Sekonic Speedmaster L-858D-U Light Meter

Aiming to provide for the needs of both photographers and filmmakers, the Speedmaster L-858D-U Light Meter from Sekonic comes packed with a variety of upgraded features and capabilities that make it an almost essential tool for a working professional. It is able to take incident and reflected light readings of both flash and ambient light with an expanded measuring range of -5 to 22.9 EV at ISO 100, or within an illuminance range of 0.1 to 2,000,000 lux. Users will also find it intuitive and easy-to-use thanks to the use of a 2.7" color touchscreen LCD and an all-weather design.

The meter can use either a 270° rotating and collapsible lumisphere or an integrated 1° spot viewfinder to account for varying needs of the user. Also, it offers an extensive range of cinema and video settings as well as the unique ability to measure flash duration and to take readings when using high-speed sync flash. The L-858D-U is equipped with a variety of other functions as well, including memory recall, a Flash Analyzing Function, and extended ranges on nearly every setting. Additionally, through the use of optional modules, users can add radio triggering support for PocketWizard and Elinchrom/Phottix systems.

Lumisphere receptor head rotates 90° right and 180° left and retracts for conversion to a flat diffuser.
Integrated 1° spot viewfinder with full information display provides a precise method of measuring specific parts of a scene.
Ability to measure flash duration within a range of 1/40 to 1/55,500 second using t0.1 to t0.9 settings.
Improved sensitivity of the L-858D-U allows it to record a reading at just 0.1 lux illuminance as well as use expanded range of -5 to 22.9 EV for incident readings and -1 to 22.4 EV for reflected light. Also, it features an extended ISO range of ISO 3 to ISO 13,107,200 with an option available for ISO 850.
Optional radio modules are available for PocketWizard and Elinchrom/Phottix systems for advanced wireless triggering and remote flash control.
High-Speed Sync support allows photographers to accurately take readings while using HSS with their flashes and cameras.
Flash Analyzing Function measure ambient and flash simultaneously to provide a percentage of flash in the final exposure. Users can then adjust the mix as the display shows camera settings and the relationship between the flash and ambient light in your exposure.
Users can determine the dynamic range of their camera using optional targets by taking bracketed shots with their measurement data and they using the Sekonic Data Transfer Software to graph and then save the information to the meter.
Expanded shutter speed ranges now allow for readings between 1/64,000 second to 30 minutes with ambient light and 1/16,000 second to 30 minutes for flash.
A comprehensive set of cinema modes allows for settings of 1-1000 fps as well as shutter angles of 1-358°. Twenty user determined settings are also available that provide more precise options of 0.001-360° shutter angles and 0.001-99,999.999 fps.
2.7" color touchscreen LCD provides a fast and intuitive method for viewing and changing settings.
Micro-USB port can be used for firmware updates, applying custom settings, and to use exposure profiling.
The L-858D-U features an all-weather construction that is dust and splash proof (JIS Class 4).

Sekonic RT-BR Broncolor Transmitter Module

Add a 2.4 GHz Broncolor-compatible radio triggering protocol to your Speedmaster L-858D-U light meter with this RT-BR Broncolor Transmitter Module from Sekonic. Able to be fitted into meter's housing, this module provides multiple functions beyond triggering, including access to all 99 Radio Studio Addresses and 40 Lamp Addresses for remote triggering within a 98.4' range. This radio control also permits adjusting the modeling light power and enables Broncolor users to more easily measure the ambient-to-flash light ratio and flash duration.

Allows me to work quicker and with better exposures

In the past, I used a Gossen Luna Pro F for incident metering. And a Minolta Spotmeter F for reflective metering. To have practical incident and reflective metering in one piece of gear is already a winner for me. I actually do miss the analog needle of the Gossen. But for an all digital meter, I think this holds up well. The sensitivity range has worked in all the lighting conditions I have been in so far, with the exception of astrophotography. But that is a field that requires it's own process for me. The ability to shade/expose the incident bulb is a nice feature. LCD screen is readable in outdoor light. Case isn't a luxury case, though it is fine enough. The memory function does help. Particularly in speeding up conversations while on film sets. As I can take one set of meter readings to get the dynamic range of a set, then just walk over to each crew member that needs to know (DOP, Director, Gaffer....) the lighting range. The only complaint I would give is the control buttons on front and back. It isn't the biggest thing. But I wish the buttons were different sizes or shape to help train my muscle memory of which button does what. As long as you don't move the settings around, you'll get it. But still, the muscle memory would love it if I hit the round button every time I want to take a meter reading. And avoid the square button.

Price vs. Product Imbalance is another way to say that what you pay for what you get is seriously out of whack. I can't help but think if Godox made this light meter it would be twice as good and half the cost. It would have a capacitive OLED screen like an iPhone instead of the resistive dot matrix screen which started to fad from use in 2007. The interface would be easier to use. It would look sleeker. It would have 1/100 sec shutter setting. Shame on Sekonic to alter the photos they use of this product to make it look darker and better than when you actually get it. The actual product does not look like the photos of it Sekonic provides. Yes, it works and it is nice to have a meter that triggers and adjusts your strobe output. If it cost half the price I may have kept it. But I can't help but feel I've been taken for a ride with this product. For this kind of money, I expected more...much more.

Why is the Sekonic Broncolor Transmitter Module a recommended accessory when it comes with the kit?

While not necessary since this SKU comes with the Broncolor transmitter module, we've listed it under the recommended accessories so customer with just the light meter would be able to quickly find the necessary module for Broncolor's radio triggering protocol if they were looking to "upgrade", per se.

Which one these Sekonic transmitters works with the Interfit S1 flash?

If you are asking for a light meter that has a built-in radio transmitter compatible for use with the wireless radio receiver built inside the Interfit S1 light fixture, unfortunately, there is no option designed by Sekonic. The Sekonic Speedmaster L-858D-U Light Meters are built with transmitters for PocketWizard, Godox, Broncolor, Elinchrom, and Phottix wireless radio systems. As they do not manufacture an option for use with Interfit strobes, I would instead recommend purchasing the Sekonic L-858D-U Speedmaster Light Meter Kit with Transmitter Module for PocketWizard, B&H # SEL858DUSMPW, along with a PocketWizard transceiver such as the PocketWizard PlusX Transceiver, B&H # WIPWPX, for your usage needs.

The spot meter measures in foot lamberts rather than foot candles. I have never used foot lamberts before and I am finding conflicting answers to how many foot lamberts 250 foot candles is. I got the meter because I want to work with the zone system following Ansel Adams books. He talks about spot metering in foot candles and knowing that the moon, in Hernandes NM was 250 fc. Can someone point me to an easy conversion tool such as an ios app?
