The BG-N21 Battery Grip from Vello is designed for use with the Nikon Z 5, Z 6, Z 6 II, Z 7, and Z 7 II mirrorless cameras. Vello BG-N21 Overview

The BG-N21 Battery Grip from Vello is designed for use with the Nikon Z 5, Z 6, Z 6 II, Z 7, and Z 7 II mirrorless cameras. It accepts two Nikon EN-EL15a or EN-EL15b rechargeable batteries (not included) to effectively double the camera's battery life and shooting time. The BG-N21 is equipped with an alternate shutter release that connects to the camera via an included 2.5mm shutter release cable, making the battery grip ideal for camera operation in portrait orientation. A convenient lock switch disables the controls to prevent accidentally triggering or changing settings.

The BG-N21 incorporates a USB-C charging port to allow recharging the batteries with the supplied USB-C power supply, without the need to remove them from the grip. Indicator LEDs show individual battery status at a glance.

Comfortable grip but with a lot issues.

I have been using the grip for a while now on my Z6, definitely not a fan of the cable feed for the vertical shutter. I experienced the same thing that some others were experiencing with batteries dying with this grip, found that the “check” button was stuck and draining the batteries due to the battery “gauge” being lit constantly. Ended up removing the check button from the grip, and found the button on the motherboard wasn’t even fully soldered/attached. Also, (sometimes) would not show a full battery as charged or even installed in grip. Would have to release/reseat battery. It stopped charging through the grip, and possibly fried one of my genuine Nikon batteries.

I don’t know what causes it but when I’m using this battery grip I’m only getting about half the time out of two batteries that I get out of one when using them one at a time. I know the grip is causing the drainage because I tested it during minis.

Will this grip charge batteries while Nikon Z7 is ...

Will this grip charge batteries while Nikon Z7 is ON? Unlike Z7 II the first Z7 normally doesn't support this (USB charging works only with camera turned off). So the question is if you can plug USB power to the grip to keep batteries charging/ constant power during the prolonged camera operation.

While the batteries can be charged inside the BG-N21, the camera can only be in the off position.

The description says compatible with the Z6ii, but the staff member says only the Nikon MB-N11 is compatible. Can staff please clarify? Ok for Z6ii or not ok? Thanks

Will the batteries charge while using the camera? Such as setting up the camera as a webcam and having it basically powered from the USB cable.

Yes you can charge the batteries while using the camera with the grip, you just need to ensure that you are using the En-EL15c batteries, and that you are plugging the charging cord into the side of the camera and not into the grip.
