD Red drive from an old WD NAS, and got started. Everything worked well, however, the faulty sectors on the drive seemed to drive the Synology crazy and I did need to tell it several times to allow the system to read and write to the disk. Not a huge detour, but a bit surprising as I expected the bad sectors to have been identified during set up and not used. My final drives, a pair of 12 TB WD Red, arrived a few weeks later and I installed one and the information on the 3TB drive was transferred without intervention. I then removed the 3TB drive and installed the second 12 TB drive and it duplicated the data to that drive. It did take a bit of searching to find the exact set up sequence, but it has been running without a problem for two months now. I use it to stream recorded TV shows and as general storage for data, pictures, music, etc. So far I am very pleased with my selection.

Fantastic backup system

Had been using a previous version of synology NAS, this unit is much, much faster and the upgraded OS (DSM 7.xx) is far superior. The ABB backup software works perfectly for automated backups of 4 computers in my house. Very glad I upgraded. Haven't setup the movie/music services, but I'm sure they will work great since the older one served up movies without issue.

Ticks Almost All the Boxes

I bought this to get a storage drive out of my desktop and on to the network. I was also hoping to run Plex and Homeassistant on it, to replace a Raspberry Pi that's fulfilling the same purpose. Setup was quick and simple (be aware you will have to format whatever drive you put in it, so don't expect to just plug in a drive full of family photos and go to town), interface is easy to use, and everything is stable and responsive. Plex installed easily as well. The only negative so far is that, while it's theoretically possible to install Homeassistant as a Docker container (my preference, since I use NodeRed), it doesn't work on this unit out of the box as the system specs are too low. Not a game breaker by any means, but a little disappointing.

Great Starter NAS or Time Capsule Alternative

I got this to replace an aging Time Capsule but I wanted something I could use for Windows and Linux too. The Synology DSM is outstanding and this device is way more than I expected. The 8TB IronWolf NAS drives cost more than the DS220.

Can use USB to HDMI converter to view NAS contents direcrly to TV?
Asked by: Adu
No, the Synology DiskStation DS220+ 2-Bay NAS Enclosure BH #SYDS220P does not have a video output or supports a USB to HDMI converter. I would recommend looking into a QNAP NAS, a lot of their NAS models do have built in HDMI outputs. The QNAP TS-253D 2-Bay NAS Enclosure BH #QNTS253D4GUS is a good option.

I want more details about connecting to the LAN ...

I want more details about connecting to the LAN and its computers - the user's manual is no help. There are 2 ether connections and a USB 3. Questions: 1) Can a computer use the USB as a data connection? 2) Can a computer connect directly to one of the LAN ports? 3) Can two computers connect directly to the two LAN ports? 3) Can one LAN port connect directly to a computer and the other to the router? 4) Is there any way other than link aggregation to use both LAN ports? 5) How do the computers on the LAN "mount" the disks? 6) What additional software do I need to load, if any, on a windows machine to properly connect?
Asked by: Jeff
The Synology DiskStation DS220+ 2-Bay NAS Enclosure is meant to connect to to the network and not directly to a computer. The USB ports on the unit are meant to connect to additional drives to expand your storage. Link aggregation is meant to utilize both ports where one is used for downlink and one for uplink. This is actually a very simple to use NAS unit.

I'm looking at using one of the DS220+'s, as a Time Machine drive. My question is: My wife has her computer, and then I use both a laptop, and desktop. How many of these drives would work best?
Asked by: Alex
The answer to "how many" is 2 because it's a 2-bay drive. I have mine set up in RAID 1, so there the 2 drives are mirrored. If one fails, I still have the other one is the thinking. This is highly recommended. The NAS will send you a health report each month and notify you if a drive begins to fail. It will happen one day as a spinning hard drive will not last forever. I had a DS215j and the drives lasted 5 years before starting to fail. I went ahead and upgraded to the DS220+ at the same time and it is light years ahead of that older machine. If you meant "how much space" instead, that depends on what else you're using the NAS for besides a Time Machine drive and how large are your hard drives on your Macs. A rule of thumb is to have your TM drive between 1 and 2 times the size of the Mac's hard drive. This will allow plenty of room for many incremental backups and you'll have many versions of changing files and a greater chance of finding a deleted file that you didn't know got deleted until many months later. If you don't care about that, you can look at the storage space you're using plus about 50% and go with that. I use mine mainly for Surveillance Station and I have all of my photos, music, and movies stored on it. I was using my NAS to do TM backups for a while but I switched back to using a portable hard drive. It's not that essential to back up daily since I also use iCloud. We have two MacBooks and an iMac here. What's important is to set up the NAS in the beginning to use the BTRFS file system so that you can set quotas for each user. You really want a quota because otherwise, macOS will eventually use up much more space than is necessary. Alternatively, like another person pointed out in their answer, you can set up a partition on the NAS hard drives that is the size you need and then set a quota for that volume. Synology has instructions on their website to set up Time Machine here: https://www.synology.com/en-us/knowledgebase/DSM/tutorial/Backup/How_to_back_up_files_from_Mac_to_Synology_NAS_with_Time_Machine#QUZDgW3T1Y
