Canon Extender RF 1.4x Reviews

Glad I bought it…

I had been eyeing this lens extender for the better part of a year. I’m really happy that I finally got it. I use it with my Canon RF100-400mm F5.6-8 lens, and it’s a great combo. Been taking bird photos with it, and they’re amazing.

Great addition to my 100-500mm

While I haven't had a chance to truly break it in, I did get out to do some bird photography to test out the added range. So far, I love the added range it adds, and I haven't noticed a change in the quality of the photo, which was the main reason for choosing the 1.4x over the 2x. I purchased this to capture those really small birds that I couldn't seem to get physically close enough to with my 100-500mm, especially the hummingbirds. I wouldn't call myself an avid bird photographer, just something I've enjoyed in my spare time on my back property. I would recommend for anyone just needing a little extra reach with their lens. What I'm most disappointed with (and I knew this prior to purchasing) is that I can not pair this with my 70-200. I'm not sure what lenses it is compatible with, so if you have other RF lenses you wish to use this with, I would suggest you check if it is compatible with those lenses.

will this extender work with an ef to rf adapter?

will this extender work with an ef to rf adapter?
Asked by: Robin
No, the RF extenders do not work with the EF-RF adapter. The EF-RF adapter doesn't fit over the RF 1.4 or 2.0x teleconverters/extenders. The only way to use a teleconverter with the EF-RF adapters is to use an EF-teleconverter. When using rf 100-500 and 1.4x converter, is there any chance of the 1.4x converter touching the back glass of the 100-500 lens (whether when attaching or zooning)?
Asked by: Michael
Yes there is a chance that this extender can touch the rear element, therefore it can only be used within the 300-500mm range on the RF 100-500mm lens.

RF 100-500mm f/4.5-7.1L IS USM (can only be used within 300-500mm range). What does 300-500 range mean? So while on my New R5 (on order) what happens between the 100-300 portion of the zoom?
Asked by: Patrick
When you're using the RF 100-500mm f/4.5-7.1L IS USM with the teleconverter, it will not allow you to set the lens to anything less than 300mm in focal length due to the design of the teleconverter and rear internals of the lens. Basically, you won't be able to zoom wider than 300mm when using the teleconverter.

Does this Canon Extender RF 1.4x give us a better image than the EF 1.4x? Is this compatible with the 100-400mm 100-400mm f/4.5-5.6L IS II USM Lens or the RF 100-500mm f/4.5-7.1 L IS USM Lens?
Asked by: Brian
The RF extender is made specifically for the RF 100-500mm lens, and the new super-telephoto lenses. When it comes down to image quality, it is suited specifically to get the most out of the RF lenses. It is not compatible with the EF 100-400mm or any EF lens for that matter.
