Canon Extender RF 2x Reviews

Exceeded my expectations

I bought this extender to double the reach of my RF 600 F4L on my R5. The sharpness, contrast, and quality of the images produced by it exceeded my expectations. 2x extenders can be hit-or-miss, depending on the manufacturer. While images are always sharper without one, Canon certainly has a winner here.

Much sharper than I expected

I was really hesitant to order a 2X, but combine with the RF 100-500 it actually produced acceptable results, not stellar, but acceptable.

Great for the Canon RF 100-500mm on the R5.

With improvements over the years, has the 2X gotten better

OK, I'm 73. I have been using Canon products for over 50 years. 1/4 extenders are useful. I never liked the results of 2x extenders. Never. But, now that I have the R5 (Amazing camera!) and have the RF 100-500mm lens and the RF 800mm (and other RF lens) and have used the RF 1/4 extender with surprising success; (I am highly critical of my own wildlife photography). So, I bought the RF 2x extender to see if they have improved the quality of the 2X . . . and they have. I used it on both the RF 100-500mm (on a tripod) and the RF 800mm (tripod) for the 100-500mm I was most pleased with the results for Snail Kites on the other side of the lake). The images were surprising sharp. The RF800mm not so much, but useable. The RF 2X is a useful tool ! It turned my RF 100-500mm into a useful 1000mm lens. To be used only when you just have to have the power or lose the shot . . .

I was a little unsure about getting a 2x Extender. I have had one years ago that I did not like. After getting the RF 1.4x I was surprised how well the images turned out I decided to try the RF 2.x. I am glad I did, the results are great with my RF 100-500. I am very happy with the extra reach. I do wish Canon has designed the 100-500 to be a big longer to allow full zoom range with a TC, but still I love the TC combos.

Can you safely use a 2x teleconverter with extension tubes(all Canon original)? Just curious!
Asked by: Yo
Extension tubes will fit the 2x converter but how well they work would be unknown. The tube)s) would need to be mounted to the camera, then the 2x converter, and then the compatible lens. Automatic functions such as AF and auto exposure might be lost too.

If used with 600m lens it stops to f22, does that effect the camera settings e.g. shutter speed and ISO?
Asked by: Carlie
Yes and no. To maintain a correct exposure, your exposure settings will have to compensate for the loss of light. With the 2.0x teleconverter, you lose 2-stops of light. For the "no" answer: in manual, since you have to change these settings yourself, if you do not change your shutter speed or ISO to compensate, your picture will come out 2-stops darker. So if you decide not to change them, technically the lens and teleconverter do not have any control over your other settings. For the "yes" answer: in P/Tv/Av, your shutter speed and ISO will adjust accordingly to your EV compensation, min. shutter speed settings, and also Auto ISO ceiling (if applicable).

If used with 100-500mm RF, is it possible to damage the lens if it is tried to go below 300mm by mistake? The hit is directly on the lens or does it has a safe stop?
Asked by: Damian
The RF extender prevents the lens from retracting past 300mm. From my tests here at the Superstore, while it is might be possible to damage them if you really tried, it seems unlikely as the force generated by rotating the lens between 500-300 isn't very high.
