Manfrotto MVG220 Overview

Manfrotto's Gimbal 220 Kit features the Gimbal 220 3-axis motorized gimbal stabilizer, one of the two gimbals that make up Manfrotto's entry into the gimbal world. The Gimbal 220 offers a 4.85 lb payload ideal for compact mirrorless cameras, and it's designed with a touchscreen display. With just a press of an icon in many cases, the touchscreen allows you to directly enter different modes, such as inception, time-lapse, or selfie mode. The touchscreen also lets you set up nearly all the parameters of the gimbal instead of having to rely more on the companion app. For all other settings and for remote operation, the companion Manfrotto app can be used on iOS and Android devices.

The Gimbal 220 Kit also includes an underslung handle, quick release plate, mini tripod, and shutter release cables. The underslung handle can be attached to use the gimbal in various low-angle shots and can also be used as an additional support at all other angles. You can keep it attached at all times or remove it for a lighter setup.

The Gimbal 220 has an independent lock on each axis to make pre-balancing your camera quick and simple. You can unlock and balance one axis at a time. This feature also allows the gimbal to be stored away easier. The Gimbal 220 runs for up to 7 hours in normal operation and up to 14 hours in standby mode. The battery is rechargeable via a USB Type-C port on the gimbal using one of the included cables and an optional USB charger.

The quick release system uses two mounting plates. There's a built-in platform and a removable top plate, both with an Arca-Swiss standard design. The top plate can be used to switch your camera between the gimbal and tripods or other supports with Arca-Swiss compatibility, and you won't have to rebalance the gimbal when mounting the camera back on.

Select cameras can also be connected to the gimbal via the included cables for a more seamless workflow between the camera and gimbal. You'll be able to adjust certain camera settings directly from the gimbal. The Gimbal 220 offers lock, pan, follow, and all follow modes and provides 360° pan, 230° tilt, and 360° roll rotation.

I bought this gimbal to dive into video (I'm primarily an elopement photographer). So far, it's been very easy to set up and learn with and I'm overall very happy. I like how smooth it makes my videos vs when I was just hand-holding my camera. It's also a nice manageable size. Downsides: I have yet to be able to use this gimbal for the full 7 hours of battery life if promises. It's kind of frustrating for me with that because as an elopement pro I'm already schlepping everything in my pack, extra battery backup to charge as I hike is unideal. I also can't balance my z6ii with my Sigma 24-70 using the adapter. I'm not sure if I would be able to do so with the larger version of this gimbal or if I had the Nikkor Z 24-70 and therefore didn't need the adapter. So when I'm filming and using the gimbal I am using my Nikkor Z 50.

Will this work with a Nikon D800

The Manfrotto 220 Gimbal will physically work with the Nikon D800 and lens up to a total payload of 4.85lb as long as it your lens + camera combination are well-balanced. However, as far as we are aware, the Nikon D800 has no innate compatibility (software-wise) with the MVG220 for camera control.

Isn't it important to have the option to attach your phone or a small accessory screen viewer?
Asked by: Scott
The answer to this question is entirely subjective and would have to be supported by the nature of the specific application of the device. Of course, having options for "screen viewing" can only enhance the production process, but depending on the camera being mounted and how it's being used, it would not necessarily prove to be a deal breaker.

No, the Manfrotto Gimbal 220 Kit will not work with Apple iPad models. At this moment we are not aware of any motorized gimbal model that would work with Apple's iPad. A possible idea for an Apple iPad is listed below. A stabilizer like the Movo VS7 with the Magnus iPad holder could be a stabilizer solution for an iPad. I have a Panasonic FZ2000. Would Gimbal 220 (or Gimbal 460) work with this bridge super-zoom camera? The camera weights 915 g, but how compatible is it by design?

This was my assumption based on the specs, but how about the form factor of the camera? Can someone imagine its compatibility (e.g. based on pictures of the camera) with these gimbals?

Whats is differnce between manfrotto 220 gimbal and 460 gimbal?
Asked by: Bhatia
The primary difference is that the 460 can handle twice the weight capacity at 10lbs. The 460 can run for 12 hours on a full battery charge vs. the 7 that the 220 can do. There are two USB ports on the 460 and only one on the 220. And the 460 is slightly larger and about one pound heavier.
