I can’t say how waterproof these bags are, but I once carried a Domke canvas satchel full of camera gear into the rain forests of Costa Rica for days, and the only gear that got wet was the gear I took out of the bag.

It might fit in the big outside pocket, but it would not have any protection. It's a non padded pocket. I hate to point you in the wrong direction, but I've had mine less than a year and I'm thinking about selling it and going back to a LowPro bag. The clips are a pain, my 70-200 won't fit in a convenient way, and I dislike all the Velcro on the pockets. I hope this helps.

I use NIKON D800's DSLRs mostly and I carry my 70-200 2.8 without a problem. The bag is really big and for most daily work I still use my old F-1 bag.
