I had been eyeing this matte box for a couple years and glad I finally pulled the plug. It’s super solid yet surprisingly light for its size and build. Having 3 trays and multiple mattes is great as well. It feels like it should cost more, you definitely get your money’s worth!

Panavision Clone? Not Quite, but A Similar, Smaller Cousin

I'm a retired feature camera operator of over 20 years blessed to work on many of the tentpole movies of the last three decades. Another blessing was that 98% of those were with Panavision packages. A staple of every package is their matte box system. I'm putting together a rig to have some visual fun in retirement, and part of the research was to find a good matte box system, hopefully as close to the Panavision as I could find. I hear and see a lot of griping about unwanted lens flares, ghosting, and veiling in on-line review videos about lenses (especially anamorphics) used on rigs. I'm not surprised when I see them providing minimal or NO light protection for the lens. Yes, the fad for anamorphic lenses is for flares, the more the better, and all the time. Kinda silly. My point is that even a Panavision C-series anamorphic will flare the same if you use it that way. We busted our chops to prevent flares when they were not part of the story by using everything we had; matte box, brow/shade, snap on masks, and grips flagging lights any time possible. So...I was very motivated to be able to protect the front element of the lenses I will use, and the right matte box was essential. This Tilta MB-T12 is a magnificent product that fits the bill for me. The Tilta even looks somewhat like a scaled down lightweight version of the Panavision. The shape and aspect ratio is right, 4 x 5.6 filter trays, a sturdy wide-shaped brow/shade, a means to control back light entering around the lens and reflecting off a filter, and the biggest surprise is snap on masks for varying focal length ranges. Very clever designs and good fit, finish, and fitment. None of it is as tough and heavy duty as the Panavision (you won't be using each side of the box for grips when handholding), and it won't survive as much punishment. But it will control light beautifully to prevent unwanted optical artifacts and retain/deliver as much of the lens' native contrast as possible. That's what it's about, right? Okay, it looks sexy, too. So far, using it with 15mm rods. Highly recommended. RF, SOC

"RF 28-70mm F2 lens has an inner diameter of 95mm, rather than the outer diameter being 95mm as might be expected. This is unusual", the Came-TV says. You can get https://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/1816955-REG/tilta_mb_t16_95_adapter_ring_for_tilta.html

Does the MB-T12 has a safety latch or something that prevents the filter trays from falling if you forgot to lock them?
Asked by: Roei
Not really-- you do need to tighten the screws to lock them in, or it is possible that they'll fall out. This happened to me once. That said, they don't fall out *easily*, so you may be lucky.

This matte box has 15mm rod support. With a lens of that size you would need to have the camera on a baseplate with 15mm rods.
