The Canon Pro 200 is an incredible Photo printer. I always use genuine Canon Ink refills, NO substitutes. Even when I have to wait for back orders to be filled. It is not worth the chance of clogging print heads and gumming rollers for a cheaper substitute. B&H can be trusted for the original ink tanks and ship right away.
I'll start by saying that this was a major purchase for me, and I didn't take my decision lightly. I have used larger pigment-based printers from Canon and Epson, both in grad school in Buffalo and as a member at Lightwork in Syracuse - so, I feel I have the experience to have a well informed opinion. First off, this blows the Epson P700 out of the water - full stop. If you're considering that one, just hold your horses and buy the Pixma P-200S, and thank me later. Someone might say, "but the P700 is pigment ink with separate matte black!" After seeing the results from the P-200S with its single photo black ChromaLife ink (and two grays), I'm going to say without any reservation, "so what?" Printing in B&W mode with a quality matte paper easily equals or exceeds anything I've gotten from any Epson printer of any class. And is on par with the larger Canons as well! After doing several dozen prints so far, I have had absolutely ZERO issues with weird mechanical shenanigans (ie; the tractor marks on that wretched P700) or any ink wasting. The set of inks that come in the box are FULL catridges, not half-filled "starters." I am very impressed with the quality of the color rendition from the ChromaLife inks. My monitor has been calibrated with a Datacolor Spyder and using the stock ICC profiles with the papers gets color results as close to the screen as I have ever gotten. Heck, I even tried a print on a printable DVD-R and it turned out shockingly high quality, as good as on matte photo paper. The ChromaLife dye inks get fantastic results and are very reasonably priced. If you want advice about what extra inks to buy, I'd say definitely get an extra Black, and maybe a Gray if you're doing a fair amount of B&W printing. The other colors have barely depleted after several dozen full color 8.5x11" prints. Canon has developed a machine that completely dominates the 13" market with the Pro-200S. And I shoot Nikon! LOL
